‘Y&R’s’ Eileen Davidson: When Ashley Returns To Genoa City, She Is ‘Traumatized!’

“The Young and the Restless’” Billy Abbot has seen quite a transformation in recent months. After portrayer Billy Miller decided to walk away from the show in January of this year, former portrayer David Tom was cast in the role. But just a few short months later, it was announced that Tom — who previously played the character from 1999 to 2002 — had been ordered to pack his bags so that daytime newcomer Burgess Jenkins could step into the role. And while it was Miller’s decision to leave the character he’d played since 2008, the same cannot be said for Tom, who was reportedly very surprised to learn he’d been replaced with Jenkins after just four months of being back in the role! So what happened to lead to such a quick casting turnaround? We asked CBS Vice President of Daytime, Angelica McDaniel, who told Soap Opera Network that the recast was not an easy turn of events for anyone involved.

On Tuesday, June 24, Genoa City said hello again to a familiar name with a new face. On that day, daytime newcomer Burgess Jenkins took over the role of Billy Abbott on CBS’ “The Young and the Restless” from David Tom, who himself succeeded three-time Daytime Emmy Award winning actor Billy Miller in the popular role, but how did Jenkins land himself on daytime’s most watched drama series? “My management called me and they were talking to me about this role, and when they sent me the breakdown on the character, I just fell in love. I absolutely fell in love with Billy,” said Jenkins when Soap Opera Network spoke with the actor in the gifting suite at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA as part of Daytime Emmy weekend. “There’s not a whole lot of characters you see that are so multi-layered and interesting that way. I had a chance to meet with the producers to discuss the character and the show, and it just seemed like a good fit,” added Jenkins, who noted that the conversation he had with producers on the character helped give him something to dig into before the cameras began to roll.

After nearly a year in a coma, CBS’ “The Young and the Restless” will once again say hello to Phyllis Summers when daytime veteran Gina Tognoni takes over the role beginning Monday, August 11, Soap Opera Network has learned exclusively. Once again proving that its at the top of the heap when it comes to daytime, CBS swept the 41st Annual Daytime Emmy awards with 13 drama related wins, leading all networks. “The Young and the Restless” took home a combined total of nine wins during the Creative Arts Emmy Awards and the Emmy Awards, while “The Bold and the Beautiful” managed to snag four. NBC’s “Days of our Lives” took home three Emmy awards, while ABC’s “General Hospital” garnered two. Meanwhile, Toln.com’s “All My Children” won three awards, while “One Life to Live” took home three, as well.

Rumors of Billy Miller (ex-Billy Abbott, “The Young and the Restless”) joining the cast of ABC’s “General Hospital” have been out there almost as long as rumors of Michelle Stafford (ex-Phyllis Summers, “Y&R”) joining the daytime drama series had been, but sometimes rumors turn out to have major truth to them, especially with Stafford recently joining the cast in the contract role of Nina Clay. Earlier this evening, TV Guide’s Michael Logan tweeted, “Billy Miller. General Hospital. Done deal? This is what I’m hearing.”

Michael Bruno, who manages several daytime soap stars past and present, including Amelia Heinle, who portrays Victoria Newman on “The Young and the Restless,” appeared on the Thursday, May 29 edition of the Lilly Melgar (“General Hospital,” “The Bay”) and Martha Madison (“Days of our Lives,” “The Bay”) hosted radio show “Soap Box with Lilly and Martha” to discuss several soap related topics. One of which was the recent news of David Tom being let go from “Y&R” as Billy Abbott and being replaced by daytime newcomer Burgess Jenkins.
