    Ouch…

    • Salem Spectator

      And the WGA strike looms.

      • Eileen

I had forgotten about that. Well, considering how bad the writing is for soaps overall maybe some “scabs” writing the shows will be an improvement.

      • robert

it may end up being a good thing for the soaps considering how bad the writing is now

  • Pete Ra

Ugh, all soaps took a beating! GH trolling 2.3 million while Days dipped below 2 million Wednesday.

  • George

The Chad Abby vows was worst day for Days. Shows people are tired of the Chad Abby Gabi show. I know a lot of people personally that can’t stand them and don’t care. If they don’t get these characters off every day soon there will be more people not watching.

    Dena’s DAYS: The Brutal Stats!
Days total dropped into the 1. something millions on Wednesday, with a total of 1.945 million.
This is the lowest daily total since Wednesday Jul 20, 2016.
Days had eight days below 2.0 million in the height of last summer – and this is lower than half of them.

How bad does Days have to be before they are cancelled.I don’t blame Ari for leaving, that Nicole on the run s/l is pathetic. Stop watching BB/GH.Y&R went down this week, hope they can bounce back next week.Phyllis and Billy need to stay together for awhile.I hope there isn’t a strike.

    • walkerawa

Everyone says they left after a departure from a soap. Then we find out they were fired or they quickly come back when asked. The truth is she could of been let go or they did not offer her the money she asked for. She has not done much other than soaps. Perhaps she is counting on the Access footage to open doors for her.

Fun Fact: In Italy last Friday’s episode of B&B had 3.277.000 total viewers, while in the USA 3.268.000. Timeslot Italy 1:40 pm vs US 1:30 pm. Population Italy 60.074.000 vs USA 324.849.000

    • JayTN

But, is it the same episode? When I was in Italy years ago, I came down with a 24 hour bug (hungover) and had to stay in the hotel for a day and Italian TV seemed to be reruns of popular American shows or retro-MTV style music videos. I remember watching an episode of “Guiding Light” that was at least a year old (this was back when GL was still airing in the US).

  • TV&MovieBuff

Sad state to see the condition of the soaps but tradition has shown that the soaps go down for live viewing when the weather gets warmer in the spring. So part of it was to be expected. But due to the recent declines in the ratings over the winter there was no padding for the drops so it really looks bad this year.

3 of the last 4 are down almost 500,000 viewers from last year. Not to say they are gone. They may still be watching — maybe DVR or some other means. We don’t know. But the fact remains they still hurt the budget. The writing is not there that makes them want to watch sooner so it just doesn’t count where it is needed.

Days finally dropped on a regular day to below 2 million. I have felt it was probably coming. If things keep falling with Quigley’s writing, I am not even sure a writing change has much hope for recovery by the time it happens.

Sad to see that GH only had 1 day over 2.5 million. Many had big hopes for Passanante/Altman when they came on. A change needed to be made from Ron C., but sadly they kept Frank V. and brought in JP who has a proven track record of being a yes man to producers, and basically it has just been more of the same type stuff that has plagued the show through the writing tenures of Guza and Ron C. And now a show that once achieved at least 1 3 million day a week is fighting now to stay above 2.5 million.

B&B really needs to make some changes fast. I read online a lot of folks who seemed to like the Spectra fashion show, but evidently offline it was hated. The new Spectra’s just don’t seem to be going over with the fans. The show has tied lows or hit new lows ever since they came on. It has been hit or miss for me. But I am definitely not enjoying the show as much as I once did.

Y&R — just frustrating. As I have said I love some of the stuff Sally has done. But she needs help. If Alden is giving her any and she isn’t listening then someone needs to make her. If as some are saying she is doing more of Mal Young’s bidding then she needs to quit. Someone needs to look at what isn’t working and stop it. Move on, tighten up the scenes, add tension, and put some excitement into things. One thing that I really do miss is the show is really lacking a villain right now to stir the pot. I don’t want a psychopath or big super villain — just someone to stir the pot.

    • robert

Sally needs a co-head writer. she’s really lacking in drama. i’ve heard that backstage politics is not allowing Sally to tell the kind of stories she wants to tell

      • TV&MovieBuff

I have read some of the same things on several boards. I can’t remember which one but one of the couples she said wouldn’t be happening but now is….so something changed. She either changed her mind or someone changed it for her. But I totally agree she needs a co-headwriter.

        • Ang

Billy and Phyllis were supposed to be over but now they’re back on. That’s what you can do though when you only tape a month in advance. Maybe the fan response to the couple changed their minds.

          • robert

the low ratings could have forced Sally to change direction

        • robert

she said she hated Philly and that they were over, now they are back, that tells me something had to happen behind the scenes, especially with Mal saying Philly was always going to come back, that doesn’t add up to what Sally said

        • Salem Spectator

          Dena Higley is available.

  • soapfan56

This was Easter and Passover week. A lot of people had off but we did have very nice weather. I guess the only time you can kind of count on an increase is during a major snow storm or extremely cold weather in which people are stuck indoors. Or when the story lines are worth watching which is over all most important.

  • Eileen

Soaps are at an all-time low because they are outdated, corny and have not brought most of their female characters into this century. Sure a lot of them are portrayed as smart career-women but the moment a man enters the picture they turn into a 19th Century doormat. I find it offensive and unrealistic. General Hospital centers around an unappealing, screaming mobster who somehow elicits adoration from any woman he gets involved with (and he and Carly will be reuniting for the umpteenth time). Nikki Newman’s recent declaration of being done with Victor for good should last until July sweeps when all will be forgiven once again. The bad guys are heroes, the police are dumbbells.

    • truth

First of all,if they want for their daytime soaps to be from this century, characters should be layered before being ‘bad guys’ or ‘good guys’..

      • TV&MovieBuff

Well the problem is you don’t really have bad or good characters anymore. Even the characters who are supposed to be “good” anymore can do some of the most evil things like commit murder. And it is excused by the writers and the fans because it was for a good reason. And many complain when the bad guys never pay for their crimes but if the villain is popular they are happy when it works out. I remember RJ on OLTL never paid for any of his crimes, but fans never minded because they liked the character. I think we need to get back to some mixture of all 3 good, bad and gray characters with even the good characters having some layers as well as the bad. The old writers used to be able to do that. They could make you feel bad for the villains even at times when they were up to their most wicked deeds because they made them vulnerable. And good characters often did some bad things but it was leveled out that a good character had to pay dearly for their bad deed. We need more of that today.

        • truth

I agree with your analysis here. No matter the character we need to understand them, being ‘good or bad guy’. And of course bad actions should have consequences no matter the character..When a bad guy is popular, you find ways to keep him but at the same time you make him pay in one way or another and when the good guy make bad things you don’t whitewash it, you make him suffer the consequences too. Great writing can manage to do that and not fall in the one note trope.

    • Kristin

Preach! I grew up with my great aunts watching soaps with female characters who were awesome in their own right, who had jobs and friends and lives outside of being doormats for men. Women on soaps now are actually written WORSE than they were in the 80s. There’s a reason all of the women demos are down. And it’s because soaps, that were supposed to be a genre for women, are actively anti-feminist and quite frankly insulting. There are too many actually good shows with strong (and diverse) female characters for women my age (I’m in the “coveted” demographic) to bother with outdated media that address none of my concerns or aspirations.

  • FoxyRoxyy

Y&R continues to be boring. Who are all of these new characters? Sally Sussman has created about 10 new characters and none of them are noteworthy. The show continues to lag behind last year by hundreds of thousands of viewers. There is so much wrong with Y&R and all soaps. It’s probably a good thing that a writers strike will happen. It will get Sally and her boring writing off our screens. Thank god! Surely Kay Alden (its assumed she will write Y&R during the strike) can’t be as boring as Sally.

    • jonboy

I like Reed and the youthful storyline. Reminds me of back in the day Billy/Mac/Raul/JT/Britney. The rest of the new characters…..BLAH!!!! Get Scott to a hair stylist! How could anyone accept bony Ashley with Ravi? Cane’s fling is totally unmemorable and Jordan is a lousy actor.

      • FoxyRoxyy

Ravi is useless. Poor Eileen Davidson. She deserves so much better. And Scott and that hair. Is no one minding the store? They now just let actors look terrible and go in front of the screen? Y&R is so directionless under these supposed Bill Bell protegees. It’s boring and cringeworthy.

        • truth

I thought many loved Eileen Davidson playing Mrs Robinson..it is not her first ride here..ps: i don’t watch Y&R but i am surprised some of her fans don’t like this pairing when they praised her may/december pairings on Days for example..

          • FoxyRoxyy

Eileen Davidson is great! But now they are pairing her with this dull actor who has no chemistry with her. The Ravi character is one of the most useless characters ever on Y&R. Terrbile from the get go. Poor Eileen.

          • truth

I don’t know i don’t watch Y&R these days..but a man kind of cute/good looking, a bit of a nerd and a indian type..should be refreshing as a daytime soap male character..I know i really enjoy Rahul Kohli on iZombie, Riz Ahmed on Starwars ect, charming/cute and talented guys.and they are on prime time/movies..It is a first that a brown/indian actor is cast in a major role on an american daytime soap..no ?! After that, if the character is boring and the actor has no charisma, no matter his looks it would not work, that’s for sure.

          • Salem Spectator

Her May/December pairings worked on DOOL because of her character and the characters’ histories. Of what I could see, Kristen and Ashley are completely different.

        • cab

Why she choose to go back and stay at Y&R is a surprise to me. Days kept her busy and gave her exciting storylines, she even won a Daytime Emmy for her work on Days not Y&R.

      • TV&MovieBuff

My biggest surprise is the way they have basically wasted Davidson since she returned to Y&R full time. I mean we have a powerful actress here and they can’t come up with one good meaty storyline for her.

        • robert

that is so true. she’s been underutilized for three years now.

        • jonboy

I know this is going to be an unpopular statement with fans but…. I feel it’s about time, for the growth of the show, they start weeding out some of the long-time relics. I mean, seriously, what is left for Victor, Nikki, Jack, Neil, Ashley, Tracy, Michael, Paul, Christine (YUCK!), Lauren, etc. to do that they haven’t done before? Many years ago Y&R shifted from the Brooks/Foster focus and look at the success the show had. For my money it’s time to shake up the canvas again.

          • TV&MovieBuff

I totally agree with you in many ways and many years ago I never thought I would. I will footnote by saying that I think it is time for the show to revisit the Brooks sisters. Or even the Prentiss brothers too. There are all those Prentiss and Foster kids. And just briefly two of the Brooks sisters had some history with the Williams and Newman families so that could be thrown in and revisited for history. It could easily give Jack an actual good age appropriate love interest with the right actress in the role of Peggy Brooks who could have easily gotten pregnant and have kept the child from Jack all these years. And would love to see Lauralee finally get her revenge on Victor. But that aside some of these characters do need a rest or at least some vital interesting characters injected in them.

    • robert

the show is very boring. it got a little exciting with the Chloe reveal, now it’s a snoozefest again. the utilization of the cast is poor. the same few are on everyday and the vets are being backburned for newbies no one cares about

      • FoxyRoxyy

Couldn’t agree more. Newbies cost less, but they are not interesting new characters. Y&R is being so mishandled. I was no fan of Phelps & Pratt at the time, but in hindsight, they did put on a much better show. I signed online petitions to get rid of Pratt. If I only knew then how much worse it would get.

  • Paul

You got to laugh at Days ratings i know all the soaps are doing bad as well but Days nothing but 1.5’s even 1.4’s so hope Alison Sweeney telling us she coming back will a impact on next weeks ratings or Days may under under that dreaded 2 million viewers.

    • lulu

If the story is bad and destroy Sami..don’t count on it..

  • robert

these are dismal numbers for all the soaps. none of the soaps are very good

    • Suzy

YR, BB and GH have some room to fall though. Days has hit the basement and cracking the foundation. Days should be very worried because I’m not counting on a miracle from Ron.

      • Nick

Agreed, it’s scary to think how historically low Days’ numbers could be once Ron C’s work finally starts to air. By that time, any writing regime change will probably be too little, too late to salvage the show. Days has crapped the bed and been an epic dumpster fire ever since the 50th anniversary. From a pure business standpoint, if I was an NBC or Sony executive, I’d be close to having egg on my face with this days-aster when facing my shareholders.

        • Suzy

If they do hit historical lows before Ron C’s work starts to air it shouldn’t be a shock to anyone. Ken sat in a closet while Dena, Josh and Ryan p’od countless fans and p’d away all those fans. Then he brags about all the destruction and hated couples in interviews. He has no idea. I saw so many fans saying get rid of Daniel, hooray that Will is dead, good riddance Aiden, we want our vets, boo hoo hoo. Now the ratings are garbage because 8 characters have hogged and abused air time and no one cares about their stupid stories. We’ve had Hope, Steve, Kayla, Kate, Andre, Chad, Gabi and Abby ad nauseam and they can’t hold up the show. They need to bring on these power hitting returns like Sami because the other characters can’t keep the ratings up on their own. Ron has no hope if all he’s going to do is stories for the same characters. I saw something that says Lani, Rafe and Dario are still around the set and they’re bringing back a washed up singer from a 90’s band. Nope. When Days gets canceled maybe all the fans that ONLY wanted vets or ONLY wanted their favorites will think on it.

          • vivien

It’s not the characters, all those actors you mentioned are great and could knock it out of the park if they had good storylines. I’m hopeful that Ron will breathe fresh air into this soap, with a mix of vets AND younger characters.

          • Suzy

Some of the characters but not all of them. Kate and Andre should fly out and stay out. They cost the show money for no reason. The vet characters are supposed to have lots of fans that love them no matter what aren’t they? So what happened in the ratings? Sure the writing is very bad but it can be an excuse not to admit that people are sick of the same characters all the time. Steve and Kayla’s wedding didn’t have high ratings. Neither did Marlena having nice thoughts about John. Some fans of the show think they know who everyone wants to see and most time they are not right. Rafe had his episode and the ratings were so low. Ken and whoever thinks so many care about Rafe and give him so much air time but the actor is worse than terrible. In fact the character having the best ratings for his episode was Aiden but fans said never mind we don’t need him. The show gets all that happens in ratings. I’m sick of looking at same faces on Days for a year. Hope with Rafe, Kayla with Steve and their dumb son and then Hernandez Gabi with Chad and Abby. I see people ask for Justin, Lucas and Eric and we have all the same boring characters every day. Who are younger characters that people want to see? Not Chad and Abby. They have too many episodes so far and ratings are bad.

          • vivien

I’m no big fan of Kate and Andre, but I don’t think it’s the actors’ fault. Their characters are useless! I’m a big fan of the vets, been watching 30 years. But I’ve been taking a break because I’m just not interested in any of the storylines. No matter who is involved in them! Couldn’t they think of anything else for Patch&Kayla besides giving him a kid with Ava? I can’t stand Hope with Rafe either, and Gabi needs her own man. DAYS used to have the best romances, it’s so sad to see what it is now.

          • robert

they should of brought back Tony instead of Andre

          • Layla

The kid who plays Tripp is pretty good so far though the story seems to be not that great. At least SN & MBE still can hold a scene and look healthy and glad to be there.

          • vivien

Tripp is cute, and it would behoove DAYS to put him in a “Patch&Kayla”-type love story. Because the “love” story Joey got was SO lame. I will always love SN and MBE.

          • Suzy

If NBC says no more next year and cancels Days, it will be a sad thing that Days ends with lots of these characters. Days has worst group of characters now that I remember in years and some bad actors too. How the show is going to end with Hernandez everywhere and bad actors in teenager group AND no good couples except two old vet couples. Can you imagine that? Fans will have something real to cry for.

          • vivien

In my experience, when a soap gets cancelled, THAT is when it starts getting good again! They bring back all the characters we want to see, they put all the couples we love back together again, we get weddings and great, emotional moments! And the ratings usually rise. Look at One Life to Live, its ratings were way higher than GH’s when it finally went off the air. Because things were happening! Why do they have to wait to be cancelled to start giving the fans what they want? Why oh why oh WHY?!

          • No one character or one family is going to save the show. Will had a small but passionate fanbase that wasn’t going to move the needle on its own but they threw that out like garbage. EJ and Sami were controversial and rightly so but they had a passionate fanbase that would have remained loyal if they had been able to ride off into the sunset, but the show spit in their faces. After decades, Hope had a new love interest that developed a small but very loyal and vocal fanbase with Aiden and Haiden and they trashed and betrayed that fanbase twice. Even Daniel, who was internet hated for the ridiculous writing he got, had a fanbase that they threw away. Ericole had vocal supporters, also thrown away. None of those characters/stories could have saved the show on their own but with good stories all of them together could have.

As has been said many times, Higley doesn’t do stories she does stunts. Kidnappings & ridiculous mobster stuff plus she writes all the women as weak and needy and dependent on men.

I do have to agree that the future of soaps is probably streaming with a small audience of broadcast but the old dinosaur executives – who are no doubt responsible for the shows’ misogynist attitudes toward the audience don’t know how to take the shows to a streaming audience. It’s a shame because in a binge world – people want new content all the time. It’s just those people don’t want to be treated with contempt by the shows they watch.

          • lulu

Good comment but one little detail : tptb spit on Ej/Sami fanbase even before they got rid of Ej in such a cheap way..they actually cheapen the character during all his last year..and after so many years of destructive writing it was too much..they redeemed themselves somewhat in 2013 and decided suddenly to destroy everything or almost everything in 2014 : it was a VERY bad move if they wanted to keep this fanbase once the actors were gone..very bad move..

          • Layla

You could see the vindictiveness of Ken Corday in how they treated EJ/James.

          • They threw the same kind of destruction at Wilson and then killed off Will, thinking they would have a different reaction. They are insane.

          • lulu

yep, they are above all DUMB, it is not even funny and the worse : they think it is ‘good television’…puke.

          • sorzsorz

Yes they did and in do so helping to damaging the show.

          • TruthSquad

i thought Thursday and Friday were great. Julie and Gaby going at it. Classic daytime. The earlier part of the week wasnt so great.

          • Brett Jonathan Bradley-Howarth

Agreed. I still enjoy Days, I don’t enjoy GH anymore.

          • Layla

I agree. It’s a good rule of thumb that if there’s a group of nasty, unpleasable trolls on the internet, you should not do anything to try and please them. It’s ridiculous that certain nasty fans will never accept recasts or expect that 70 year old characters be given exactly the same stories they had in the 30s except with no hint that they might ever break up. Some fans are just unreasonable and mean and nothing will make them happy except a time machine to take them back to the 80s but also remove the crap that was on the show then that they don’t remember. The problem with Days now is that Dena & Ryan are terrible writers who are ripping off more popular stories badly. Rope is a bad copy of Bope. Paulson is a terrible and offensive copy of Wilson. Jeneric is just a dull copy of Jack & Jennifer. The show was better off when it was trying to move in a different direction and expand its audience.

      • robert

Days is in the most trouble. their on the verge of falling under 2 million. this is the third time Dena Higley has tanked the show. it’s mind-boggling why Ken keeps bringing her back

  • sherwood

Wow, disastrous week for all soaps. DAYS is close to life support. Looks like it may sink below 2 Million viewers in the very near future. The time slot change in the NYC market didn’t help at all. GH, B&B, and Y&R are bleeding out. These shows have got no pulse. The writing is flat and uninteresting. The White House press conferences have more drama than all of these shows put together.

    • robert

with the weather getting warmer and more people going outside the numbers could get worse. usually the spring and summer is the least watched time of year for tv

    • FoxyRoxyy

The irony with Y&R is that the 2 decent weeks that Sally had was riding Pratt’s coat tails with the Chloe reveal, but all of Sally’s own storylines have been a failure. She can’t write anything interesting. Sally’s writing is so boring.

  • JayTN

It is very clear that the recent “renaissance” that daytime was experiencing is over. However, the whole of daytime is also down. “The View” is one of only two series to see year-over-year improvement, and it is only up a scant 1% in viewers. I wonder if Megyn Kelly’s expected-to-be-much-ballyhooed premiere on NBC later this year will ignite some interest in the entire daypart?

“Days” dropped below 2 million for one day last week and finished with its worst weekly viewership since the week of July 4th, 2016. This is the first time an episode of “Days” has dropped below 2 million since Aug. 25 & 26, 2016. I shudder to think of what the ratings will look like once Ron Carlivati’s material begins to air. Corday & Co. should be plotting out a fitting end to “Days” in case NBC & Sony finally decide to wash their hands of the soap next year.

On a personal note, I don’t regularly watch “Days” anymore, but I did catch two episodes this week. One of the things that really stood out to me is how dark the show is. Not the mood or the stories, but literally dark. “Days” is a DAYTIME soap for goodness sakes. Everything about the show seemed dark…action taking place at night and even the indoor scenes seemed dimly lit. Is Corday trying to save money on the electric bill?

    • Mandy

Yes, the lighting on DAYS has been minimal for months. I hadn’t watched in a while and I turned it on this week. The darkness was the first thing I noticed. It’s distractingly bad and looks cheap.

    • robert

Days doesn’t use lights anymore. practically every episode is in the dark. Days is so full of gloom

    • TruthSquad

I watched DOOL today and I thought it was pretty good but was struck by the darkeness.

    • Kevin Little

Why Alison Sweeney wants to come back to DEAD SOAP WALKING is a mystery. Instead of using her away time filming those formulaic and predictable romantic comedies for the Hallmark Channel, she should have been trying to get a job on B&B or Y&R.

At least those two shows will out live DAYS by at least two or three years.

      • Ang

She’s only back for a few months for a particular storyline, presumably Will coming back from the dead.

Ali isn’t just acting in those movies, she produces them and I think she’s involved in writing as well. I think that kind of experience and exposure will be much more lucrative in the long term as opposed to being one of dozens on the remaining Soaps.

        • lulu

Exactly and these tv movies..it a serie by the way..and only famous/well known prime time actress (Ali is the only soap gal but she is known for the biggest loser on prime time) like Brooke Shield, Kelli Martin, Lori Loughlin, Candace Cameron Bure have the same type of show..it is not every one..it is not the standard hallmark movie..it is like a tv serie. Ali doesn’t need Days, when she is coming back for limited stints she is doing them a favor , not the other way around..

      • TV&MovieBuff

Actors like to work and draw a paycheck. Why does Kimberly McCullough keep coming back to GH when all she wants to do is direct? Why did Eden Riegel keep coming back to AMC when she had so many projects going on outside of daytime? They all like the work and like the paycheck. They need money like any of us do. And they need to work.

        • joseysoapy

Well said! Some fans take things so personally when actors return because they no longer watch or are unhappy with a current state of a show. I am sure its so hard to find steady work for actors. As you said its a paycheck or in some cases an extra paycheck. And the amount of money they get for a return is no where near what most of us will ever get for a job.

          • TV&MovieBuff

I’m not sure if it still works that way, but I think I read too that they have a credit in a certain amount of time to keep their benefits in the union. I know I have read several times over the years where an actor just took a part for that reason. So in some cases that could be the case, but I am sure esp. if the actor/actress has a family the biggest reason is always money.

          • lulu

Alison doesn’t need Days what’s so ever..on the other hand Days needs all the help they can..Alison with her books, her tv movie serie, her guest shows on the food channel ect..doesn’t need Days paycheck..for pete’s sake. She is just nice (and too nice in my book..) and loyal to Days of our lives, when she left she said to them she would come back for some guest arc and she did/does.

          • TV&MovieBuff

Oh please get over it. No one said one thing bad about your pet Allison Sweeney, EJami, EJ, or Sami. Just one question for you though, how in the world do you know what Alison Sweeney needs? None of us know what any of them need. Despite how much we THINK WE KNOW THEM we don’t. We don’t live with them. We buy into their image and know what they allow us to know. None of us know why she came back. We can only speculate and that’s all you can do too. Unless your really Sweeney herself.

          • lulu

I know what she somehow already has money wise..not hard to know what these famous are worth money wise..it is all about the internet..duh. eyeroll.

      • johnfze

It’s all about the Benjamins baby! Think about it…If you have the time, the money is right and you’re invited to come back to a show that might not be around next year..then why not do it! This also helps her other shows and business deals by being back on a major network (publicity/exposure/fan-base/future).

      • Brett Jonathan Bradley-Howarth

Please don’t be so negative about DAYS people, Ron C is an amazing writer, I’m looking forward to his work airing.

      • lulu

ugh..because she is loyal to this soap (she started on it as a teenager and stayed for a long time whereas she could have gone like majority of her costars did..) and wants to be kind towards a soap who is seriously struggling..by the way since she left Dool tptb kept begging her to come back..and being her, nice and loyal she accepted for some limited time..simple as that. ps: her ‘formulaic and predictable romantic comedies’ for the Hallmark Channel work, are popular and have high rating for a cable channel like Hallmark..unlike Dool which is everyday on a major network..

    • cab

You need to adjust the brightness control of your TV, or get your eyes checked.

      • JayTN

Ken Corday needs to turn the lights on.

  • James1192

I still think, as I have said before, the TV audiences are splintering because of on line and multi channel viewing; these Soaps are still holding their own for the big TV Networks in the USA. I know I have read more than once that DOOL has performed at lot worse than CBS Guiding Light – which of course, was cancelled. But the landscape of 2017 is a lot different to 2009. I think. the genre has it’s place – a show that can deliver 2,000,000 in daytime is something not to be derided these days.
I like GH, and I am so pleased ABC continue with it
Prime Time Soap Emmerdale at 7.00pm in UK is ‘popular’ with sometimes just over 5.000,000 viewers – WE ARE IN A TOTALLY DIFFERENT WORLD WHEN IT COMES TO NETWORK RATINGS AND WHAT IS CONSIDERED A SUCCESS THESE DAYS

I think the proof of this is that NBC have DOOL in 2017. Why can’t anyone on this site just accept the reality of Network TV shrinkage and be glad the shows are still here and being watched?

    • FoxyRoxyy

These small audiences aren’t going to pay the bills. Why would a network pay out 50 million dollars a year to produce a soap to reach 500,000 women 18-49 viewers? These soaps are dying before our eyes. It’s a matter of time.

      • Maria

I’m sure it is a matter of time but I’ve been hearing that since 2012.

    • TruthSquad

I agree with you 100%. Daytime viewers of 3- 4-5M total viewers are potential prime time viewers. The demos pay the bills but daytime in many ways is in better shape than prime time and those daytime viewers are a good primetime lead in.

    • Jay Last

So you figured out all by yourself that people watch things online now? Wow what a genius; where do you get such insight?

If you look at daytime ratings, or any ratings for that matter, you’ll see that reruns of Big Bang Theory and L&O:SVU get higher ratings than the soaps. For crying out loud, Let’s Make A Deal gets higher ratings at a fraction of the cost. Soaps are a dinosaur and a relic in today’s world.

      • James Spaldin

        I am fantastic!
and so is the fact that Daytime Soaps still play!!

        • cab

Big Blondie fan. I agree with your comment completely. I have preordered the Pollinator album and have concert seats in Toronto to see them. Blondie has always put out album after album to keep their fans wanting more Blondie.

          • James Spaldin

Blondie are going to have a hit with Pollinator – the video for Long Time makes them feel relevant in 2017 and is so true to the orinal band spirit – I love it! New York, New York !!!

      • Maria

True but as far as game shows and talk shows, the advertisers prefer the soap operas to them.

        • Jay Last

The exact opposite is true. Otherwise All My Children would still be on the air. They will take Ellen, Hot Bench, and Judge Judy over the archaic General Hospital any day of the week.

          • Maria

So why hasn’t it been canceled? When I worked at NBC, I spoke to many advertisers and they feel they get more bang or their buck with the soaps. Shows like Ellen and Judge Judy are chosen by affiliates, not the network. They’re syndicated.

          • Jay Last

The soaps are DEAD. Just like Sears, CDs, newspapers, and film cameras. It is inevitable. You may not like it but you’re not dealing with reality if you think anything otherwise. NOOOOOOO advertiser – NONE – is foaming at the mouth to sponsor GH or even Y&R for less than 5 million viewers, none of which are in the 18-49 demo they crave, when they can spend even less elsewhere.

          • James Spaldin

And the band played on (and on) ……Days is on NBC tomorrow!

          • TruthSquad

I agree Marie. They get a lot of bang for their buck with soaps. Y&R has more total daily viewers than most primetime shows. The measuring of woman is outdated since I think more men than woman watch these days. Just look at this board. I think that CBS realizes this and even though the daytime demos may be awful (since men are not counted as a key demo) but a big daytime audience provides an opportunity for a larger primetime audience.

          • JayTN

“Days” is NBC’s only daytime series, though the 9am and 10am hours of “Today” are technically counted as daytime series. NBC likely hasn’t found anything that it likes to replace “Days”. I feel very confident that if “Days” is getting the ratings it is getting now at this time next year, it will get canceled.

    • SoapArmageddon

There in no way the number of viewers of Days and Emmerdale can be compared fairly. The UK has a total population 0f 66 million. Emmerdale is indeed popular if 8% of the total population is tuning in. The US has a population of 322 million. Days cannot be said to be popular when only 0.7% of the population is watching it now.

      • Brett Jonathan Bradley-Howarth

What also needs to be considered is that Emmerdale is a PRIME TIME Soap, it airs when people are home, not while they’re out at work, there is no fair comparison between the UK and US soaps.

        • James Spaldin

Hi Brett I just think that when you consider a primetime show having 5 Million viewers in the UK is considered a success then 2 million daytime USA is not ‘abominable’ as it might have once been thought.
You have to realize that the UK (Primetime) Soaps used to have 12-13 million viewers in the past. I was surprised, given the population of the USA, just how low some primetime shows rate nowadays
In the UK, anything that gets even close to 1 million viewers for the lesser networks is seen as a good thing at the moment.
On ITV – the main commercial broadcaster, drama programmes that involve big budgets often can get 3/4 million viewers and this is seen as workable – presumably against percentage of audience share and of course against ‘demographics’
I have seen numerous showings of US Daytime Soaps cancelled in the UK over the years because of low ratings and so have a good understanding of how these things work or (in the case of Soaps) don’t
Channel 5 cancelled DOOL in 2001 because it was attracting just over 200,000 viewers at 10.00am in the morning. Channel 5 now have programmes in primetime that

        • I’d love to see CW or MY Network do Y&R in prime time every night.
Production costs would be cheap, and money would be made.

          • JayTN

MyNetworkTV actually did the primetime soap every day. That didn’t last long and they were eventually forced to cut down on the days of the week that the soaps aired until they did away with the genre entirely. Now, MNTV is nothing more than a syndication service, although I’ve read that during certain weeks, its ratings rival those of the CW.

      • James Spaldin

Yes, but it is daytime programming as opposed to Flagship Primetime Programme of the Main Commercial Broadcaster of the UK – so it isn’t too bad in comparison – in my opinion – just sayin’

    • jesse

Days is still around for at least 1 yr.Hollyoaks is more similar than Emmerdale. They both have low ratings, badly written, cheap production.Main difference Hollyoaks producers care about the fans.

  • Brett Jonathan Bradley-Howarth

B&B was terrible for years with endless Liam Spencer love triangles and now it’s finally good again with the Spectras and the ratings tank, I don’t get it.

    • monzo

B&B has always depended on Y&R, so if the lead-in gets weaker, the lead-out follows.

      • TV&MovieBuff

But that has not always been the case with B&B in the last few years. There was a time esp. in the years of MAB and following that B&B was the only soap that was increasing it’s 18-49 demo while Y&R was bleeding out this demo every year.

B&B was setting even bigger record ratings than Y&R was. Last year during the Maya story esp. while Y&R was doing bad under Pratt B&B was doing well for awhile and even getting good ratings.

I remember even one week in one of the demos B&B tied Y&R for 1st place in the last few years. It was big talk on the boards.

And then the bottom began to fall out for B&B. And now even last week when Y&R was way up B&B was even down. B&B has proven in the last few years it could stand on it’s own and was poised to be #1 if Y&R fail, but Bell has just fumbled the ball big time. He has one of the most talented writing staffs there are is in soaps today. He needs to step back and let them step up.

    • The Spectra story is horrible. Characters like Darlita are horrible!
It was a slick but poorly written story. Ridge and Quinn are bad, too.

      • TruthSquad

Ridge and Quinn, annoying. Spectra is growing on me.

    • TruthSquad

I was not liking the Spectra revival but resumed watching this week and have to say they have done an excellent job in making it interesting.

  • cab

If the networks would only realize that they have got to promote their shows more in Primetime like they used to do, ratings might improve some. They sure do promote their primetime shows during the soaps, i.e. NBC. Most of the promotion for Days I only see through online services and not on the network it airs on. Sure the previous writers tried to increase viewers with stunts and acts of violence, but they had to try anything to attract the new audience that is emerging in the 21st century. Will continue to watch Days as it still is exciting for me and hope that other viewers continue to watch and that those who left come back when Allison comes back and stay with the show.

    • James Spaldin

Alison Sweeny is supposed to be on Days of our Lives – it’s just the way it’s meant to be!

      • lulu

Ugh no, Alison Sweeney first is too good for this lame soap and secondly is coming back for a LIMITED visit as a favor SHE is doing, end of story.

        • purz

          Well that’s just your opinion.

        • cab

Allison owes her success to Days, and its’ fans. she really isn’t that great of an actress, but can handle things with the training she got on Days. Days is only lame if you call all the other soaps lame.

    • Lena

Folks watching the primetime dramas are not interested in the crap airing during the day

      • James Spaldin

Lena they should be aware of what they are missing!

      • lulu

        right in the money

    • TV&MovieBuff

The primetime shows have the budgets for the promotions. The daytime shows don’t. That airtime that the networks give to promoting shows is not free airtime. It’s paid airtime too. The airtime used comes out of that shows budget for advertising. The shows with a bigger budget are going to get more promotion because they can afford it. Its the same with advertising for a big corporate sponsored product over a Mom and Pop shop product.

  • FoxyRoxyy

Tune into Y&R today. They shot scenes outside a dumpster at CBS Television City. IT’s so sad what has happened to Y&R and all daytime soaps. Shooting in allys with garbage. That’s The result of Sally hitting all time lows. They now shoot at the dumpster where all of Sally’s boring scripts land.

    • Dumpsterdad

You are proficient in dumpsters. Trashy.

      • diego

        love the comments

  • TruthSquad

I took a break from B&B for a couple of weeks.I wasn’t enjoying the Spectra revival or Quidge. I have to say though that the two things B&B can brag exclusively about is how nimble they are and their production values. It’s not only good again but great. They can turn it around on a dime and did. I wish the rest of the soaps could manage their production values the way B&B does..

    • cab

And they have a budget that can take them out of the studio and go to Australia. One of the things that budget cuts have caused ratings to tank.

  • TruthSquad

The outdoor scenes on Y&R aren’t really necessary. IMO. It diminishes the intensity. Other than that. All good.

  • Dianne

About BB – Caroline has disappeared since the character had her baby. According to SOD, she was last on back in October. No doubt this is a major (not the only one though) reason for the ratings drop among women. Since Bell decided to give her character a kid, it now looks like the actress is now out of a steady job. Not saying she will never be back, but not as a regular I don’t think. Usually on BB, younger women characters miscarry.

  • Michael Taylor

TOUPS, I WANT LAST WEEK’S RATINGS NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • TV&MovieBuff

      They have been posted.
