THE NUMBERS

The week of September 13-17, 2021 marked the final week of the 2020-2021 television season. While most shows were either stable or slightly down week to week, ABC’s “General Hospital” was the standout performer in both week to week and year to year comparisons. Without preemptions or reruns factored into its ratings this week, the soap was daytime’s biggest gainer in all key categories. On the opposite side, the season premieres of CBS game shows “The Price is Right” and “Let’s Make a Deal” saw steep declines compared to the same week last year and talk show “The Talk” continues bleeding viewers despite changes to its panel, including the addition of two male co-hosts.

Entering its 12 season last week, “The Talk” remains daytime broadcast’s least watched and lowest rated series. “The Young and the Restless” dropped to fourth place in Women 18-49 rating and placed third in Women 25-54 rating, Households and Total Viewers, behind only the two half hours of “The Price is Right” in the latter three categories. The soap saw minor declines week to week while retaining positives year to year in Households and Total Viewers. “The View” lost the most viewers year to year, down nearly half a million compared to the same week last year while shedding audience week to week just two weeks into its landmark 25th season. All daytime shows saw erosion year to year in both Women 25-54 and Women 18-49 rating.

Overall, 2.389 million viewers watched a week filled with explosive cliffhangers. The soap was up +438,000 viewers week to week and up +362,000 viewers year to year. In the key sales demos, “GH” topped “The Bold and the Beautiful” for the first time since the week of December 21, 2020 in both Women 25-54 rating and in Women 18-49 rating.“GH” grew the most week to week in Women 25-54 rating, up +0.11 to place fourth.
