THE NUMBERS

Ratings for the week of September 6-10, 2021 saw all four soaps lose ground in Total Viewers, Women 25-54 and Women 18-49 rating compared to the prior week. With the exception of “Days of our Lives” and “General Hospital,” the Monday, September 6 original episodes of “The Bold and the Beautiful,” “GMA3: What You Need to Know” and “The Young and the Restless,” and the repeat airings of “The Talk” and “The View,” were excluded from each show’s weekly average.

Historically, “DAYS” airs originals on Labor Day and its performance is counted into its weekly average as was the case last week while “GH” typically airs reruns and is not rated by Nielsen, or the repeat airing is excluded from the show’s weekly average. That did not happen this year as the Labor Day repeat for “GH” was counted into the show’s weekly average and therefore brought its average down significantly in Total Viewers and the key sales demos, and resulted in the show attracting its lowest overall audience since the week of October 12, 2020.

With just 1.951 million viewers tuned in, “GH was down -169,000 viewers week to week and down -101,000 viewers year to year. Compared to the show’s performance in 2019, “GH” was down -151,000 viewers. In Women 25-54, “GH” averaged a 0.45 rating for the week and a 0.26 rating in Women 18-49. Compared to last week, “GH” was down -0.10 in Women 25-54 rating and -0.06 in Women 18-49 rating. The soap was down an even steeper -0.19 in Women 25-54 and -0.13 in Women 18-49 compared to the same week last year. When excluding the 0.20 rating in Women 25-54 and 0.13 rating Women 18-49 for the Labor Day repeat, “GH” would have averaged a 0.52 rating in Women 25-54 and a 0.29 rating in Women 18-49.

“DAYS” fell below 1.7 million viewers for the first time since July after a four-week hot streak. The soap averaged 1.659 million viewers for the week and averaged a 0.4 rating in Women 25-54 and a 0.27 rating in Women 18-49. In the latter demo, the soap beat out the overall performance of “GH,” the first half-hour of “Let’s Make a Deal,” “GMA3” and “The Talk.” “DAYS” was down -0.08 in Women 25-54 and down -0.06 in Women 18-49 rating compared to the same week last year. The soap was also down -111,000 viewers compared to the same week last year.

The Young and the Restless” was down week to week in Total Viewers but compared to the same week last year the soap continues to outperform in all categories. For the week, “Y&R” averaged 3.412 million viewers and a 2.3 household rating, up from a 2.1 household rating last year and +446,000 viewers. In the demos, “Y&R” was second in Women 25-54 with a 0.65 rating and third in Women 18-49 with a 0.40 rating. Compared to the same week last year, “Y&R” was flat year to year in Women 25-54 rating and up +0.01 in Women 18-49 rating.

The Bold and the Beautiful” was up slightly week to week in Women 18-49 rating (0.33 vs 0.32) but was down -0.04 in Women 25-54 rating. In Total Viewers, “B&B” was up +229,000 viewers year to year with 2.959 million viewers tuning in. Sadly, this marked the end of the show’s five-week hot streak with more than three million viewers watching the happenings in the fashion industry.

What follows is a breakdown of how the daytime shows performed for the week of September 6-10, 2021 in Women 25-54 rating, Women 18-49 rating, Households and Total Viewers. A closer look at the daytime soaps, including their daily performance in the demos, will be posted soon.

Note: “The Price is Right,” “Let’s Make a Deal,” and “The Talk” were all in reruns for the week. “The View” launched its 25th season on Tuesday, September 7.
