Good bump for all the soaps, especially for Days who was sliding in total viewers. I just need Days to hold steady til Ron/Sheri finally gets assemble. I’ll be curious to see what they’ll get for this 4 day week since it was centered around Sleeping Brady, crying Nicole, cold Chloe and St Daniel. Wednesday and Thursday episodes this week were some tough viewing days, but they might benefit who knows.

    • Mandy

LOL. “Sleeping Brady.” Thanks for the chuckle.

      • Soraya Montenegro

        you’re welcome 🙂

  • Keanna

Good to see Y&R and B&B up.

Surprised Days got a bump but I want to see this week’s ratings next week, because it was tough to watch.

That week for GH was the Nurses Ball so of course it would get a slight bump. But since only Wednesday got over a 2.0, and it’s still way down from last year isn’t caused for celebration.

  • Hedda Lettuce

Chloe commits suicide so once again Victor gets away with his evil crimes. Please Nick tell the police what you know about your father so Chloe’s family and friends can have some closure and The Moustache finally pays for what he has done.

    • Amie

Yeahh Its time that Victor to pay the price now.We know that Chloe aint dead.I felt for Kevin and Esther. That show its getting good now.Victor is going down

  • Salem Spectator

It was a pretty good week for the soaps. All but one gained viewers from last week in every category, but I’m sure Y&R will gain those lost 18-49 viewers back.

DOOL is the only soap to have a gain from last year in any category. I’m sure more gains are on their way.

Of all the categories losses from last year, DOOL lost the least.

GH losses in the demos from last year are 21/2 times that as DOOL in 18-49, 6 times that of DOOL in 18-34 an and almost 21/2 times that of DOOL in 25-54.

The 18,000 total viewers gained from last year for DOOL looks really good compared to the loss of 424,000 total viewers for GH. GH is going to have to try better to gain all those lost viewers.

Ron Carlivati’s material begins airing on DOOL next month. Goodness abounds!

    • Pat

Talk about putting lipstick on a pig and grasping at straws. No matter how you slice and dice these numbers, Days is still dead last in every key category. Yes, GH is in bad shape as well, but I wouldn’t take shots at it when your show is in even worse shape and staring straight at cancellation.

And honestly, I don’t get this fascination with Ron Carlivati, or as I call him “Re-Ron Cartooni”. To me, he’s the most highly overrated writer in daytime, and even worse he’s a smug egomaniac when responding via Twitter. He nearly drove GH straight into the ground with his ridiculous nonsense before he was fired, not even two years ago!! This just shows the desperation level Corday/Sony have to keep Days on the air. Yeah, let’s recycle a has-been burned out writer who just miserably failed on another soap! Great idea! (cue the sarcasm). It’s not surprising at all that this genre in this format is going the way of the dinosaur with terrible creative decisions like that.

      • soapguest

I sincerely wish Ron the best at this opportunity! May he write like he
did at OLTL…for the vets…lots of humor…lots of suspense…character over
plot. Lets hope he can rejuvenate DAYS! But if not…at least we know
he can write one hell of a finale!

        • Rodd

If DOOL goes under during Ron’s writing, he will be the one blamed and
not the people who’ve been in charge for years and made these constant
changes. The audiences like consistency in their writing and
characters. I hope the best for Ron and the show.

    • Ross

Days is somewhat getting better now, but with Ron it will be even better. Ron is a
smart man and I believe Days ratings will be way up. If I WERE Genie Francis, I would leave GH AND GO BACK TO Days as
      Diana Coville.

      • Pat

If “Re-Ron” is so smart, then explain why he’s no longer with GH. I thought he was supposed to be the savior of that show, so what happened? If you look up “overrated” in the dictionary, you’ll find his picture there. The man has no clue how to write consistently exciting stories that flesh out and develop characters over time. This move reeks of nothing but a desperate Hail Mary from the executives at NBC/Sony/Days to save the show. I’m so tired of unworthy retreads getting second, third, and even fourth chances to write for these soaps when there are undoubtedly younger, fresher, up-and-coming candidates out there who sadly are never given even one chance.

        • JayTN

I had actually forgotten about Carlivati’s nickname (well, one of them, at least)…Rerun Ron! Personally, I think Carlivati is very over-rated and likely has an over-inflated ego as a result (based on what others have said about him). I would hate to think that my series’ fate lay in Carlivati’s hands.

        • Maria

personally when Ron started on GH I loved him; later it didn’t seem like the same writer. The genre needs new people.

  • TruthSquad

Yay! A good week for all soaps. I was getting fed up with Y&R until the last 2 weeks. Now it is as good as it has been in a long time. 10 rock solid episodes in a row. Keep it up.

  • debbie45

Good week for all soaps! Great to see Days with increases this week! With Ron Carlivati as head writer, we’re in for a great ride this summer!! Keep watching and tune in folks!

    • Salem Spectator

The excitement is building! Ron is almost here! Sami, Will, Dr Rolf and Eve are on their way!

My popcorn machine is in good working order!

      • amanda

Many DAYS fans are very excited about the future of the
show. The storylines and all these great returns could be just what the show needs to land some
        higher ratings.

        • Pat

Gee, how many times have we heard this?? I lost count. And every time, the show has turned out to be awful again in no time. Every shred of trust has been lost between the showrunners and the many, many lost viewers of Days. Ken Corday has proven over and over again that he does not care one iota about longtime fans. The state of this show lands squarely at his feet. In this landscape, once viewers leave for even a few days, they rarely if ever come back, judging by the ratings.

          • SoapArmageddon

It’s not that Ken doesn’t care; it’s that he’s incompetent.

          • Suzy

Ken is incompetent AND he doesn’t care. It’s both. Every time he gives interview he shows he doesn’t know anything about his show and doesn’t care about the fans.

          • Salem Spectator

Many GH fans think Frank Valentini doesn’t care about the fans. It’s General Hospital, not Mob INC.

          • cab

That is true, but not only for Days. Has any other soap recovered from big losses. Days is the only one with miminmal losses compared to last year.

    • Pat

If this was a “good week for all soaps”, then this genre and these shows now have extremely low standards. This is what it’s come to- cheering wildly that Days barely inched back over a paltry 2 million viewers and barely nudged up a microscopic 5K in women 18-49’s when it dropped like a stone and crapped the bed for a handful of consecutive weeks before that. 315K in women 18-49 is downright embarrassing, point blank. It’s not going to drop EVERY SINGLE week, people! This is like fans of a baseball team going crazy after one narrow win, which followed 15 straight humiliating losses in a rotten season. Network executives don’t analyze ratings and ad revenue on a week-to-week basis like that. That’s not how the business works.

And to think that some Days fans actually think that the overrated Ron Carlivati is going to be the savior for the show, LOL!!! Wasn’t he supposed to be the savior for GH? Hmm, why was he available and no longer with the show? This clearly shows how much desperation surrounds this show. Here’s a thought- how about hiring an up-and-coming writer that actually has fresh ideas on how to bring this now-antiquated genre into the 2010s and beyond and how to appeal to people from this generation. Enough with the same old hacks! But that would make too much sense to actually happen.

      • paul

Yes if he was so good why is he not at GH anymore?

Its not like GH is doing well in the ratings either and they choose to fire him lets wait and see what happens in July and beyond and then judge if he any good or not than say he will save Days how many times i have heard this before.

        • Maria

why Ron is no longer at GH I believe has to do with a political thing. Someone in power over there didn’t like him, wouldn’t let him write the way he did at the beginning, and got rid of him. The current writers have been told that if they don’t bring up the ratings, they’re out. Can’t wait but if they bring in more lousy writers, what is the point?

      • cab

Anything is possible. Ron, + Allision, +Chandler= ratings. We will have to wait and see. With so many young fresh faced writers out there, why do the 4 last remaining soaps recycle their writers?

      • Maria

Ron did great on GH in the beginning, and then someone put the kabosh on his writing and he started writing junk. This is hardly an antiquated genre, since it’s a genre used on many nighttime shows, not to mention incredible Spanish soaps like Velvet. I agree and have been saying the daytime genre needs new writers, fresh writers, but it doesn’t happen. Writers and producers should be observing more why the Spanish soaps are so good. Velvet is fabulous and in fact is one of the top shows in the world.

  • FoxyRoxyy

Y&R had a disastrous May sweeps. Even this week they lost viewers in the most important demo. Sally Sussman really needs to be fired.

    • Amie

Enough with your comments.Y&R is finally up total of viewers now because of Chloes death. So leave Sally alone and stop bitching about her and enjoying the show

      • FoxyRoxyy

Look at the ratings. Sally is down in every category from last year when Pratt was writing. She has failed.

      • JayTN

Just block this person. I did and it’s a much better blog as a result. Nothing but the same old tired comments from this person.

        • jonboy

Help me out here. How do I block?

          • JayTN

Go to their Discus profile and select the three dots by their name. You can block or report a user this way.

  • JONNYSBRO

Sally Sussman has almost had 6 months and so far it hasnt been great. Really dull stuff its missing drama.

    • Amie

Let her do that job.Pratts are no longer there anymore and now Sally will do it fine.Yall complaining its not right. The show is getting good We still waiting for the return of Adam and Nick and Chelseas will be broke up when the secret about Christian comes out this year.So relax

    • robert

i was expecting more from her

  • Eileen

GH no doubt got a bump for the Nurses Ball (although I did not watch it; I hardly know anyone anymore). However, I read the spoilers for next week and they are once again headed to Sonny/Carly stuff; I expect they will go back down after that. Y&R was pretty good this week and last week; at least I am interested in several stories that seem to be progressing.

  • Elle L

I assumed the Nurse’s Ball would spike GH’s ratings much more than it did. They gained the least out of all 4 soaps and had 3 days in the 1.7 range. That 2.0 on Wed was the only thing that helped them a bit. The other soaps did well for the week, but it seems like no one can ever hold onto and build on their increases. :/

  • Amie

YAYYY Y&R is finally getting good this month thanks to Chloe.I felt bad for Kevin.Cane,Lily,Juilet,Billy and Phyliss is finally heating up with that drama.Im not into Bold and the Beautiful.

    • TruthSquad

I have been loving Y&R the last 2 weeks. Unable to get into B&B (Bad and Boring).

      • Amie

Yeah me too.Bold and the Beautiful is dragging Quin and Ridge that long.Im focus its on Y&R and GH now.

      • Kevin Little

I actually watched THREE (!!!) episodes of Y&R this week, that’s how much I was into it. It’s literally been 20 years since I’ve watched that many shows of this soap in a 5-day period.

The Chloe/Victor/Adam arc could be an entire hour everyday and I would be into it. Thumbs up, Y&R.

        • TruthSquad

SO glad to hear. I am enjoying it immensely also. I wasn’t a month ago. I hope they keep up the good work.

  • Salem Spectator

There might be a bidding war between Y&R and GH for Dena Higley. She writes a mean Jungle Madness.

    • Keanna

Y&R is doing fine and GH better not hire Dena, hated the original Jungle Madness storyline and next week looks really bad.

  • the nurses ball did some good…. glad some stories are wrapping up… you know morgan is coming back from the dead… so i don’t give af!! about ava and sonny and that hospital bs…. she’s not going anywhere.. maura is too good of an actress!! gh better not let her go!!

  • Mac888 spectral

It probably helps that a certain orange-haired parasite hasn’t been pre-empting our shows to talk about his diplomatic relations with the Dominos delivery driver.

  • Derrick

    Yayyyy for all soaps.
Liking Y&R with Chloe storyline and Dina’s being home. Something is going on with her and Graham.

  • KEE KEE

Stopped watching B&B, their gross. Brooke has slept with almost everyone on the show! Don’t watch Y&R as much anymore. Billy & Phyllis, just nasty! They must have the same writers. Both soaps have siblings sleeping with each others mates. A bit disgusting to me. GH may linger some of their storylines a little to long, but you don’t see that madness happening!

    • jonboy

Tend to agree with the breakups and makeups. When they are split let them stay split! Move on.

  • SoapArmageddon

Good news for a change, and even though I’ve only been watching Days very sporadically because it’s terrible, I’m glad the show is finally up compared to last year.

    • cab

I do not agree with you, to me it is exciting, and I like exciting. When Brady had his miracle take place, it was like over the top. What a soap was like in the old days.

      • SoapArmageddon

I welcome disagreement, but of course, I have the thousands of fans who have completely given up on the show and the fact that the people who wrote the episodes currently airing were unceremoniously fired on my side.

  • missmeka1987

What makes me excited about Ron is that he fits Days A show that was always over the top different and wacky than other soaps until Passions came along Ron clearly didn’t fit GH a soap that was never cartoonish I think YR got the right person They just need some action..BB is typical soap I miss Morgan Dewitt crazy character though

    • TV&MovieBuff

The problem is Days wasn’t always different and wacky and over the top. That is an impression folks got because of James C. Reilly but until he came along the show wasn’t any of that. All the way though the early 80s the show was written as a psycho sexual drama just like Young & the Restless. Then in the mid-80s, it was turned into a character driven romance action drama like GH with action, espionage type stories, but they were not filled with devil worship and all that. Even the very early James C. Reilly stories were different than what he ended up writing with the possession and the Kristen alter ego stories. His early stories were very character driven, typical soap opera stories with a action, espionage twist. The action was always secondary to what was happening to the characters. Then later Reilly changed and started going more for the shock and awe and cartoonish, and sadly that is what began to make the press. And that is what folks remember about Days and sadly about soap operas in general. And sadly those stories are why many didn’t take Days seriously for years.

    • jonboy

Good luck with that. I found his writing juvenile, quickly lost interest and gave up my GH habit.

  • FoxyRoxyy

Y&R credits: Special Appearance by Julie Chen as herself. Wow! The Julie Chen Show WILL replace Y&R. Mark my words.

    • TruthSquad

Let’s hope not. I think The Julie Chen Show would perform horribly. CBS would look a lot like NBC if they did that. Cheap talk shows with low ratings.

      • TruthSquad

On May 17th, the episode Julie Chen appeared on Y&R had it’s second lowest rating for the whole month ( 2.95/4,044,000). It was a bad week for Y&R but that takes away any arguement to replace the show with her. Julie Chen would be spending a lot of her husbands capital. Not to mention, I don’t think The Talk would do well without the Soap Opera lead-in. I for one like the show but only watch if I have been watching B&B.

        • FoxyRoxyy

I agree with you. The Talk is already below 300,000 women 18-49. But, Les does hate soaps and Y&R has not been performing well. It’s the #1 soap, but its a soap. Lots of actors, sets, crew. A talk show, while lower rated, has less cast, sets, crew. Financially, a cheaper to produce show could be more profitable than a soap. Les hates soaps.

          • TruthSquad

Let’s hope he doesn’t can Y&R. I have to admit that it not being renewed yet is a little odd.

        • JayTN

I don’t discredit the role that Y&R (and B&B to a lesser extent) plays in the success of CBS Daytime, but the crown jewel of the line-up (and the daypart as a whole) is “The Price Is Right”.

          • TruthSquad

I absolutely agree the Price is Right reigns supreme on the CBS daytime linup. My point was that Y&R is essential to the afternoon. I have a theory that even though daytime may not show the high returns it used to that the strength and diversity of their daytime lineup is why CBS usually has the most total viewers in primetime and do well in the demos.

          • JayTN

CBS is also very good at cross promotion. Despite what one thinks of “The Talk” co-hosts, Julie Chen has guested on Y&R, and Sheryl Underwood has done the same on Y&R (I believe) and B&B. They have also appeared, along with soap stars on “Price Is Right” and “Let’s Make a Deal”. Even the game shows have done the occasional cross promotion too. ABC is limited by having only one soap and fewer daytime hours than CBS. I think they’ve done a GH/”The Chew” cross-over, but that’s about it. NBC, which only has “Days” for its daytime line-up (and, technically, the last two hours of “Today”), is at an even worse advantage.

          • TruthSquad

I think in the case of CBS they have used their variety of programming very well. A successful double header of game shows and soaps followed by an entertainment news talk show to tie them all in. I actually think that even though The View is more political and gets slightly higher ratings than The Talk that as a utility for the network, The Talk serves a better purpose. As you mentioned, the cross promotion they do is pretty flawess in this day and age. Every show is part of a puzzle.

          • TV&MovieBuff

CBS’s current lineup harkens back nostalgically to the 70s to me when daytime shows worked together to promote the whole lineup. I think CBS was the first network to put their soap stars on game shows as guests and I think that was Match Game. The variety shows of the day constantly had daytime stars guesting on them. You got to the soap stars in ways you never got to see them on their shows. The Mike Douglas Show and Dinah esp. did this.

I think ABC would have been better served to have saved Match Game for their daytime lineup and used current daytime stars mixed with former stars and any current stars that wanted to guest. It would have been nice to see some of the soaps stars cutting up on this. It would have been a good pairing show for GH.

          • JayTN

ABC actually put out a press release a few weeks ago trumpeting that “The Chew” was #1 in certain female demographics. I think ABC made a mistake in turning over the 12:30pm half-hour to the affiliates when “Port Charles” was canceled back in 2003. They could have used that half-hour to launch a cheap-to-produce game show instead. It seems that ABC has admitted as much since they prefer those affiliates that air “Who Wants To Be a Millionaire?” (which is produced by ABC/Disney) do so at 12:30pm in order to compliment the rest of their daytime schedule. I also believe ABC erred in giving the 3:00pm hour back during the whole “Katie” talk show debacle…but that’s best left for another day.

      • jonboy

IMO Julie Chen is highly overrated as any type of host. On Big Brother she has proved time and again she sucks at ad libbing when one of the houseguests interrupts her scripted dialogue.

  • cab

I have always said that a soap is only as strong as its’ strongest character. When a major player dies in real life, the show starts a downward fall. Jeanne Cooper, Y&R, MacDonald Carey, Days, Douglas Watson, Another World, etc… and now Joseph Moscolo, Stepheno, Days. Add to that the continuing revolving door of actors who decide to pursue other venues, only to return when they find out how hard it is out there to find a career outside of the soap world. Have not seen what Jen(Teressa) has been doing since she left Days. Only a microscopic few actually succeed else where Then when given the opertunity they return to the show beinging brought back from the dead. Hope Will’s storyline is at least fathomable.
Wednesdays’ episode which had Brady’s heart stop, and then start beating was exceptional. Great acting from all involved, true soap opera form. Love my DAYS..

  • Dianne

Even the NFL’s Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguars win a game once in a while. That is the same when soap ratings go up. It is bound to happen some weeks. It’s the bigger case scenario that matters. I understand viewers are afraid their soaps may be done, but you have to live in reality and not be so naïve. YR for example has yet to be renewed. In January of 2014, it was given a 3 year renewal which should be almost up.

  • JayTN

While the numbers for “Days” are good, in the context that they didn’t lose any viewers from the previous week and are actually up year-to-year, the soap still kept up its record low streak in W18-49 and W18-34. This is actually the first week since April 3, 2017 (believe it or not) that “Days” went an entire week with all five episodes above the 2 million viewer mark.

    • soaprealityfan

You mean, while the numbers for Days are “good”…. wrong word got quotes around it lol.
To be honest, I don’t see how they could not have bumped up to 1.57… but this is very low by any measure. Also, we have at least our third straight week in a row with some daily numbers in the 1.4 range again. Some people will like to say different, just because Days has more numbers then last year at the same time, but that’s just because the show was doing quite poorly last year as well. None of this is something to celebrate. I still expect cancellation in 2018, or 2019 at the very latest. Days is a sinking ship.

Sad state of affairs when 1.57 for the week is now considered a good number for DAYS.

    • Dan O’Malley

Daytime soaps are a dying genre.

  • soaprealityfan

RE: RC coming in as writer at Days. There are no good soap writers left… just this sad generation of rotating insiders who aren’t good enough to be the interns of the previous greats (Bell, Nixon, et al.)

Will Y&R air overnight this Thursday due to the James Comey testimony during the day or will it be delayed until Friday?

    • TruthSquad

If they air overnight they will show the episode on POPTV at 7 also. I am guessing they will not show a current episode and therefore maybe a classic episode will air on POP.

      • Michael Taylor

The testimony should be airing now.

    • JayTN

I guess it depends on how long the testimony runs (coverage is slated to begin at 10am). If coverage pre-empts Y&R on the East Coast, I would expect CBS to substitute an encore episode for the other time zones and show Thursday’s regular episode on Friday.

    • jonboy

Chloes return from the dead is more believable than any Washington shenanigans.

    • JayTN

CBS returned to regular programming around 1:00pm EDT, so Y&R will air a new episode today (Thursday). If you miss it, you can watch it on the network’s website or on POP at 7:00pm.

I read an item regarding the possibility of Michael M returning as Adam on Inquisitr. The interesting part was a retweet from Eric B. who appears to follow Michael on social media.Apparently there wouldn’t be a problem if they were to work together again.Y&R should definitely bring back Adam.

    • Kevin Little

They’re never bringing back that sexual perv.

      • jesse

Something happened with Hunter King now I read it was a rumor. From the article Adam will come back with or without MM.

    • TruthSquad

I have read a few articles in the Inquisiter also over the last couple of months. It made me curious and excited (mostly over the return of the character, not so much the actor) so I went to MM’s Twitter page. He is definitely lobbying to come back. My hesitation to believe the article is that (a) they are still showing pictures of Justin Hartley’s Adam on Y&R as recently as last week (b) The article seems wishful and speculative. MM is my second favorite Adam. He clearly brings a lot to the show in terms of a fan base and I am sure the ratings would go up if he or Hartley were to return but who knows what goes on behind the scenes and what happened with Hunter King. I am wondering if an Adam return may occur but be brief with JH during his hiatus from This Is Us.

      • jesse

Same here excited about the return of Adam. What got my attention was I thought Eric didn’t like Michael for whatever happen with Hunter or anything else behind the scenes. The retweet was interesting to me.

Jean Passé, the Co-headwriter on GH, has announced she will no longer write for the Mickey Mouse Soap when her run ends in August.

    • JayTN

I hear that Dena Higley is available to replace her.

      • jesse

        LOL

      • Salem Spectator

She might be in a real hospital, in the psychiatric ward.

  • TV&MovieBuff

Well Ron C. is starting his tenure at Days like he did at GH. This is why I always ignore the stuff said about Jill Phelps when people say she comes in and hires her friends. All of them do it. Ron C. came on to GH and fired all the the writers who had been there for years and replaced them with his friends. Now the first thing he does and fires the oldest script writer Days has David Cherrill who has been praised by critics over the years not just for Days but other shows for the scripts he has written. He replaced him with some young writer he worked with on GH.

And I forget his name now but Sally has hired one of her friends as a script writer at Y&R. I remember some of his work from Days though and I wasn’t impressed.

Decisions like these just don’t give me any confidence in today’s writers at all.

    • Salem Spectator

The “young” writer hired as DC’s replacement is Andrea Archer Compton who started out at DOOL in 1998. She was a writer’s assistant and continuity coordinator. She was also a writer’s assistant at ‘Port Charles’ and an executive assistant to the president of ABC Daytime.

Her most recent position was script writer at GH, but it’s nice to know she has experience in a wide range of positions. She’s credible, not someone who just happened to work with Ron Carlivati.

  • TruthSquad

Shelia Carter is back on B&B. That was a pleasant surprise.

    • Salem Spectator

Why isn’t Gina Tognoni playing Sheila? The last time Sheila was on Y&R and looked like Phyllis played by the previous actress who is now on Mob INC. (GH).

      • TruthSquad

That’s funny. I actually thought the same thing. It is B&B after all. They do what they want. In this case I am glad.

  • Michael Taylor

I WANT THE RATINGS FROM LAST WEEK NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
