On the Thursday, August 20, 2026, episode of “Beyond the Gates,” Izaiah (Lami) had a “Sliding Doors” moment, Kial’s clumsiness sparked a deep discussion with Nicole (Daphnée Duplaix), and Ted (Keith D. Robinson) and Leslie (Trisha Mann-Grant) separately thought back to their inflammatory beginnings.
Broken Dishes and Broken Marriages
Nicole and Kial (Greg Vaughan) finished up another romp in bed, then came downstairs reflecting on the impromptu open mic night Nicole had thrown for Noah. They realized that they had hosted their first event together – and that the living room needed cleaning up. As Kial did his part, he recalled how Noah and his brother Connor had once thrown a house party while he was out of town, which had resulted in a bikini jamming up the pump in the swimming pool.
As Nicole smirked that Vanessa didn’t need to know that detail about the boy her daughter was seeing, Kial accidentally broke a crystal dish, and Nicole reacted in horror. Catching herself, Nicole said the plate had been a wedding gift from Vernon’s cousin, and Kial understood that Nicole had spent her entire married life with Ted in the very house he now stood in.
Kial wondered what it had felt like for Nicole to have him fill the role Ted had ordinarily filled at parties. Nicole commented that it had been natural and easy; she’d just viewed the plate as a talisman of a time when she’d been able to rely on Ted. Kial admitted that he had a whole storage locker filled with his deceased wife’s belongings for their sons and reflected that there was beauty in such mementos.
Thieves In The Temple
Eva (Ambyr Michelle) grumbled to Izaiah that Leslie had turned down Marcel’s invitation to live with him on his boat, fearing her mother was backsliding into her obsession with Ted. Izaiah didn’t understand the dynamic between Ted and Leslie given their current relationship, so Eva reiterated Leslie’s frequent stories that the two had never felt like strangers, even at their first meeting.
Izaiah knew that Ted’s affair with Leslie had rained down destruction, but he was still glad it had happened, since it had produced Eva. Still feeling guilty for being the product of it, Eva conceded that there had been nothing “delulu” about Leslie’s feelings for Ted at first. Izaiah had his own reason to look back, as Dez, a fellow juvenile delinquent he had stolen cars with back in the day, had been denied parole for his latest crimes.
That had been the reason Izaiah had gone to see Joey, and he told Eva how Joey had stepped in after Izaiah and Dez had tried to rip off a car belonging to a guy with “a rap sheet a mile long.” Eva wondered what had made Joey encourage Izaiah to go straight; Izaiah still marveled that Joey, who had hired him, had seen enough potential in him to do so.
When Did You Stop Loving Me, When Did I Stop Loving You
Leslie took Marcel (Darryl W. Handy) back to her hotel for a nightcap, but Marcel groused that Leslie kept trying to be fancy when neither of them had come from that world. Becoming upset, Leslie spat that she wasn’t going to apologize for wanting more from her life and said she was tired of Marcel being a buzzkill. She ordered him to leave, and Marcel stomped out of the room.
Meanwhile, at the hospital, Bill (Timon Kyle Durrett) saw Ted in his doorway and frowned, not in the mood for any more lectures about Hayley. Ted eyed Bill’s monitor, indicating a heart rate spike, as Bill continued that Andre had given him grief as well, as if anyone could keep Dani from doing whatever she wanted. Ted promised he was just there to check on Bill, since they went back a long way, and Bill calmed down.
The men reflected on each having been married to Dupree women – and divorced from them. Bill cracked that they had lived “Bill and Ted’s excellent adventure,” though Ted made the distinction that Bill had left Dani, while Ted had been suddenly dumped by Nicole after Leslie had announced their affair at their anniversary party the year before. Bill wanted to know how Ted had gone from Nicole to Leslie; Ted remembered that Leslie had been kind, funny, lighthearted, and warm.
Down Low (Nobody Has To Know)
Leslie called room service, ordered up champagne, and knocked on Ted’s door. Getting no answer, Leslie left the bottle at his doorstep and began thinking back to when she’d first met him…
Dana (the name she went by then) was working behind the bar at her second job when she noticed a familiar face from her first job at a café on Phoenix Street. She remembered the man always ordered extra whipped cream and could see that he was down about something. He introduced himself as Ted, and Dana deduced he was having problems over a woman; Ted grumbled that losing a lady was a full-time job. As Dana listened to vagaries about his plight, Ted found her very insightful and asked if she was married. His job as a plastic surgeon led him to determine that Dana had perfect cheekbones.
Some time later, Ted brought Dana a teddy bear, since she had nicknamed him that at the end of their first meeting. Dana had just stopped short of smooching him as a thank-you when he leaned in and gave her a long kiss himself. Then, out together at a restaurant, Ted confided in Dana about Nicole having experienced several miscarriages and how she was barely communicative unless it had to do with potential solutions to their fertility issues. Ted wondered if he was sharing too much information; when she put her hand on his to reassure him that she was a friendly ear, he pulled it away uncomfortably. Dana agreed they would only be platonic.
After that, Ted sequestered himself in a hallway at the country club to call Dana and ask to see her. Bill arrived and overheard, reminding Ted that Vernon was just about to bring out a cake for the event all the Duprees were there to celebrate. Ted didn’t want to hear anything Bill had to say about his extramarital activities and took off, eventually making love to Dana for the first time and telling her that he loved her. She was the only woman he wanted to be with, Ted swore.
In the present day, Ted, at Garland Memorial, acknowledged that Bill had tried to warn him. Bill nodded that he’d hoped Ted would be the better man, since Bill had already had numerous affairs himself. Ted vowed to Bill that Shanice wasn’t a rebound, and when Ted asked about Bill’s marriage to Hayley, Bill replied that it was perfect, though he wasn’t particularly convincing. Despite Bill’s initial frosty greeting, he was glad Ted had stopped by.
Retrospective For Life
Marcel bellied up to the bar at Uptown, surprised to see Grayson (Jordi Vilasuso) there. Grayson pointed out that his new side hustle was a lot better than his old one and expressed his gratitude to “the boys in blue” for not throwing him in jail over his involvement in the Red Market ring. The least Grayson could do, he said, was listen to anything the clearly perturbed Marcel wanted to get off his chest.
Later, Leslie sauntered into Uptown herself, also stunned to see Grayson pouring drinks after she’d offered him the management position at the clinic. She taught him how to make a concoction she’d invented called Black Magic; Grayson was intrigued to learn that Leslie had also been a bartender. Leslie wistfully noted that the bar was a donut shop now, and Grayson asked her why she’d thrown him the lifeline of the job offer when she hadn’t even known him. She smiled that she had been in tough spots herself and just wanted to help someone out of one.
Suddenly, Ted, Eva, and Marcel all received phone calls and reacted with concern. Then, putting her phone away, Leslie made ready to leave Uptown; she was then seen at Eva’s place, lying on the couch and hugging the teddy bear Ted had once given her.
