The week of January 4-8, 2021 marked the first full week of all-new episodes of “The Talk” since the show was last in originals in mid-December, and it also marked the first week featuring new co-hosts Amanda Kloots and Elaine Welteroth who joined Sharon Osbourne, Sheryl Underwood and Carrie Ann Inaba in studio. Unfortunately, things didn’t turn out so well for the talker as it drew its third lowest rated week this season, and was down a steep 32% in Total Viewers, 29% in Women 18-49 Viewers and 25% in Women 25-54 Viewers compared to the same week last year, keeping the show in last place among all daytime broadcast shows.
Welcoming co-host Meghan McCain back to the panel, “The View” was up an astonishing 26% in Total Viewers, 20% in Women 18-49 Viewers and 21% in Women 25-54 Viewers compared to the comparable week a year-ago. The talk show was the third most watched daytime series behind only the two half hours of “The Price is Right.” Demographically, “The View” ranked third in both Women 18-49 Viewers and Women 25-54 Viewers, beating the first half-hour of “The Price is Right.” Only the second half-hour of “Price is Right” and “3rd Hour Today” had larger numbers in the demos. The chat show hit season highs in both viewers and demos.
Among the soaps, “The Bold and the Beautiful,” “Days of our Lives,” “General Hospital” and “The Young and the Restless” each aged up between 2-3% in Median Age compared to the same week last year. “GH” remained the youngest-skewing daytime scripted series with a 63.3 median age, followed by “DAYS” at 65.4, “B&B” at 66.6 and “Y&R” with the oldest skew at 67.0. Due to national preemptions that skewed its ratings for the week, “GH” faltered a bit in Total Viewers, airing just 181 minutes of content for the week out of its originally scheduled 300 minutes. “B&B” aired just 120 minutes out of its originally scheduled 150 minutes and “DAYS” aired 240 minutes out of its originally scheduled 300 minutes. “Y&R” was the only soap to air the majority of its episodes, despite preemptions. The show aired 270 minutes of content out of its originally scheduled 300 minutes.
Preemptions also impacted both half hours of “Let’s Make a Deal,” which airs at 3:00 p.m. ET in much of the country, “GMA3: What You Need to Know,” “The Talk,” “The Price is Right,” “3rd Hour Today” and “Today with Hoda & Jenna.” Ironically, both “Today” programs aired more minutes of content this year than a year-ago.
What follows is a breakdown of how the daytime soaps, game shows and talk shows performed during the week of January 4-8, 2021 in Total Viewers, Women 18-49 Viewers and Women 25-54 Viewers. The shows are ranked in order of Total Viewers.
