On the Friday, August 14, 2026, episode of “Beyond the Gates,” the Duprees demanded to know what was motivating Dani (Karla Mosley), Noah (Nick Hagelin) got his first D.C. gig, and Andre (Sean Freeman) learned that his buried past had come back from the dead.
Third Degree? Dani Got the Fourth And Fifth Degrees
Knowing that her parents and sister inevitably had questions about her slip-up in calling Bill her husband, Dani invited them to the country club to let them have their say. As Anita (Tamara Tunie) deemed Dani doting on the hospitalized Bill reckless, Dani flashed back to having sex with him in the stalled elevator. Nicole (Daphnée Duplaix) worried that Dani was being drawn back toward Bill, with Vernon (Clifton Davis) acknowledging that Bill’s apology for his poor treatment of Dani had probably stirred up feelings.
After hearing her family’s concerns, Dani said they had nothing to worry about, but they weren’t convinced. Dani blamed her misnomer on the strained emotions of Bill being in surgery and Hayley getting in her face. Talk turned to the suspicion that Hayley was cheating on Bill, prompting Anita to yelp that Bill’s marriage was none of Dani’s business. Dani objected, feeling that Bill’s legacy would always be a reflection on their daughters, and she refused to let her loved ones make her wrong for protecting it.
Nice And Slow
Izaiah (Lami) brought Eva (Ambyr Michelle) to Orphey Gene’s, since she had been stuck so long in her apartment recovering from her liver transplant. Kat (Colby Nixon) strolled in, and though she wasn’t warm toward Eva, she wasn’t hostile, either. Eva listened as Kat hypothesized that Hayley had to have something to do with Bill’s condition, since his doctors still hadn’t been able to offer a proper diagnosis.
Eva was enjoying being out, while Izaiah wanted to know how Eva was doing since she’d allowed him to make love to her despite the scar that made her feel self-conscious. He was glad that she’d felt better with the lights off, but still wondered if she’d been “in her head.” Eva admitted she had been – at first – but Izaiah’s tenderness and attentiveness had eventually allowed her to lose herself. Izaiah hoped that they could build back up in tiny steps, like having a candle on next time. Eva consented, and Izaiah thanked her for trusting him.
Mr. Music
Noah was sitting on a bench in front of Uptown playing his guitar when Deanna (Angela Fairley) arrived, having answered his text. They went inside and talked about the books they had recommended to each other. Noah asked Deanna out on a second date, and when wait staff mentioned that there would be an open mic night the following evening, she suggested that Noah perform there.
At Joey’s (Jon Lindstrom) apartment, he wanted to get frisky with Vanessa (Lauren Buglioli), but she had a property showing to attend to. After a second appointment was canceled, she went to Uptown and found Deanna with Noah, who addressed her as “ma’am.” Vanessa laughed good-naturedly, and while Deanna signaled her mother to go away, Noah asked Vanessa to join them.
Vanessa and Noah learned how few degrees separated them: Vanessa’s best friend was dating Noah’s father, and Vanessa had ties to the clinic where Noah was now employed. Noah shyly accepted compliments about what Vanessa had heard regarding his noteworthy job performance, then picked up his guitar case and made a polite exit. Vanessa had nothing but good things to say about Deanna’s new beau, but Deanna became cold and monosyllabic.
It was only when Vanessa mentioned Noah’s music that Deanna perked up, and she seemed genuinely moved when Vanessa offered to come to the open mic to support him. Deanna invited Joey, yet tried not to react when Vanessa sighed that such events weren’t Joey’s speed.
Following My Intuition
Back at Orphey Gene’s, Chelsea entered, saw Eva and Izaiah, and gushed over their coupledom. Privately, Kat told her cousin that she and Eva had kept the peace, but she still didn’t want to talk about her. Instead, Chelsea expressed her worry that something worse than his heart stopping could befall Bill; Kat urged Chelsea to pay attention to her gut feelings, as she always had. Chelsea decided she was going to spend as much time with Bill as possible to keep an eye on him and didn’t care if Hayley protested.
Deanna joined the cousins and told them about Noah’s D.C. debut happening the next night at Uptown. She was glad her mother would be there, but she wanted him to have support beyond that. Kat and Chelsea promised to be there if their schedules allowed.
Where I Been
A jumpy Andre sat at Caffeine Fix, going over the mysterious texts he had gotten the night before at Uptown. He was startled when Smitty (Mike Manning) and Martin (Brandon Claybon) suddenly appeared, so much so that when Martin left with their drink orders, Smitty asked about the messages, since Andre had inquired about tracing them. Andre backtracked and said the texts were no big deal; Smitty wanted to know what Andre would do if Dani found out about them. Resolute, Andre said he would “pull out the bullhorn” and tell Dani everything about his past.
Martin returned and tried to recruit Andre into joining a charity basketball game. When Andre learned that the press would be there given Martin’s campaign, Andre passed on the opportunity, reminding his friends that, as a photographer, he preferred to be behind the camera rather than in front of it. Once alone again, Andre contacted someone named “Henry” and asked if a certain person was still “there.” He soon received a response that the person wasn’t—and that Andre should watch his back.
The Richardson-Smiths made their way to the country club and found the Duprees in conference, which Dani blew off. The conversation shifted to the basketball game and how Smitty didn’t have the skills for it; Nicole was glad that high school champion Kial would be playing alongside Martin. When it was revealed that Ted would be on the court as well, Dani joked that the team was all men in Nicole’s life and smirked that they should enlist Nicole’s ex-boyfriend Anthony from high school.
Back To The Hotel
Joey placed a call, ordering someone to “do it now.” Not long after, Heather (Ashley Jones) entered Joey’s pad, annoyed that his men had grabbed her and stuffed her into a car. In no mood for games, Joey commanded Heather to tell him what she had planned for Vanessa. Heather smirked that Joey might be afraid of Vanessa leaving him for her, but swore that she wasn’t positioning Vanessa as a pawn. Joey wanted to believe Heather’s assertion that she hoped to rebuild their sibling relationship, but he also knew how brutally violent The Impaler could be.
Heather waved away such talk as rumors and retorted that the only difference between herself and Joey was that she didn’t mind getting her hands bloody if need be, while he always had other people do his dirty work. They talked about their father, with Joey frowning that he and Heather would have been better off raised by wolves. Heather returned to saying she was thrilled about Joey’s romance with Vanessa, but Joey vowed, sister or not, he would kill Heather with his bare hands if anything she did caused Vanessa harm.
After Joey allowed Heather to leave, he called in a security guard and asked him to work with Randy to constantly surveil Heather. Meanwhile, Andre was just about to go into the banquet room at the country club when he received a text ordering him to meet at the Bowman Hotel, Room 1216, “NOW.” Andre turned on his heel and left, though Vernon was certain he had caught a glimpse of his son-in-law. Dani tried to call Andre and was confused when it went to voicemail.
Andre cautiously approached the hotel room and saw that its door was ajar. He stepped into the darkened space, looking around, when suddenly the light came on. Andre then found Heather in a chair cooing, “I thought you’d never get here.”
