On the Thursday, September 24 episode of “Beyond the Gates,” Tomas (Alex Alegria) picked the wrong horse, Ted (Keith D. Robinson) saw something new in Leslie (Trisha Mann-Grant), and tests came back positive for Bill (Timon Kyle Durrett) in more than one way.
Love Yourz
Ted ran into Martin (Brandon Claybon), who was worried about Smitty’s confidence that The Impaler was setting him up to take the fall for Lia’s death. Martin explained how Smitty had been seen on an Uptown security video accepting a pouch that had been found in Lia’s cell. Ted agreed that didn’t look good, but he was sure Jacob would find tampering if it was to be found. Martin relayed that Vernon had hinted he would be fine if his political career ended, a possibility Martin still feared because of Smitty’s connection to Lia’s case.
After getting off a romantic phone call with Shanice, Ted turned to hear Leslie saying, “I remember when you used to talk to me that way.” Ted sighed that that had been decades ago and implored Leslie to put it in the past, since they had no future. He then asked her if she wanted something real. Leslie admitted that Marcel was very close to getting her to open her heart again, then wondered if Ted thought she could be a good woman. Ted felt there was one “in there somewhere” and underscored that the woman Leslie was becoming could certainly love and be loved.
Ain’t That Peculiar
Dani (Karla Mosley) and Naomi (Arielle Prepetit) had spent the night at the police station, where Naomi reminded Dani that they couldn’t prove Hayley had confessed to poisoning Bill, and that nothing could be done until the contents of the vial Hayley had hidden were analyzed. Naomi saw Tomas entering the station, with Tomas approaching Marcel (Darryl W. Handy) and making noise about his client being Bill Hamilton’s wife. Marcel was unimpressed but allowed Tomas to see Hayley.
Hayley complained to Tomas about how Dani had broken into her house. She claimed she’d had a gun since her mugging to make her feel safer and admitted that she hadn’t lowered it after discovering that her intruder was Dani. When Tomas asked what was in the vial the police had confiscated, Hayley insisted more than once that it was hand sanitizer. Later, Naomi warned the usually goal-oriented Tomas that he was risking his career by representing the woman accused of trying to kill his boss.
I Heard It Through The Grapevine
Finally coming home, Dani found Andre (Sean Freeman) asleep on the couch, gently waking him and confessing that she hadn’t stayed overnight at Naomi’s. She explained what had happened with Hayley pulling a gun on her and admitting to poisoning Bill; Andre could barely believe it. Meanwhile, Leslie found Anita (Tamara Tunie) and Vernon (Clifton Davis) at the country club and cackled over how she’d heard from Marcel that Dani had been at the station all night over something involving a gun.
“A gun?!” the Duprees yelped, clearly remembering how Dani had whipped one out at Bill’s wedding. They called Dani and left for her house without acknowledging Leslie. “You didn’t teach your boy no manners,” Leslie huffed to the portrait of Paul Cheeks Dupree, Vernon’s father. When her parents arrived, Dani told the whole story of what had happened with Hayley, adding that Bill had been hospitalized.
Vernon and Anita assumed that Dani would want to be the one to fill Bill in; Dani conceded that she should probably talk to Bill before Hayley did. Andre deemed that a smart move, and after Dani left, the Duprees became certain that Dani’s attention would no longer be divided, since the mystery of what had been making Bill sick would be solved. Once alone, Andre stared at his text exchange with Heather, seeming determined.
Truth Hurts
Jacob (Jibre Hordges) went to Bill’s hospital room and presented him with a search warrant – for his house and his blood. Bill balked at the order and fumed to learn that Dani had gotten into his home. Jacob brought up Hayley’s vial and the possibility that its contents had repeatedly made Bill ill, but Bill growled that Jacob was drawing his own conclusions and called the judge who had issued the warrant to try to have it nullified.
When Dani arrived, Bill wanted a good explanation as to why she had been nosing around his house. Dani went over how she had become suspicious after Bill had said Hayley had been plying him with liquids and making him, a heart patient, do cardio. Bill still thought it was nothing that Dani had found his $10 life insurance policy listing Hayley as its sole beneficiary, but his eyes widened when Dani relayed how Hayley had aimed a gun at her, perfectly willing to shoot her.
Bill couldn’t make sense of Hayley crowing that Bill “wouldn’t be around much longer,” or how she’d barely been prevented from getting rid of her bottle of poison. He lamented that he had given “that woman” everything in an effort to make her feel secure and couldn’t understand why Hayley would want him dead. “She never loved you,” Dani replied quietly. “You were only a means to an end.” Then, Madison came in with the news that ethylene glycol, a “stealth toxin” that they wouldn’t have known to test for, had been in Hayley’s vial. Bill remained certain he would test negative for it.
County Jail
Leslie came to the precinct with donuts for Marcel, but he suspected she’d really come to find out how her “new best friend,” Hayley, was doing. Though Leslie was sure that she and Hayley would be having lunch together at the country club later that day, Jacob received Bill’s blood test results from Madison. As Leslie watched, snacking on a donut, Jacob formally arrested Hayley for attempted murder — and an angry Bill walked in with Dani.
