After first announcing development at the NBCUniversal Upfront presentation earlier this year, Peacock has ordered a new scripted television series based on the iconic “Fast & Furious” franchise, with the streaming service eyeing a 2028 premiere.
Franchise star and executive producer Vin Diesel will serve as executive producer alongside Sam Vincent (One Race), Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty (Original Film), Jeff Kirschenbaum and Chris Morgan, with Mike Daniels (“Sons of Anarchy,” “Shades of Blue,” “The Rockford Files”) and Wolfe Coleman (“Shades of Blue” and “911: Lone Star”) serving as co-showrunners and executive producers, and writers of the pilot episode.
“As you all know, we are very precious about these movies, but over the last decade, we’ve realized that the fans have wanted more; they wanted us to expand the legacy characters, their stories,” said Diesel at the NBCUniversal Upfront in May. “And for the last decade, the desire has been for us to enter the TV space.”
The first film in the franchise, “The Fast and the Furious,” celebrated its 25th anniversary in June with a rerelease in theaters by Universal Pictures. The cultural phenomenon and high-octane action thriller set amid the street-racing culture of Los Angeles starred Diesel as Dominic Toretto, the late Paul Walker as Brian O’Conner, Jordana Brewster (“As The World Turns”) as Mia, and Michelle Rodriguez as Letty.
Over 11 films, the franchise has stoked passion in an ever-expanding universe, earning more than $7 billion at the worldwide box office and has emerged as one of the studio’s most profitable and longest-running franchises.
Last month, Universal Studios Hollywood formally opened its new coaster ride, “Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift,” said to be the fastest in the Universal Destinations & Experiences portfolio, redefining the thrill-ride experience and “delivering an unprecedented surge of adrenaline.”
The next chapter in the film series, titled “Fast Forever,” is currently scheduled to race into theaters on Friday, March 17, 2028.
Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, is behind the TV-based series, with details on the story, casting, and further development still under wraps.
