I love this genre, but those are bloody numbers across the board. Somebody save he soaps.

    • ctshar

They all just need writing fixes except days has the production quality issue. For me, B&B shouldn’t have built the spectra stuff DURING sweeps, and I need more avant stories to pull me back to faithful viewer. GH is pure writing trash focused on boring geriatric mobster and his gorgeous, now stepford-wife Carly. Love LW, who just sits around making excuses for her hubby’s violence. GH just needs to replace their sexist WOMEN HWs and add romance and fun back to this funereal show.

      • TruthSquad

The Spectra thing is awful on B&B. I will take Julius and Viv Avant over Silly Sally, Sol and Darlita any day. Oh brother.

        • ctshar

I like the spectra, but takes time to get invested in the characters. B&B should have introduced slowly with sally and her sister first integrated with existing canvas and then adding the rest. Long-term I really like the spectra gang if they become a legit rival, but I LOVE my avants, they got me hooked on B&B. I LOVE julius, viv, nicole and sasha.

          • TruthSquad

Love the Avants. Nicole has blossomed.

          • Michelle

The Spectra storyline is garbage. It was a very bad idea. I am okay with a competing Fashion house but not Spectra. They will never be a real rival for Forrester. Bell’s writing is horrendous. He doesn’t take the time to develop characters. Bell goes from zero to one hundred. The ratings are reflecting that fact. The Avants are all but gone.

          • ctshar

I agree if they are just ripoffs, then the spectra will be garbage. I just see that ripoff as temporary, to get them past a rough patch. I hate it, but believe it’s just to intro the group AND set up the connections with canvas characters.

  • Bantilau Regnies

Sally the savior keeps impressing me LMAO

    • FoxyRoxyy

LOL. Losing 476,000 viewers since last year signals a major problem. Why are CBS and Sony allowing her boring writing to continue.

      • robert

it’s mind-boggling why nothing is changing with the stories

  • Salem Spectator

    SOS!

    • yawning

      Ron will save Days!…Not!!!!!!!! lol

      • Salem Spectator

Save Our Ship (genre) / Save Our Soaps is what I was going for.

      • Tammy Bostick

Days is a train wreck but with inconsistent bad writing what would they think i was a fan for 33 years loved the hortons and brady’s i got a vcr in the 80s bc of Bo andhope peter and kristian chemistry unmatchable but with the destruction of great. characters that we loved nasty writing i can’t watch !!! And rafe and hope is just sickening to watch disappointed in Kristian for staying g with a show that destroyed your character!! I m sorry it should be cancelled with what it has become !!!

        • jacky

You are 100 percent right! Today was St Patrick’s Day and there no mention of it even though the Brady’s are Irish. They continue to ruin the show. You’re not missing much.

  • Salem Spectator

I’m hoping Y&R makes it to it’s 45th anniversary March 26th of next year, GH surpasses ATWT for 2nd longest lived soap in September and DOOL makes gains with RC at the helm.

    B&B, I’ve got nothing for you. I can’t believe you’re still around.

  • MaximumUniverse

Wow, these ratings seem to be in a steady decline. Y&R continues to take one body blow after another. CBS & Sony have a real problem on their hands. Sussman & Young are sinking in quicksand. The show is a disaster. The fans aren’t happy. Ignore them at your own risk.

  • Salem Spectator

From red lipstick to “in the red,” Y&R budget cuts loom.

    • robert

they may have already started. the show is looking so cheap

      • Salem Spectator

I don’t watch, but I suspected they would make cuts to pay for Kay and Sally. Now further cuts will be needed because of them.

  • FoxyRoxyy

CBS and Sony cannot be happy with the disastrous ratings for Y&R. Sussman and Young have been a very bad fit for the show. The viewer losses are staggering. Yikes!

    • robert

      it’s just not working

  • JONNYSBRO

Is JFP having a martini somewhere having last laugh? Ratings are down almost 500000 from JFP. Pratt just left Star I honestly would take him back show was much more entettaining. Sally Sussman is just awful terrible. The show has nothing going on and Mal Young is a terrible EP production values went down, lighting is awful and he has zero vision.

    • robert

I never liked everything JFP did but her production was much better than Mal’s. she always made the show look good. now it looks so cheap and the lighting is terrible. their is barely any music anymore. and the stories stink. all we’re seeing is people standing around

  • JONNYSBRO

The funny thing is Jean Passanante and Shelly Altman are the only success. GH has had consistent ratings.

    • monzo

GH had two big weeks in storytelling, but just like the hospital didn’t blow up, ratings didn’t either. I don’t like this über-dramatic arcs, as if Jason would ever die in that elevator. A turn-off is mentioning Morgan as a previous, wonderful child over and over again like he was a saint who would save the world when he was nothing more as a spoiled little brat.

    • Vendi Smith

Correct. Jean and Shelly are doing a fine job with the 18-49. GH is the only soap that hasn’t been bleeding out in that all important category for the last year.

    • TruthSquad

I have been enjoying GH. I started watching again a couple of weeks ago. So far so good.

  • jesse

Days and GH posters are hilarious.Days ratings are in the toilet just above 2 million and the demos are awful.GH with its tired stunts and the same old Sonny/Carly garbage isn’t any better.Y&R since LML has had a revolving door of hw/xp’s that come and go but the fans keep watching.I”ll take Sally/Mal over JFP/Pratt every time.

    • vivien

Days and GH are terrible right now, it is true. If we are still watching it is because we fell in love with characters like GH’s Anna and DAYS’ Patch when the shows were GOOD and well written. We like watching their stories continue. Anna’s getting another grandbaby, Patch just remarried the love of his life, Kayla. I don’t know what younger viewers are getting out of watching. There are no great love stories, that’s for sure! Olivia’s return started out promising, as a story opportunity for Anna, but ended with the focus on Sonny and Carly, as usual. Same old/same old is right!

      • valerytoms

Agreed! When I started to watch Days in the 80’s and 90’s most of the cast with interesting storylines were a bit older or my age (20’s-30’s) that I rooted/tuned in for. Today, I can not see a young audience tuning in to watch mostly people above 40 in ridiculous story lines.

        • Mandy

DAYS has a consistent problem with not being able to write for anyone under 40. Look who they’ve lost or let go in the past couple of years — Jordan, Ben, Serena, Theresa, Philip, Belle, Shawn, EJ, Sami, Will.

I have some hope with characters like Chad, Abby, Gabi, JJ, Lani, Eli, but the writing needs to improve. I like Theo and maybe they can reboot the teens if they get a decent Ciara recast.

  • monzo

What’s next for B&B? Goodbye Spectras, hello again Liam’s next lovetriangle?!? I hope not, because I enjoy B&B these days. CBS should know that B&B’s numbers depend on Y&R’s numbers and not the current storyline. B&B is just a lead-out show that would have been cancelled 10 years ago if it had another timeslot or would have aired on another network. B&B has never been really good, it just has been lucky.

    • Vendi Smith

I have been saying that for years.

B&B would be in last place (not Days) if they were in any other timeslot. B&B would never be able to stand on their own with the American audience.

    • TruthSquad

The New Spectra’s are not doing it for me.

      • robert

i really hate it. it never should of happened

        • TruthSquad

The good thing about B&B is they could dump the Spectra story as fast as it came. Let’s hope. Not happy with Quidge either.

          • Amie

I don’t like the storyline and I haven’t watch it since Wednesday and its not good.

          • TruthSquad

            It’s bad. No doubt.

          • Richie

You didn’t watch it since Wed. because it was pre-empted for sports Thurs. & Fri.

  • Martin

Y&R no surprise here and ratings will get much worse with Mal and Sally

    • charlie bracken

why worse? the show has IMO turned around for the better since Sally started 3 months ago. The fans IMO have become very Nit picky about who should write their shows, they all wants faster moving plot driven Crap that has action then the normal slow moving character driven stuff we are seeing now. I for one have been enjoying it.

      • Bantilau Regnies

Yeah, for the better, just take a look on these ratings LOL

      • Keanna

Charlie, like I said before don’t bother, these guys are trolls.

        • Bantilau Regnies

The ratings are with the “trolls”. You should wonder why.

          • FoxyRoxyy

The Nielsen viewers must be trolls too because they are tuning out by the hundreds of thousands. Almost half a million trolls have tuned out since last year. That’s alot of trolls.

      • Amie

Damn We don’t want no plots and killers crap.We too focus on Vetarans actors and young actors generations.Dont pay attention to trolls. They are disgusting. That was Bill Bell wants. The show is doing good.

        • charlie bracken

          Exactly

    • FoxyRoxyy

Amen. I think we’ll be seeing alot more numbers like last Thursday, when Y&R just barely got above 4 million. Considering that just last year when the show consistently got above 5 million, the viewers are rejecting Sally and Mal’s vision loud and clear! How low can they go should be their new motto.

    • Amie

Demos went up.It will already turn around.People should stop complaining about the writers.Sal and Kay belongs on Y&R NOTT Jill and Charles.Shut up

  • Vendi Smith

Y&R is the cure for insomnia under Sally. What a drastic drop in viewership in a matter of weeks that should be giving CBS and Sony some major buyers remorse. The stories are all so painfully boring and literally nothing of note is even happening. Y&R will be making yet another writing change by the fall cause Sally is obviously not the answer.

    • robert

Sally was not the right choice to write the show. she is too outdated and too slow for todays audience. none of the stories have any big impact

  • Keanna

GH, guess the people who watch it out of habit, because there’s NOTHING endearing about this show, It’s predictable, there’s no payoff, Jelly has shown they don’t care about soap history and need to go.

Days, just counting the days until Ron’s writing starts.

For all of you, Y&R fans complaining about the show, trust me, a lot of us fans of other shows wish we had your problems.

  • Cloris Ellis

The daytime genre seems to have run its course. For years, writers can’t seem to create anything new, and continually rehash stories that were ridiculous the first 40 times they were used. Parents and siblings swapping same spouses every few months is not entertaining. When obnoxious child actors die or get kidnapped (in the soap), it’s a relief. 60 yr old women with 25 yr old boys is gagworthy. Stop trying to shock and simply write a good story.

    • prancer

I agree with everything you said. There becomes a delusional factor when you’re on the air as long as you are with these shows. They were so comfortable with the audience sticking with them that they actually got sloppy, they got lazy.

  • tanmie

Thank you Dena and Ryan. I tried to watch yesterday and turned it off when Hope walked in on Rafe taking a bubble bath.

    • tillersun

That was a complete waste of water and bubbles. It was not sexy at all. Maybe they were trying to appeal to old gay men or something. After the lawsuit, they are now trying to push interracial couples. It is so obvious!

      • Salem Spectator

Was the lawsuit started in the 70’s? That’s when DOOL first had an interracial romance between David (white) and Valerie (black). Was the lawsuit started 10 years ago? That’s when Bo and Hope & Abe and Lexi were good friends who’s children (Theo/black & Ciara/white) have been the best of friends. JJ (white) and Lani (black) make sense because they work together and he is of Horton lineage.

You know nothing, but I know your comment seems racist!

      • Salem Spectator

As for interracial couples involving other ethnicities, that’s no big deal either!

    • robert

i hope ending Hope and Rafe is at the top of Ron’s list

      • daniella

Amen! Rafe needs someone younger so he can have children. Hope is hooking up with her nieces ex husband..that’s gross!

    • Y&R#1

WHAT!!!!!!!!!! That’s when it finally got interesting…..(Watched Days & GH as CBS was pre-empted for March madness)

  • Salem Spectator

I have no problem with race mixing. I don’t like Rafe and Hope together but not because they are of different races. They just don’t have chemistry.

  • Salem Spectator

I like JJ and Lani, but Eli and Lani or Eli and Gabi would be good too.

  • Salem Spectator

I like Chad and Gabi and I like Abby and Dario, but I like Chad and Abby best.

  • Salem Spectator

Theo and Claire are interesting, but end game should be Theo and Ciara. The problem is the Ciara actress is horrible.

  • Salem Spectator

I love the Horton family gaining a black family member. Eli is off to a strong start.

    • YouFool

You forgot to mention Sonny and Paul (half Asian) in your ridiculous and pointless rant..They settled out of court..period! and now trying to look diverse

      • tawani

It does sound like they settled to keep her quiet. Good for her for standing up to them.

      • Salem Spectator

You’re the fool, you piece of crap!

  • TruthSquad

There is no denying the ratings are not what we would all hope for. I am especially disappointed with B&B. They were doing so well with the successful addition of the Avant family, the Quinn/Eric marriage was going well and suddenly they hit the gas and changed direction with Quidge and the Spectra bunch. Yikes. If B&B could just excercise occassional self control and not completely change directions it would IMO benefit them tremedoulsy. I think the new Spectra thing may be a death blow.

RE: Y&R, It is a bit slow but I’m enjoying the show very much, I can see the web that Sally is spinning. That said, with the ratings consitintly dropping since last year at this time, the powers that be may be trigger happy.

    • robert

i’m very disappointed in B&B. the show was so good about a year and a half ago, then they suddenly changed direction. i hate the Spectra stuff. it was so unneccesary

      • TruthSquad

I agree. The Spectra characters are ridiculous. They also could have gotten a lot more mileage from Quinn as matriarch without her succumbing to Ridge so soon or at all.

    • FoxyRoxyy

Sally is spinning the viewers away from the show. Her stories are so boring.

      • TruthSquad

In fairness the show has been bleeding viewers for a year now. That said, they haven’t come back either.

        • FoxyRoxyy

In fairness to Sally, she has bled viewers and she has not increased ratings in any demos or viewers.

          • soaprealityfan

No, you are WRONG. The ratings have fallen since she took over. However, you can’t say it’s because of her. Many viewers don’t even know who writes these shows. Many are tuning out after Pratt’s disaster. Many are just tired of bad writing on soaps. Sally cannot do battle all by herself against the trend of falling ratings when current audiences would rather be on their smartphones, and loyal viewers are now entering nursing homes by the day.

      • Richie

The only boring thing here are your repetitive posts about your dislike of Y&R, its EP & its writers. Which BTW I don’t even believe you watch.

        • FoxyRoxyy

Read the ratings. They lost 142,000 viewers last week and almost half a million from last year. It seems like you can’t accept facts. Of course I do not watch every episode. It’s too boring!! lol The Nielsen viewers obviously feel the same way – they are tuning out by the hundreds of thousands. Fact.

          • Richie

Wrong, we accept the fact: ratings are down, all shows, OK. But your CONSTANT & repeated rants are not solving or helping the matter. You post the same thing OVER & OVER, WEEK AFTER WEEK.. We get it.

          • FoxyRoxyy

You’ll save yourself alot of stress if you use the block user button. I will continue to point out the fact that Y&R has had terrible numbers since Mal and especially Sally took over. They are a disaster.

    • Mandy

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that B&B ratings took a nosedive not long after the new screechy Spectra gang arrived. I don’t mind them, but I also don’t want to see them eight days a week. My mom used to be pretty faithful with her B&B watching, but she’s stopped because it’s too much Spectra 2.0. I suspect she’s not the only one.

      • TruthSquad

I stopped watching and I am a consistent viewer. It’s just too out there. Hopefully they pull the plug on it fast and return to their regular level of farfetchness.

  • Paul

Days nearly under 2 million viewers if they don’t stop the rot of losing viewers every week this may be the year Days actually will do the unthinkable and achieve this. Look at Demos for women 18 to 49 soon they be another new low in that as well. All i say is Days is very lucky to be renewed and they have NBC backing them because if it been another network it would be axed with these numbers.

    • berta

I held on and I am so disappointed in Days. I will stop watching when Arianne Zucker is off screen. I am so glad she opened up about all her issues with the show and her storylines.

      • Paul

I stopped watching when Sami and EJ left it has sucked since they have gone now Ari will gone soon as well all the popular actors are have left no wonder the show is going down hill.

        • berta

Unless Ron makes drastic cast and writing changes the show will continue to hang from a cliff. They are lucky NBC has been so good to them.

          • monzo

Ron could save GH because he watched the show since he was young, so he felt the momentum back then. I read that he’s watching old episodes of Days for awhile now. Does this mean he refreshes his memory or is he getting to know the heydays of the show for the first time? I think if he had been a loyal follower of Days for decades he can save the soap, but if he just started really getting into it, I think it will be very difficult for him.

          • vivien

Ron watched GH when he was a kid too and was very excited when he got to write for the 50th anniversary. He brought back so many characters and I thought he did a great job, for the most part. He can’t please everybody! His faves are not my faves, so I saw more Heather than I ever wanted to, lol, but he really went out of his way to harken back to GH’s ’80s heyday, and that’s what he’ll probably try to do with DAYS. Except those of us who started watching in the ’80s are ‘getting up there’ in age, so he might want to concentrate more on ’90s nostalgia’. And for heaven’s sake, give us some passionate, romantic YOUNG couples who are CRAZY about each other, in the mold of Bo&Hope, Patch&Kayla.

      • shirly

I am sure they wrote Arianne Zucker (Nicole) off or she didn’t get what she was asking for in terms of money. She is no spring chicken and has been on soaps for years. If there were other big opportunities they would of snatched her by now. Perhaps she will make some lifetime or hallmark movies since she can capture the Days fan base like Ali and Peter do (in his play). Or perhaps the election made her a little more famous and she is trying to jump on the band wagon.

        • lulu

Ali Sweeney has MORE than a Days fanbase..she is well known outside of daytime unlike Arianne Zucker..don’t compare.

  • padange

I think TPTB at Y&R need to realize that something in their current vision isn’t working and some changes are necessary. Urgently.

    • robert

Chick, and the Villy hour is at the top of the list that needs to change. more vets need to be utilized better, and the pacing needs to pick up. it’s just too slow

    • TruthSquad

I agree. There a lot of pre-existing damage but something needs to happen to excite the key 18-49’ers. I see where Sally is going back she needs to pick up the pace.

      • charlie bracken

IA with that Given the damage pratt did I think it’s going to be a while. I like where Sally is going hopefully things will pick up soon

        • TruthSquad

I understand the outcry from viewers that things are moving slowly. I get it. It is like going from riding around in a cab with a drunk driver at 70 mph to a slow and steady ride that is admittedly less eventful at the moment. IMO the worst thing that could happen would be to switch writing regimes again. All that said, I am not sure what Mal Young brings to the table. I actually wonder if on the co-EP side someone like Edward Scott or another Y&R vet wouldnt be a more compatible choice to compliment Sally and Kay?

          • charlie bracken

IA I think Mal is doing well he has been at the show for what a year now and took over for Jill In July, given the fact he has made some good changes I like him. as for the Fans out cry i think they need to take a step back and look at the bigger picture which is Bill did this sort of thing for years and Now sally is Just repeating it so what if the stories are moving slower I see nothing wrong with that. The show IMO has made a big leap forward in the past 3 months given the Damage Pratt did It’s being repaired.

  • robert

the daytime soaps are in trouble. bad writing is taking down this genre

    • kyles

You are 100 percent right! I am tired of people trying to blame time slot changes and/or preemption’s.

      • Amie

        Amen

  • Happy Accidents
    • doug

      Thanks for posting!

Brad Bell cannot write for women past a certain age. He also has killed off quite a few female characters. Male actors from cancelled soaps find a home on BB, but not female actresses.
The irony is that until she retired, Bell relied on Susan Flannery to carry the show. For the longest time, it was the Brooke & Stephanie fued he recycled.
I can if I had the time, write a novel like post on all the examples where Bell cannot write for women going back to the 2000’s. I’m one of the women who used to love BB, but no longer care about it.

    • Amie

Brad Bell better do something or he will let go from the show. His late dad wont be happy about this.

      • JayTN

Bradley Bell owns B&B so it is going to be hard to get rid of him.

  • Amie

I’m glad Y&R is the only show went up in Demo ratings.B&B and Days,What is the heck is going on with the ratings.I didn’t watch B&B.Brad Bell,The show is 30 this year and needs to get it together. Its boring.

Dena Higley is going to kill Days. Four more months to watch how she ruins all the popular characters. Ken Corday’s the reason the lights are going out on his own show. If anyone thinks the show is going to get better because another fired writer from another soap is starting, they are fooling themselves. I’ve always said that Days is the one soap that is stuck in neutral. The same old characters that have been around for 30 years. All the new couples are either written off or destroyed. Most of the main characters are in their 50’s, 60’s or 70’s and most new generation soap watchers don’t get excited about watching old people repeating the same old stories like kidnapping, deathly sickness and long lost kids. I don’t find anything interesting about watching Steve, Kayla, Kate, Andre, Hope, John or Marlena running around like they are 30 years old again and rolling in the sack. It’s gross.

    • ctshar

Dena should be permanently exiled from TV writing. I don’t watch Days but I was snowed in, tried to watch rather than start streaming and binge. Just wanted to try watching Days after lunch. OMG, Days is just painfully bad right now. Very old feeling show too, and the opening needs to be updated. Felt like the cozi channel. Plenty of shows have older actors and many on days look GREAT, but the wardrobe felt very dated, the lighting as always, awful. So sad.

    • Tammy Bostick

so true i was a fan of Bo and hope the great couples from the 80s including Dr and Mrs h ! asked for a vcr to record bo and hope should have been the next Dr and mrs h with the rich history that has been destroyed and these ppl that like to see hope with rafe ?! it’s gross and wanting hope to have a baby ?! she’s 53 a mom and a grandmother Claire is her granddaughter which is never mentioned !!! i’m disappointed in some of these great actors allowing themselves to be props or given stupid storylines im sorry the show should have been removed bc Corday higley and others have killed the heart of a once great show his parents created rant over

  • Pete Ra

Despite all the sniping back and forth here, all of the soaps are suffering ratings declines. Here’s hoping for an upswing soon!

  • FoxyRoxyy

Game shows and The Talk – cheaply produced – are probably saving Angelica McDaniel’s job at this point. Y&R hit new demo lows during February sweeps and B&B has new lows now – all under Angelica’s watch. She has to be held accountable for the mess that the CBS soaps have become. I hope to hear of her firing soon so that a new person can get Y&R and B&B back on track. These soaps are dying and no one who is in charge seems to care.

    • Salem Spectator

There have been whispers about turning The Price Is Right and Let’s Make A Deal into 90 minute programs.

      • Ang

Where exactly have you seen those “whispers”? Can you share where this is being discussed?

        • Salem Spectator

My sister works at an agency where she hears a lot. I don’t know if the whispers are in writing.

          • RIchie

            MORE FAKE NEWS.

          • Kevin Little

They could cancel GH, B&B and Y&R and leave DAYS and DAYS would still find a way to finish in last place.

That’s how bad that show is anymore.

          • cab

You are funny. At least they would be #1.

          • Ang

I’ve never seen anyone mention extending those two shows. CBS is more invested and has been successful with their Daytime lineup.

Do you even watch Y&R (I know you don’t watch BB) or do you just mention this because you don’t like that Days gets so much criticism when ratings are posted?

          • Salem Spectator

I don’t watch any soaps other than DOOL, but I’m rooting for all to stay afloat. The genre is dying and one more death could kill them all. My sister has never lied to me that I am aware of, but what she hears could be just gossip, but we all know where there’s smoke, there’s fire.

I can see all the networks going the cheaper route, game shows or what have you. The CBS game shows make very good money. Less overhead and more viewers plus advertisements within the actual games equal big profits.

All the soaps are living on borrowed time. Another failed soap will push viewers away from the others.

    • ctshar

CBS also sells their soaps oversees and expects to make money streaming as well. CBS has their subscription streaming service they’re pushing, so CBS soaps can make money for CBS many ways. Movies make just as much in global markets as US now, if soaps try the same, they should thrive.

B&B really needs to just pick up the story writing. Seems like british soaps have tons of stories going on but US soaps are too plodding. I like how Ron wrote GH in terms of pacing, wish all soaps would pick up the pace.

      • padange

Sony sells Y&R, and Bell Dramatic Serial Company sells B&B oversees, not CBS. CBS buys a license.

        • ctshar

I always thought CBS owned those two since P&G owned ATWT & GL. I’m glad ABC owns GH gives them incentive to keep them going when ratings are slipping like now. Thanks for the info!

          • padange

There are rumors that CBS is interested in buying Sony Pictures, so this might happen :).

  • Ang

All the Soaps are in trouble. Younger people are not watching these shows in the same numbers they did when I was growing up so it’s not a growing genre. Almost everyone had a Soap when I was a kid, they would even be loyal to a specific network. I was kinda loyal to NBC in that I watched Days and sometimes Santa Barbara or Sunset Beach but never CBS or ABC shows. I don’t think the kids in their teens even know what these shows are. They just have too many choices and Soaps aren’t making the cut.

We just need to enjoy them while we can…

    • gertrude

My grandkids laugh at Days and at me when I try to explain what is going on and they visit me.

    • debbie

That is so true. I started with NBC because back then that channel had the clearest reception for me and I was always too lazy to get up and turn the channel (yes before we had remotes) or fix my antenna. Now that I am back home during the day I find myself using the remote a lot when I watch DOOL either to turn it off or watch a cable network. So far, i can not get into watching another soap on CBS or ABC. Back then, I never got a long with the kids in HS that watched the other soaps. I was in a DOOL clique at school (I thought I was Hope lol and tried to copy her eye brows and hair).

  • Dianne

BB turns 30 this Thursday. Except for Mick Cain/CJ, I haven’t read about any past actors returning to celebrate. Something I notice with BB that I don’t notice with either YR or DOOL is once long time actors leave, they move on.

  • Falconcrest

It is rather amusing on soap central board discussion groups to read the many rationales as to why the ratings are sinking. One GH poster even blamed the bad weather because a lot of people may have lost electricity. Yeah, true but it is not like 5 million people were watching before that. These things only get worse the harder they try. I pretty much stopped watching GH because it is painful to watch Sonny continue to destroy the show with his never ending presence.

  • Carrie Walker

SNL is getting primetime now, why not put forth the investment of DOOL and air their Friday show instead? The primetime shows are advertised during daytime but barely the other way around.

    • TruthSquad

I think that is a great idea. There was a time when Y&R had primetime episodes that aired on Friday nights. I do not know what the ratings were. Now they seldom promote daytime shows outside of daytime. Aside from age of genre, IMO the networks have contributed to the decline in soap ratings by lack of promotion. What networks should realize is that if viewers watch during daytime they are more likely to stay on the station throughout the day and into primetime.

      • Mandy

In the 90s, I would watch some NBC prime time shows just to see the DAYS promos. They would always air at least one. Now I watch prime time NBC almost every night and I can’t tell you the last time I saw a DAYS promo.

    • scott16475

Because unlike DOOL, the ratings for SNL have gone up. A lot. Most – if not all – is thanks to their take on this current administration but regardless of the reason SNL ratings are moving upward while DOOL ratings, well, aren’t.

    • TV&MovieBuff

With ratings down across daytime and primetime, the breaks in the shows is geared more today to ads that pay for those shows budgets. Those TV and magazine promos come out of a shows advertising budget. The network does not give them away free. I’m sure that SNL’s advertising budget is a whole lot higher than Days is.

Back years ago when daytime shows were advertised in prime time all the time the shows had higher ratings and higher budgets. They could afford to advertise in primetime. Today things have changed.

  • cab

People today are just plain stupid. They complain about how soaps should evolve, and when they do, they still find something to complain about. Days with its’ gay storyline was trying to evolve, but viewers complained and that storyline was softened. When Sonny and Paul kiss now, it is more like a peck on the cheek, no passion. There are plenty of other programming that have gay characters(Walking Dead, Empire, Modern Family), movies with gay characters and even sports programming with gay people, yet there is a backlash in daytime. Look what happened to All My Children, One Life to Live, when a gay character was front and center.
The networks have to come up with a new vitalization process for the soaps if they are to continue, that is if the networks even care for its’ daytime viewers. Although I think Days opening sequence brings fans together, I think it is time for an update. Once February sweeps stopped, I found myself kind of bored with what was happening on Days, but I am a fan and will continue to watch till they have disappeared into history.

    • Marie Struve

So if nighttime gay is okay, what happened with The New Normal and One Big Happy? The basic foundation of daytime drama are women, hetero women, who want to see what life could be like. We don’t want to watch two men getting it on, or two women. And, BTW, gays are not better parents than heteros, if they were, babies wouldn’t need a male and female to be created….

      • Jay Last

Ladies and gentlemen, meet the spokesperson for ALL women. Because you know, they all think exactly alike and all have the same opinion.

And, BTW, pretty much anyone would be better parents than yours, considering how you turned out.

      • Salem Spectator

The gay stuff doesn’t make or break me, but is a part of life, so I feel they should be represented.

        • vivien

they should be represented, but Days went overboard. It was a big, giant preachfest. We don’t want to be preached to. Case in point, low ratings for “When we Rise”. I felt gypped by Days when they had the big, splashy, AGENDA-FILLED gay wedding. Because it was at the expense of a big, splashy wedding for couples like Ericole and Ejami, who had actually EARNED it!

          • Salem Spectator

I’m still upset over the Ericole situation. Because Ari is leaving, Jeneric might be the next best thing.

          • vivien

Ughhh, I’m not even watching right now, DAYS has got the couples all wrong! What are they trying to force with Brady&Nicole, Chloe&Eddie?!, Abby&Dario, Gabi&Chad, Theo&Claire OR Ciara, and yes, JenEric .. all are boring at best and offensive at worst.

          • Jigg

            Water Off a Duck’s Back

        • Dianne

If its 2 hot men kissing I am fine with it also.

      • tammy

You could reach for the remote control and change channels – it’s a radical concept but it might just work for you.

      • Ang

There is so much stupid in this post…Pathetic.

    • Robron

If its entertaining most people will watch a show regardless of race, color, religion, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, ancestry, age, etc. Good writing is most important above everything else.

  • JayTN

CBS continues to show what a balanced daytime lineup looks like. The Daytime Emmy nominations were announced today (Wednesday) on “The Talk”, which also featured stars from B&B celebrating that soap’s 30 years.

CBS hasn’t put out many press releases this season talking about their daytime line-up, soaps or otherwise, so it’s hard to gauge whether the viewer decline is confined to the soap duo or applies to the line-up as a whole. I do know that “The Talk” is getting ratings relative to what they were earlier in the season. It started the season with 2.64 million viewers with a high of 2.88 million in November (“The Talk” had 2.91 million viewers during the inflated New Year’s week when it only aired four days) and pulled in 2.70 million viewers last week, which was shortened to three days due to NCAA Basketball coverage.

  • TV&MovieBuff

I’ve been binge-watching Hawaii Five-O on Netflix of late, and I have been fully reminded from watching it what is wrong with daytime soaps and fully why they continue to lose ratings year upon year. People can throw out multiple reasons but it all boils down to the new way in which daytime dramas are structured, written and presented.

A story on the show involved the deaths of McGarrett’s parents, the search for their killers, etc — that played out not just over few episodes but bits and pieces over seasons. Finally it was revealed that his mother had faked her death and she was brought back to Hawaii. McGarrett’s sister had been seen a few times over the first few seasons but nothing major. But she was brought in and given several key scenes of her own that revealed so much about the story from a different point of view, and made you care more about what the family was going through.

On daytime soaps of old that is how that would have played out too, but today’s shows think they have to go so fast they have to jump over key elements like that. The writers of daytime today would have used McGarrett telling how his sister reacted and not showing us how she reacted. Instead they would want to focus on the main character giving them more and more screen time ad nauseum.

Daytime shows have 5 days a week to hit those high points in the story, to explore them and to play them out. Prime time has 1 show a week to do it. Prime time now does it so much better. In the scenes given to McGarrett’s sister I learned more about the characters in the McGarrett family in a short time and got such a better feeling of the family dynamic. It was well worth it. We need those scenes and even the minor characters. Things need to quit happening off screen and not everything has to involve screen time for who is perceived by the powers to be to have the biggest fan base. Just my opinion.
