Al Calderon, who recently exited “Days of our Lives” as Javi Hernandez, is set to make his debut on NBC’s “Brilliant Minds” as Nurse Nico Silva, beginning with the show’s Monday, October 20 episode, titled “Once Upon a Time in America.”
Inspired by the extraordinary life and work of world-famous author and physician Oliver Sacks, “Brilliant Minds” follows Dr. Oliver Wolf (Zachary Quinto), a revolutionary, larger-than-life neurologist and his team of interns as they explore the last great frontier – the human mind – while grappling with their own relationships and mental health.
As Nurse Silva, Calderon’s character is described as the Mayor of Bronx General. With his ability to run the hospital while looking good doing it, his warm, funny and outgoing charm may or may not be the reason why he knows everything about everyone at work.
According to an episode description released by the network, two patients arrive in critical condition, leaving Dr. Wolf and Dr. Josh Nichols (Teddy Sears) to do whatever it takes to keep them alive.
Ahead of Calderon’s first episode, NBC has released sneak peek photos of the actor working alongside his co-stars, including Quinto, Sears and Aury Krebs as Dr. Dana Dang, among others.
“Brilliant Minds” was created by Michael Grassi, who also serves as writer and executive producer. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman, Lee Toland Krieger, DeMane Davis, Melissa Aouate, Henrik Bastin, Jonathan Cavendish, Andy Serkis and Shefali Malhoutra also executive produce.
Berlanti Productions, Fabel Entertainment, The Imaginarium, Grassi Productions and Tavala produce in association with Warner Bros. Television and Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group.
“Brilliant Minds” airs at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT, following “The Voice.”

In addition to acting, the bilingual Calderon is also a singer and dancer whose work spans Broadway, television, and a growing slate of pop singles, including the recently released “Come Get It.” He made his New York stage debut in 2007 in “Radio City’s Christmas Spectacular.” A year later, he landed the role of “Eddie” in the original Broadway cast of “13: A New Musical.” By 2013, he gained national exposure as a Top 10 male finalist on the music competition series “The X Factor.” His other credits include the Snapchat original “Dead Girl’s Detective Agency.”
Although a spokesperson for the “Days of our Lives” previously stated to Soap Opera Network, “We do not comment on the contract status of our actors, but fans should not worry, ‘Javi’ is alive and well in Salem,” following news of Calderon joining the NBC primetime medical drama, Deadline later reported that the soap opera was seeking to recast his role.
No details on whether the daytime drama series had successfully recast the role. Meanwhile, Calderson is slated to continue airing through at least May 2026 due to the show’s advanced tape-to-air schedule.
