THE NUMBERS

Steve Burton’s return as Jason Morgan on “General Hospital” was a ratings winner for the ABC daytime drama series. The series attracted its largest overall audience in seven weeks (since the week of January 8-12, 2024), marking its fourth-best performance of the season among Total Viewers and tied its season high in Women 18-49 rating while exceeding its season average among viewers in the key Women 18-49 and Women 25-54 sales demos.

Averaging 2.168 million viewers during the week of March 4-8, 2024, “General Hospital” topped the first half-hour of “Let’s Make a Deal” (2.022 million) for the first time this season among Total Viewers and tied with the second half-hour in the unrounded Women 18-49 demo.

“General Hospital” also topped “The Bold and the Beautiful” (2.542 million) for the first time this season in unrounded Women 18-49 rating, while beating the CBS soap for just the second time this season in unrounded Women 25-54 rating. “The Bold and the Beautiful” hit a season low among Total Viewers, likely impacted by preemptions on the West Coast due to CBS’ continued coverage of the UEFA Champions League games.

“The View” (2.487 million) was also a standout performer for ABC. The talk show, attracting its best overall audience since the week of January 15-19, 2024, had its fourth-best performance of the season among Total Viewers.

“The Talk” saw double-digit increases in both Women 18-49 and Women 25-54 viewers compared to its performance one week earlier, despite not airing on Tuesday, March 5 or Wednesday, March 6 due to CBS Sports coverage of the UEFA Champions League games.

What follows is a breakdown of how the daytime broadcast shows performed during the week of March 4-8, 2024 in Women 18-49 (Rating and Viewers), Women 25-54 (Rating and Viewers), Households and Total Viewers, including a look at their performance during the comparable week in 2023, 2022, 2021 and 2020 (pre-pandemic), which provides readers with a clearer picture of how the shows are performing overall during a five-year period and/or the basis for an overall trend. The numbers above are calculated using Live+Same Day viewing and DVR playback, defined as 3:00 a.m.-3:00 a.m., and are courtesy of Nielsen. Household ratings are the percentage of TV homes in the U.S. tuned into television, each representing 1,250,000 homes as of the 2023-2024 television season.

Beginning August 31, 2020, national ratings include Out of Home (OOH) viewing. Previously, ratings did not include OOH viewing. Averages are based on regular telecasts.

Note*: Officially, the demo ratings are sorted by the rounded figures released by Nielsen. “NBC News Daily” 2022, 2021 and 2020 figures are compared to the performance of “Days of our Lives,” which moved to Peacock exclusively beginning September 12, 2022. “GMA3: What You Need to Know” 2020 (pre-pandemic) figures are compared to “GMA3: Strahan, Sara & Keke.”

Year-to-year comparisons (2024 vs. 2023) for most daytime broadcast shows among Households and Total Viewers will be unavailable for the foreseeable future because the figures were unavailable to Soap Opera Network during that period.
