On the Friday, October 2, 2026, episode of “Beyond the Gates,” some Duprees went to a tailgate party and found out Bill (Timon Kyle Durrett) had gotten tackled, “no” wasn’t an answer for Vanessa (Lauren Buglioli), and Elon (Malachi Malik) declared an emergency.

No Wheaties

Chelsea (RhonniRose Mantilla) went to Bill and demanded to know why he had dropped the attempted murder charges against Hayley. Bill claimed he had come close to death and therefore wasn’t feeling like pursuing revenge, but Chelsea wasn’t buying it – she was convinced that Hayley had something on Bill. Not wanting his daughter to traffic in conspiracy theories, Bill told Chelsea that she needed to respect his decisions whether she liked them or not.

Over at the country club, Dani finally explained to the shocked Andre (Sean Freeman) how Hayley had pulled a gun on her. Andre lamented Dani’s idea to break into Hayley’s house and said he would do anything to protect her. Dani promised Andre she was no longer “part of the cavalry” when it came to Bill now that he was out of danger, but Andre didn’t believe it.

The talk turned to Vanessa’s carjacking, and Andre, suspecting Heather, predicted Joey would take down whoever crossed him. Dani said she hadn’t seen Heather and didn’t think Heather was being given a fair shake because of who she was related to.

Anita (Tamara Tunie) and Vernon (Clifton Davis) hosted a Dupree–style tailgate party ahead of the homecoming game for Banneker University’s football team. Nicole (Daphnée Duplaix) told Anita that she didn’t think Vanessa had been the victim of a random attack, while Shanice (Ernestine Johnson) surprised everyone with her sports knowledge. At one point, Shanice and Ted (Keith D. Robinson) were left alone with Nicole and Kial (Greg Vaughan), prompting an awkward conversation which included a bottle of wine Ted and Nicole had given the Duprees for Christmas.

At Orphey Gene’s, Izaiah (Lami), as Banneker’s academic advisor, did his best to convince Eva (Ambyr Michelle) to attend the tailgate party with him. However, Eva didn’t want to endure a day of dirty looks from Kat and the Duprees, who looked down on her because Leslie had bailed Hayley out of jail. When Elon came by to pick up takeout, Eva convinced him to go with Izaiah instead. “Sorry not sorry, boo,” Eva grinned, and Izaiah told Eva he would put in the effort to get along with his father at the event.

In the back room of the Lakeview, Vanessa didn’t want Joey (Jon Lindstrom) blaming himself for her carjacking. She strongly suspected the attack was strategic and wanted to “hit back” so the person would learn she and Joey couldn’t be fooled. Joey wouldn’t reveal who was responsible, and when Vanessa deduced it had something to do with the restaurant Joey had been bilked out of, she told Joey she had researched the buyer: a company called Lachlaw Holdings.

“Enough!” Joey yelled, quickly apologizing for raising his voice. As he told Vanessa to let him handle things, Dani and Andre entered, and Dani took Vanessa aside for a private chat to see how she was doing after her ordeal. Andre asked Joey if Heather had victimized Vanessa because of the video he had in his possession, but Joey swore that he hadn’t shown it to anybody – and admitted that he owed Andre for saving Vanessa.

Despite that, Joey still insisted on dealing with Heather at his own pace, asking Andre to have some faith in him. Later, Joey called Heather (Ashley Jones), who had returned to London. Heather played dumb about Vanessa’s carjacking and denied any part in it, since she hadn’t even been in the U.S. when it happened. Joey warned Heather she had crossed a line, and Heather menacingly said that Joey was hurting her feelings. He replied that he would hurt more than that if Heather kept pushing him.

Same Team, No Games

Chelsea burst into the festivities wanting to talk to Dani, who hadn’t arrived yet. Vernon was floored when Chelsea relayed how Bill had declined to pursue charges against Hayley; becoming subdued, Vernon asked Chelsea not to tell anyone in the family (except for Kat, Naomi, and Jacob, who already knew) what Bill had done, for the sake of preserving the party.

However, Chelsea immediately blabbed to the arriving Izaiah, and Vernon told Ted, who wondered if Hayley had somehow found out about the cover-up involving the man Martin had killed. As soon as Dani and Andre arrived, Vernon took Dani aside for a chat, leaving Ted to fill Andre in on Bill’s actions. When Dani returned from talking with Vernon, she was visibly stunned and wouldn’t answer Andre’s questions, only expressing amazement at how one person could hurt so many people.

Pain In My Life

Elon paid a visit to Bill, who acknowledged that he had Jacob to thank for still being alive, since Jacob had confirmed that Bill was being poisoned. Bill tried to dodge Elon when the police chief revealed he knew Bill had dropped the charges against Hayley, sensing Hayley had used some kind of bargaining chip. Elon hoped Hayley didn’t know about the secret he, Bill, Vernon, Ted, Martin, Anita, and Joey were all hiding.

Bill confessed that Hayley had listened in on private conversations about that very subject and recorded some of them. Though she didn’t have the full story, he noted she knew enough to implicate everyone involved. To placate an alarmed Elon, Bill said Hayley was too greedy to risk not getting the money she’d been promised to keep her mouth shut, but Elon was more worried about how Joey would react when he found out Hayley was a loose cannon.

Queen’s Gambit

Vernon greeted Elon at the mansion, presuming he was there for the tailgate party. Elon said that was part of it, but more importantly, they had a “situation” on their hands. Vernon confirmed it, saying Dani had just told him what Hayley was holding over Bill’s head. Elon feared Hayley could expose them all and didn’t share Bill’s view that the problem was contained, not after Joey had gone rogue the last time their secret nearly got out.

Bill went to Joey, who was amazed Bill was alive after what Hayley had just put him through. When Bill cut through the joviality to let Joey know there was a problem, Joey became serious and said, “That better not be what it sounds like.”
