The View

For the week of March 30, CBS’ “The Talk” topped ABC’s competing “The View” to rank as the most watched and top ranked daytime broadcast talk show for the second time in four weeks, according to newly released Nielsen Media Research ratings data.

Nominees for the 42nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards in select categories were announced earlier today on CBS’ “The Talk.” All in ABC’s “General Hospital” is leading the pack with 28 nominations. “The Young and the Restless” is right behind with 25 nominations followed by “The Bold and the Beautiful” with 19 noms and “Days of our Lives” with 16.

For the week of January 19-23, ABC’s “The View” beat CBS’ competing “The Talk” in Total Viewers (2,881,000 vs. 2,788,000), Women 18-49 (445,000 vs. 438,000) and Women 25-54 (626,000 vs. 624,000). The daytime talk show was up across the board week-to-week to post 5 week highs in viewers and Women 25-54.

One month after announcing that 93% of its board approved the National Code of Fair Practice for Network Television Broadcasting (Network Television Code), SAG-AFTRA announced today that its members have overwhelmingly ratified the new contract with 96.5% of the members voting in favor.

The SAG-AFTRA National Board announced today that it has reached a tentative agreement with broadcast networks ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX, among other producers, on terms for a successor agreement to the National Code of Fair Practice for Network Television Broadcasting (Network Television Code). The agreement, approved by a 93% vote by the board, covers dramas in first-run syndication, morning news shows, talk shows, serials (soap operas), variety, reality, contest, sports and promotional announcements.

As if being the most watched daytime drama series for more than 25 years wasn’t enough, CBS Daytime’s “The Young and the Restless” has placed fifth on Bing’s Top TV Show Searches for 2014, just behind TV’s hottest primetime series, AMC’s “The Walking Dead.” “Y&R” beat out the likes of E!’s now defunct “Chelsea Lately” (#6), NBC’s “The Today Show” (#7), HBO’s “Game of Thrones” (#8), ABC’s “The View” (#9) and FOX’s “American Idol” (#10).

With ABC becoming full owner of “The View,” after buying out Barbara Walters‘ stake over the summer, the network announced today that the daytime talker will now fall under the purview of ABC News after more than 17 years under the entertainment division, this despite a drastic makeover this fall with the inclusion of three new hosts joining Whoopi Goldberg on the panel. With the talk show now falling under the umbrella of the news division, “General Hospital” and “The Chew” remain the only entertainment programming airing during the daytime on the network.

On Thursday, October 23, stars from ABC’s “General Hospital,” “The Chew” and “The View” partied throughout the night during the annual ABC Casino Night, which took place in New York City, as they schmoozed alongside sales clients at Guastavino’s. Those in attendance included “GH’s” Laura Wright (Carly Corinthos), Lynn Herring (Lucy Coe), Jason Thompson (Patrick Drake), Ryan Paevey (Nathan West), Vinessa Antoine (Jordan Ashford) and William deVry (Julian Jerome). The actors were joined by “GH” executive producer Frank Valentini and head writer Ron Carlivati.

As previously reported, everyone loves CBS’ “The Young and the Restless” and the year-to-year growth in Total Viewers, Women 25-54 and Women 18-49 during the week of October 6-10, 2014 continues to prove that point. In addition to “Y&R,” CBS is experiencing overall growth with “The Bold and the Beautiful,” “The Price is Right,” “Let’s Make a Deal” and “The Talk.” In the case of “B&B,” the soap is seeing plenty of women enjoying the storyline surrounding Ridge Forrester (Thorsten Kaye) and Caroline Spencer Forrester (Linsey Godfrey) along with the happenings of Hope Logan (Kim Matula) following the recent revelation that she’s with child after a recent romp with one of the Spencer brothers. The soap is up 23% in Women 25-54 and 38% in Women 18-49 compared to the same week last year.

Unfortunately, due to an arm injury I sustained last Thursday, my typing skills have been put to the test and the report was delayed. Alas, I’m feeling a lot less pain than I did for much of the past week so here now is the daytime ratings report for the week of September 29-October 3, 2014. Better late than never, right? This week we highlight how the broadcast shows ranked overall in Total Viewers, Men 18+, Adults 18-49 and Median Age.
