On the Wednesday, August 12, 2026, episode of “Beyond the Gates,” Tomás (Alex Alegria) tried to play big dog but got bit, Samantha (Najah Jackson) ran interference for Tyrell (Jaden Lucas Miller), and Bill (Timon Kyle Durrett) got the most sensible advice from the most unlikely person.
Teach Them Well And Let Them Lead The Way
At the Richardson-Smith brownstone, Martin (Brandon Claybon) and Smitty (Mike Manning) surprised Tyrell with a party using Banneker University as its theme to show the heartbroken teen how much he had to look forward to at college. Samantha didn’t think the festiveness would break through Tyrell’s gloom, and she ran out when she got a text. Tyrell didn’t want to hear about how intertwined the Duprees were with Banneker regarding their related traditions. He still held out hope that he could reunite with Jessica.
Jessica (Camryn Jade) had asked to meet with Samantha, who was frosty. The college-bound girl asked how Tyrell was doing post-breakup, but Samantha didn’t think it was a good idea for Jessica to keep tabs on her ex or like anything he posted on social media—it gave Tyrell false hope, Samantha said. Jessica worried that the clean break Samantha was suggesting would tell Tyrell that she never cared about him, while Samantha was firm that Jessica hovering over Tyrell was making things worse. Having gotten the message, Jessica went home to pack in preparation for traveling to UCLA.
Smitty and Martin felt that Tyrell needed to focus on himself, but Tyrell had a separate fear: Without Jessica, he’d be reduced to being the chess nerd at college like he’d been in high school. His fathers described college as a reset and assured Tyrell that there would be plenty of opportunity to meet people there who would accept him. Tyrell was amused to learn that Smitty had gone through a goth phase at his age, and that Martin had dated girls – though Martin had dumped them out of fear they’d realize he was gay; he hadn’t had any better luck going out with boys, either.
Samantha returned and hugged Tyrell, who was starting to feel a little better. She promised her brother that he was bigger than one breakup and that he would certainly go on to do great things.
All You Can Eat
Kat (Colby Nixon), clad in sunglasses, snuck into Bill’s hospital room with the Orphey Gene’s baby back rib sandwich he had requested, as he was only being served bland, heart-healthy fare. When Kat compared Hayley’s devotion to Dani’s, Bill had to admit that Dani’s was unparalleled. Just then, Hayley (Marquita Goings) entered and made a stink about Kat’s food delivery.
Undaunted, Kat called Hayley Bill’s “Bratz Doll bride”, and the two became so heated that Bill demanded a time-out. Hayley thrust the to-go bag at Kat as she headed out, sniffing that the meal was stinking up the room. “Oh, girl,” Kat side-eyed, “your perfume handled that.” After Kat left, Hayley fumed about her lack of respect, but Bill sternly replied that respect was a two-way street. Hayley exclaimed that she’d only been thinking of Bill and began fussing over him, prompting Bill to frown that she could drop the act, since there wasn’t an audience in the room anymore.
Hayley seemed hurt, telling Bill that it felt as though his family members—and Dani—were beginning to succeed in turning him against her. When she pouted that he was pulling away, Bill backtracked and told Hayley that she meant the world to him. He was only hangry because of the “crap” the hospital had been feeding him.
Song Cry
Dani (Karla Mosley) and Andre (Sean Freeman) were picking through breakfast at the country club, neither very communicative. Andre finally admitted that he’d assumed that Dani would be at Bill’s bedside; Dani claimed that she had only spent time there for the sake of her daughters. Vanessa (Lauren Buglioli) came into the club with Joey (Jon Lindstrom), who was not looking forward to another round with any disapproving socialites. Instead, Vanessa led him to the Richardsons’ table and asked about Bill.
Andre got a call from Ted (Keith D. Robinson). Once he had some privacy, he complained to his uncle about Dani’s “doting wife energy” toward Bill. Ted wondered if Andre was worried that Dani was still in love with Bill. Andre returned to the table, and he said he had to go, which Dani barely noticed. Joey also decided the women wanted to talk and made himself scarce. After Dani glumly but sincerely conceded to Vanessa that she and Joey seemed to work as a couple after all, Vanessa wanted to address the tension between Dani and Andre.
Dani confided in Vanessa about accidentally calling Bill her husband at the hospital—which, thankfully, Andre hadn’t heard. Vanessa kept pressing, so Dani acknowledged how confused she had been. She knew Andre was her spouse, but in that moment she felt as if she were still married to Bill. Dani didn’t like it when Vanessa brought up her encounter with Bill in the elevator during the tornado; however, Vanessa was sure that it had reignited Dani’s feelings for her ex. Dani suddenly saw how her attention to Bill must look to Andre, and Vanessa managed to convince her that she had to put her present husband over her former one.
Hood Politics
Naomi (Arielle Prepetit) let herself into Bill’s office, which annoyed the arriving Tomás. The junior lawyer spat that Naomi was acting like the queen of the hill despite having her own law practice to tend to. When Tomás accused her of marking her territory, Naomi reminded him that her last name was also “on the damn door” and refused to let Tomás demean her. She wasn’t even there for work, she went on – she had come to deliver a gift basket to Caroline as a thank-you for saving Bill’s life.
Tomás felt foolish when Naomi noticed that he hadn’t even asked how Bill was doing. He apologized for coming in hot and said that Naomi’s presence made him feel like he was losing everything he had been working for. Naomi swore she wasn’t after Tomás’ job, and the two shook hands. Later, Caroline (Ellie Wang) was moved to receive the basket, and the conversation with Naomi turned to how Hayley didn’t seem like the person Caroline had become friends with anymore. Naomi remembered how she’d been lured herself before Hayley had turned on her.
Naomi then wanted Caroline’s take on Tomás, shocked when Caroline declared that Tomás couldn’t be trusted. In addition, Caroline pointed out, Tomás had been treating the assistants poorly ever since his promotion, which hadn’t given him the best reputation at the firm, and Bill had a blind spot when it came to Tomás, Caroline sighed.
Kat met Tomás at Orphey Gene’s and noticed his sour mood. He was still recovering from “Naomi reading my ass for filth” and hoped that perhaps Kat could persuade Naomi that he could handle the office by himself in Bill’s absence. Kat didn’t think it was fair that Tomás was trying to position her between him and her cousin, and she stressed that Naomi was going to do what she wanted, even if she had a talking-to.
And I Do Get Paid For Counseling
Kat visited the hospital and ended up giving Ted takeout that she had picked up for Bill, remarking that Hayley had pulled rank on her. Ted allowed that the food wasn’t the healthiest choice for a bedridden man, and when he asked how Bill’s family was reacting to his hospitalization, Kat described how Chelsea was freaking out, Naomi was “lawyering her anxiety,” and Dani… Ted didn’t need to be told what that meant, especially later, when Andre arrived, complaining that Dani’s focus on Bill made him feel like he didn’t matter.
On top of that, the Duprees had rallied around Dani to the point that they were acting like she was about to lose her husband, when he was standing right there. Ted could relate to his one-time in-laws closing ranks, which fueled his assertion that Andre “be a man” and put his foot down with Dani… and Bill.
Hayley was still griping about how exhausted Bill’s family made her feel when Joey paid a surprise visit to the room. Bill nearly ordered the hovering Hayley out so he and Joey could have a chat. Joey snarked that Bill’s close call had nearly put him “on the hook” owing to their gentleman’s agreement that one would take care of the other’s loved ones should tragedy strike.
Bill shrugged that he would be okay, but Joey noted that Bill’s repeated need for medical care was no longer coincidental. With Garland still unable to diagnose him, Joey advised that Bill seek a second opinion at another facility. Out by the nurses’ station, Joey found Hayley, who clearly hadn’t gone home, and let Hayley know that he was watching her.
Almost asleep, Bill awakened when a very serious Andre came into his room and planted himself at the end of Bill’s bed.
