‘More Life to Live’: Fashion Report

Thursday, July 23, 2009 2:56 AM ET | By Scotty Gore

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — “One Life to Live” takes advantage of the popularity of their bi-monthly “More Life to Live” bonus scenes video clips, to take viewers behind the scenes of the popular ABC soap during the online segment’s off weeks. This week, Hillary B. Smith (Nora Hanen) chats with “OLTL’s” Daytime Emmy winning (and presently nominated) design team to see what’s hot in terms of summer fashions.

For nearly a month, the official “One Life to Live” page at abc.com has given fans the opportunity to view selected deleted scenes that wound up on the cutting room via the “More Life to Live” video feature every other week.

Due to the positive response of the bonus scenes, it appears that the brass at “OLTL” have decided to make “More Life to Live” a weekly online segment, with special behind-the-scenes interviews and sneak peaks airing in between the never-before-seen clips.

This week, “More Life to Live” presents a ‘style report,’ in which Hillary B. Smith discusses summer fashions with the “OLTL” design crew. First up in this endlessly mind-numbing video, Smith and Costume Designer Susan Gammie discusses what’s hot and what’s not with regards to scarves. Next, the actress speaks to Assistant Costume Designer David Brooks, who tells her that color to key to men’s fashion trends this summer, with regards to everything from shoes, to belts to sunglasses. Lastly, Associate Costume Designer Sally Lesser takes a look at what’s cool in women’s shoes, revealing that the higher the heel, the more fashionable it appears.

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — Creating the now-defunct ABC daytime drama “Ryan’s Hope” with Claire Labine in 1975, Mayer also served as the show’s co-head writer and executive producer (1975-81) for much of the soap’s nearly 14-year run.

Paul Avila Mayer passed away on July 10th, as the result of a brain tumor.

In addition to overseeing “Ryan’s Hope,” Mayer was also active elsewhere in the soap world. From 1970-71 he served as writer for “Where the Heart Is,” and as co-head writer from 1971-73; from 1973-75 he held the same position at “Love of Life.” After leaving “Ryan’s Hope,” Mayer served as a writer for “Search for Tomorrow” in 1985. In addition, he also wrote an adaptation of the popular play “Six Characters in Search of an Author” in 1976.

Mayer was nominated a total of ten times for Daytime Emmy Awards in the categories of Outstanding Writing and Daytime Drama for his work on “Ryan’s Hope,” winning eight times. Nominated every year between 1977 and 1984 (with the sole exception of 1982), Mayer’s wins came in 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1983, and 1984. He shared his first Emmy win Claire Labine and Mary Ryan Munisteri, and his first nomination with Labine and Robert Costello (who got his start in daytime as a producer for the cult soap “Dark Shadows”). Mayer’s 1977 and 1979 Emmy wins for his work as both producer and writer.

Premiering in 1975, “Ryan’s Hope” last aired in January 1989, after being cancelled by ABC due to low ratings.

Funeral services will be held on July 30th.

“Ryan’s Hope” airs weekdays on SOAPnet.  Check local listings.

Lindsay Hartley (SoapOperaNetwork.com) — Can chemistry strike twice for Lindsay Hartley (ex-Theresa Lopez-Fitzgerald, “Passions”) and Eric Martsolf (ex-Ethan Crane, “Passions”)? “Days of our Lives” seems to think so as the soap has hired Hartley to replace Felisha Terrell in the contract role of Arianna Hernandez, Brady Black’s (Martsolf) love interest on the soap.

According to Soap Opera Digest, Hartley begins filming on Thursday, July 23.

No word on what caused the soap to make the drastic change, but it is clear that the show is looking to recapture the magic of the “Passions” supercouple portrayed by Hartley and Martsolf for six years (Martsolf joined the cast as Ethan in 2002).

Hartley has a five-year-old daughter, Isabella Justice Hartley, with husband and former “Passions” co-star Justin Hartley (ex-Fox Crane). The actress recently appeared in an episode of the CBS primetime drama “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.”

Terrell joined the “DAYS” cast earlier this year, but got her break in the 2008 film “Get Smart” starring “The Office’s” Steve Carell.” She also appeared in an episode of HBO’s “Entourage.”

“Days of our Lives” airs Weekdays on NBC. Weeknights on SOAPnet. Check local listings.
