  • DAYS fan since 2000

And as always: Best rating (hitting 3 million viewers) for DAYS on the day when Will and Sonny were front and center. And then, they weren’t on for the rest of the week and hundreds of thousands of viewers stopped watching.

Maybe, one day the writers and producers finally get it and give them the air time and front burner storylines they deserve!!

    • sands of time

I’ve been a fan of DAYS since 1984. I do not hate Will and Sonny. I think it’s great to include any and all walks of life, but DAYS has had ups and downs in the ratings since the show began. Some can easily say that Mondays are traditionally the best ratings for all soaps, including this time. Tbo, some can even say seeing Will and Sonny on the Monday was a deciding factor not to tune in the next day.

      • DAYS fan since 2000

My evaluation was not based merely on one day, but on several observations since the beginning of last year. See my comment above. For me personally, Will and Sonny were the reason I got hooked on DAYS again after virtually having stopped watching for three years.

        • TV&MovieBuff

And I only gave Days another look because of Kristen returning to the show. I never would have if she didn’t. But I also realize that she is not the only reason the ratings have gone up for the show. She is only part of it.

Your original post did not say they were part of it. It made it sound as if they were the only reason the show got 3 million viewers and because they weren’t on the ratings dropped.

Only online viewers have any inkling of when a person is going to be on due to spoilers. And that is only a small portion of a show’s viewers. The rest of them have no idea.

          • DAYS fan since 2000

OK, sorry. Obviously, I didn’t express myself well. Thanks for pointing that out! See my comments above.

    • sands of time

I should also add that Will and Sonny could be helping with the gains in the young demos. That’s great in the long run!!!

    • TV&MovieBuff

I guess they also caused the ratings to go up on all 3 of the other shows too. GH hit over 3 million that day while B&B hit over 4 mill and Y&R hit over 5 mill. Monday was the best day for all of them.

I guess Will & Sonny are as powerful as Michael Muhney was last week when he caused all 4 soaps to drop in ratings.

      • DAYS fan since 2000

I quote a comment from the s o n forums that sums it up very well, posted in January 2013, just when DAYS got a huge boost in the ratings (two-years-high, week January 14-18, 2013) and started to recover from the weak ratings they had been drawing for almost two years:

“Glad hundreds of thousands more viewers tuned in — because of how well-written, quality, and addictive Days of Our Lives has become right now!

And all this with the focus of the story on Will. The show wasn’t
afraid to take a risk on creating great soap drama with numerous family ties affected, vets galore, and a couple that happens to be gay front and center in the fallout. It paid off. Hopefully this is only the beginning of a run of ratings revival for the show.”

And it was a beginning. The next climax was during May sweeps and DAYS got the best ratings when Sonny delivered Ari (Will’s daughter) and when Will was in the hospital afterwards (Emmy-worthy performance by Freddie Smith aka Sonny).

And I bet we’ll see another climax in ratings during the Will and Sonny wedding next month!

So, yes, WilSon is a big part of the ratings boost DAYS has achieved since the beginning of 2013.

        • sands of time

They are a part of the bigger picture. All the characters and stories were and still are hot!

You should realize how unfair it is to overlook the huge contribution Eileen Davidson and the Kristen story made to DAYS. I’m looking forward to her return.

It’s a group effort. There are a lot of things right with DAYS!!!

          • DAYS fan since 2000

I totally agree that it’s alway the bigger picture that ultimately results in good ratings or not.

And I couldn’t agree more that all these wonderful characters and stories you mentioned (Kristen, EJami and now also EJabbi, Ericole, JOHN AND MARLENA etc.) are all very important pieces of this bigger picture.

My only point was that I think Will and Sonny should get some more air time than they got last week.

          • sands of time

Yes, I agree! At the very least, all the characters should have equal airtime. I’ve been begging for more Justin and Adrienne.

This week did make up for last week with the airtime for Will and Sonny.

          • DAYS fan since 2000

Yes, Justin and Adrienne should be on a lot more! Love them both!!

          • DAYS fan since 2000

PS: So many people commenting on DAYS – that definitely means they’re doing a lot of things right :-))

    • Andrew Hass

You might be right that some people are tuning to see Will and Sonny and their story but i want to know how many people knew Will and Sonny were going to be on Monday’s episode or that they weren’t going to be on the rest of the week.I also think the fans will tune in to watch their wedding when it airs because i have a feeling a lot of things are going to happen there and not just involving Will and Sonny. Finally i think it’s great that all 4 soaps went up that week.

  • Andrew Hass

People were worrying because the ratings went down last week but this week they went up and regained some of the ground they lost and even gained more then they lost.

    • let the numbers speak

People who didn’t just read the headline “bad week”, but took a look at the actual numbers and compared them to the numbers in the ratings archive weren’t “worried” at all, because it was the best week at this time of the year since 2010.

      • Andrew Hass

That’s why i don’t take the week to week ratings that seriously because they go up and down all the time. What matters to me is how the soaps are doing from the same time last year.Plus in overall viewers all the soaps went down last week and this week they all went up.

  • let the numbers speak

Congrats to all our top 4 soaps for the best ratings in five years (1st week of March, households and total viewers, see ratings archive)!

  • PatF

There’s a typo for YR in the 18-34. Should be -19,000 compared to last week.

    • nyvoter

That’s a significant difference, LOL; thanks for bringing it out to our attention. Hopefully it will be corrected in the official ratings

  • Bexx

Y&R ratings went up? I was certain CBS would announce it’s cancellation this week. Maybe next week…

    • luciano

really? and wasn’t GH supposed to be canceled last year already, according to your infinite wisdom?

  • sands of time

    Great gains for DAYS!!!

  • sands of time

Demos as a whole compared to last year:

    GH +250,000
    DAYS +141,000
    Y&R -31,000
    B&B -152,000

    Congrats to GH and DAYS!!!

    • sands of time

A difference of 402,000 between GH and B&B.

  • Harlee

This is a great week to start out March! Congratulations to all the soaps for keeping the gains (mostly) during the tough winter months. I think the polar vortex actually helped the soaps and didn’t hurt when approaching a sweeps month and the soaps had peaking stories unleashing on the our TV screens! 😉

  • Hugo

DAYS beats B&B in the W18-49 demo and beats both Y&R and B&B in the W18-34 demo, that’s awesome!

  • sands of time

Demos as a whole compared to last week:

    GH +131,000
    Y&R +39,000
    DAYS +38,000
    B&B +3,000

    Congrats to all the soaps!!!

    • sands of time

A difference of 128,000 between GH and B&B.

  • sands of time

The networks should have had press releases!!!

  • nyvoter

All ratings must be viewed thru various prisims, composite lengths of time and always thru a most imperfect Neilsen rating system whose outdated measures often skew results inaccurately. For example, this week every single soap exhibited its best results on Monday, thereafter falling to much lower numbers throughout the week. Unless we are willing to accept that tens of thousands of viewers move in perfect harmony from day to day as it affects their viewing habits, I hold Neilsen’s imperfections suspect. In all cases, a four to five-week range often irons out the wrinkles of weekly reports: For example, highly discussed Y&R increased total viewers by 188,000 this week (with a 3.6 rating), but over a five-week range, Y&R experienced four-week consecutive negative ratings, for a total five-week decrease in total viewers of 689,000. In addition, this week’s coveted demo for Y&R reported a decrease of 40,000 viewers compared to the same time last year, which has been consistently lower in comparison for the last five weeks. Within the next few months, results may show increases, further decreases or status quo .. best allways to look through a long-range lens.

    • SoapFansTogether

Yeah, I’ve been looking at the long-term development for a long time.

Last year, already in early summer, I predicted on the basis of the significant upward trend that had started in the beginning of 2013, that we would see soap ratings continue to go up!

Now, the top 4 soaps are having their best season averages since the 2007-08 season!!

      • Fox

The upward trend at the network venues over the course of the last year parallels the loss of the Soapnet venue. Those displaced viewers had to go somewhere and not everyone will choose or has access to TVGN.

        • damian26

Soapnet was on air till the last day of 2013. Also, people usually watched Soapnet because they didn’t have time to watch during the day. It’s far from reality to suggest that the huge gains in ratings all the soaps have seen since the 2012-13 season has anything (or even for a bigger part) to do with Soapnet going off the air. The main reason is better writing, better stories, making more use of the shows’ histories (bringing back actors etc) and people getting tired of the “alternatives” that replaced the soaps that were canceled since 2009.

          • TV&MovieBuff

I agree with part of what you are saying, but have to totally disagree about better writing and better stories. That is my biggest gripe about the higher ratings is that bad writers and bad writing are getting rewarded when they shouldn’t be. I want my soaps to survive but we will only continue to get the writing from these crappy writers because the ratings are going up and rewarding them.

The only soap that I will conclude has better writing than it had a little over a year ago is Days. B&B is still about the same but has been needing work for quite some time. Y&R and GH are both the worst in the department of writing esp. their dialogue which has taken a big hit. The dialogue and script breakdowns on both shows is often amateurish and resembles some of the worst fan fiction written on the Internet.

I think the biggest reason that the soap ratings are up is people realizing their shows were in danger, and the fact that there are fewer of them. Plus not everyone is like folks on the Internet. I know many people who enjoy the replacement shows and not only watch them but watch the whole lineups on either CBS or ABC.

  • moshane58

Congrats to the soaps. Just wish these networks would find a better way to get ratings and stop paying Nielsen millions for a out dated system. not much has changed from the 70’s in Nielsen way to count viewers. They have caused a lot of shows to get cancelled…

  • sands of time

DAYS John Black is Back! The weddings will pack a one-two punch!! Eileen Davidson will thrill us as a returning Kristen!!! Eve returns to DAYS after 23 years, this time played by Kassie DePaiva!!!! EJabby rocks and Ericole is mesmerizing!!!!!

    We’ll see even better DAYS!!!

  • SoapFansTogether

As was mentioned before, these are the best ratings of the top 4 soaps for this week since 2009! (households)

    Congrats to all soaps!!
