  • Michael Taylor

This was the week of the James Comey testimony. I wonder if Nielsen will count Thursday’s episode when the ratings are posted next week.

    • JayTN

Nielsen will count the viewers, but it will be up to the individual networks to count them or not. Each network is allowed a certain number of episodes to discount from the season-to-date averages.

NBC won’t be impacted, since “Days” wasn’t slated to air Thursday or Friday due to coverage of the French Open. GH wasn’t impacted except for perhaps during the second half hour due to breaking news. I don’t believe B&B was impacted while Y&R aired roughly half of its episode in the Eastern time zone.

      • AvalancheDog

This week, B&B was cut on Thursday (first 10 min) and Friday (last 10 minutes – no Sheila!) in MT – but not that many markets in our zone.

  • Salem Spectator

All things considered, DOOL did good.

B&B shattered it’s previous record low in 18-34 as well as 18-49! Maybe Sheila will help.

    • Soraya Montenegro

The only thing is about Sheila Carter returning I wonder how many people will care. I hope so! Because while in the past years if a legendary character returned to daytime you might get a sizeable gain til they left again. As you can see with Dina’s return, I like it because it’s a return I can appreciate and has history especially between she and Ashley, yet younger fans won’t care as much as we see by the demo ratings.

      • Michelle

The thing about Sheila returning is that a lot of viewers now, didn’t watch the first time she was on and don’t know who she is. And unless Rena Sofer is leaving the show, nothing will become of the Sheila and Quinn storyline. I for one, don’t care. I didn’t like it when she was on the first time. Her whole storyline was stupid as h*’ll. This time will be no different. Bell is really desperate. First, Spectra, now Sheila.

        • BoomBoomBoomerang!

No, Brad is bringing back characters and nodding to the past for 30th Anniversary of the show. Social media will educate younger viewers on why Shelia Carter matters. Social media lit up on Friday after reveal.

          • Michelle

Oh please. It won’t be what you think. Initial curiosity, yes, but long term, lol, no.

          • BoomBoomBoomerang!

I doubt Shelia would be long-term as a character. It’ll be what I think. I think I’ll just enjoy the show and what they do with Sheila’s return, enjoy the 30th and not take it so seriously. The ratings will uptick and we’ll see if they stick. But either way, I’ll enjoy it because I can see the alternative.

        • Soraya Montenegro

That’s what I’m saying. The 18-34 demo might not even know who the heck Sheila is or care to know! I even saw a few comments on Twitter “Like who is she” LOL… They are about to know!

          • soaprealityfan

Yes, but that demo is like 3% of a show’s entire viewership. On Days they have 2 million viewers with only 75,000 of those being in the 18-34 demo. It’s the same for all soaps in terms of them being mostly viewed by the older gen-x and baby boomers now.

    • paul

Really you think their ratings are good someone can i ask what you are smoking?

      • Father Time

        Him mean troll smoke pot

  • JayTN

Some short weeks pay off in the ratings and some short weeks don’t. This just happened to be a week when it didn’t pay off, at least for CBS. The network opted to air new episodes on Memorial Day, which were not counted in the weekly or season-to-date numbers, despite being the best day of the week for both soaps.

B&B would add about 50,000 viewers if Monday was included (a rough total of 3.25 million viewers) while Y&R would have added about 40,000 (for a rough total of 4.20 million viewers). Other parts of the CBS lineup also suffered, as “The Talk” had its least watched week of the season with 2.24 million viewers. Competitor “The View” on ABC had 2.60 million viewers, an increase of roughly 40,000 from the week before.

    • Richie

This also happened on another recent non-counting holiday, which also was the highest viewed day of the week. I do not understand their reasoning for not including those days, as long as they are new shows.

    • JONNYSBRO

Interesting the View is doing so well this season. I think the Trump effect and finally a panel thats gelling. If ABC is smart they will have the same panel untouched for next season.

      • Richie

If ABC was smart they would cancel that old hag gab fest. Esp. get rid of Joyless & Whoopie. Two hateful b*****s.

  • Salem Spectator

Only 62,000 separate the second and fourth ranked soaps in 18-49. When you say DOOL is in trouble, you should be saying all three of those soaps are in trouble and Y&R isn’t in good shape.

18-49 is where it’s at and according to those numbers the genre is in trouble.

    • crissy

      Excellent point!

  • Soraya Montenegro

These numbers are just oogly for BB. Brad pulling out the shock and awe of bringing back Sheila Carter couldn’t have come at a better time. He better write for her because in the past that’s when the show was at it’s best. If his summer move doesn’t work, I can only imagine what will happen with the Bold. This show is truly in the danger zone with demos like these.

Mal Young/SSM it might be time to go. Their brand of soap opera has caused negative ratings. Who knew that Pratt/JFP’s YR made kept viewers around.

GH was actually good last week. It’s been the more watchable soap with its own set of problems. I can say the same about Days. It has it’s issues but I hasn’t made me want to throw my tv out the window like the Bell soaps have.

  • Jeremy Bentz-Ashbaugh

Even though I have been enjoying Y&R lately, the ratings says the exact opposite. I think it may be time to cut ties with Mal and get a new co-writer for Sally or cut her, as well.

  • jesse

Days is horrible with the survivor/lost/gilligan’s island jungle madness(what an embrassment)I actually feel for the actors.Peter had it before JJ said so Higley ran out of ideas for mayhem and had to recycle a sickness s/l that is pathetic. If Y&R had a jungle madness s/l I would never watch again bc Bell has class.Irna Phillips and Ted/Betty Corday had it also they should have a star on the walk of fame not Ken.

    • Soraya Montenegro

I will agree Higley is a hack and she probably knew her time was on it’s way long before she started Jungle Madness 2.0. JM 1.0 wasn’t a bad storyline when Reilly wrote it back in the 90s plus Days had a far more superior budget (since they were the number 2 soap and battled YR weekly in the demos) to have these type of stories back then. Yet I don’t think JM 2.0 isn’t that bad, I do appreciate a good throwback history storyline, if done right. Where I disagree with Sharon on YR pushed someone down a volcano, LOL. Or the rest hack move SSM pulled with Chloe this week. They too have had their turkeys too and over the top plots/stories in the last 10 yrs. Plus one shouldn’t be quick to give YR too much promise. Their demos aren’t doing well under SSM/Young and they hardly ever do the type of stories Days or BB do. That’s why I say it’s time to get rid of SSM/Young once and for all or heck get rid of Young first.

      • jesse

Agree Y&R has had ridiculous s/l’s especially since LML.Idk who fired JFP/Pratt I still think it was the right decision.I think Mal has done a good job.Sally/Kay have changed the direction more character driven, not a lot of angst and drama. If another change comes it shouldn’t go back to the doppelganger, baby switching, made up illness Hilary had with JFP/Pratt.Demos are low bc US soaps(all 4) have limited subjects and recycling stories.

    • TruthSquad

I am patiently watching DOOL while I wait for the new material to air.

      • jesse

I like most of the actors on Days.Will/Sami can’t wait to see them again. It’s too bad the film schedule is 6 months.

        • TruthSquad

What’s odd is they have that 6 month taping schedule and also leak comings and goings so you often know who is leaving and arriving 5 months ahead of time. It takes away a lot of mystery. Still, I look forward to Will and Sami. It’s a shame Nicole couldn’t stick around.

      • Father Time

Paul is bug bite killer he kill them all it over. !

    • JayTN

Viewers have come to expect a certain campy-ness from “Days” and there’s nothing really wrong with it. However, their budget only makes these kinds of storylines worse. I’ve seen YouTube videos that look like they have a higher budget. Could “Days” make it anymore obvious that those “island jungle” scenes are filmed in a Hollywood studio?

  • BoomBoomBoomerang!

B&B just had a great week. Expect those ratings and demos to rise! Sheila is back! Viewers will be too! Brad Bell pulled out the most shocking cliffhanger of the year! Friday’s soap news lit up with breaking news all over about this shocker!!!

    • Pete Ra

Sheila was an awesome surprise! Kudos for B&B keeping that under wraps!

    • Michelle

B&B had a great week. Lol. Are you kidding. Look again. It’s summer, a lot of viewers are not going to waste time watching B&B, when they can be out enjoying the weather, Sheila or not, doesn’t matter.

      • BoomBoomBoomerang!

I meant “viewing-wise”, I didn’t say ratings! LOL We agree to disagree. Sheila Carter will be a big grab for B&B. Social media lit up yesterday after the cliffhanger. So we’ll see. 🙂

  • TruthSquad

Another great week of character driven drama at Y&R. IMO – 3 stellar weeks in a row. Hopefully the ratings will soon reflect that. At B&B – what can I say, They can go from 0 to 60 on a dime and the return of Kimberlin Brown as a seemingly free and legitimized spoil to Quinn is a game changer. Looking forward to next weeks numbers.

    • Martin

oh really? character driven writing on Y&R?? Have a look at the ratings again

      • TruthSquad

I wasn’t refering to the ratings Martin. I agree they are disappointing. IMO it takes a long time to regain viewers trust and those 600,000 viewers Pratt lost in the last 6 months of his tenure are stubborn. Hopefully they come back because I am sold on Sally’s abilities the last 3 weeks.

        • Martin

Sorry but IMO the last 3 weeks have shown what a terrible writer Sally is, she and Mal have done enough damage so it’s time for CBS/ Sony to get rid of them. Hopefully it happens soon

          • FoxyRoxyy

Hopefully! They’ve had more than enough time. How can they ignore a loss of 600,000 viewers in a year. It’s embarassing.

          • Martin

Yes ITA! What’s taking them so long?!

          • TruthSquad

Those are bad losses indeed but I fear a bunch of regime changes is a bad formula.

          • JayTN

I agree that constant turn over in the production offices or the writers room is never a good thing. Ever notice how “Days” boss Ken Corday seems to clean house around the time his soap comes up for renewal?

          • TruthSquad

It actually brings to mind a serious question about the general lifespan ofeach soap. It seems that they all kind of lose their way at a certain age. Sometimes by circumstances beyond anyones control. In Y&R’s case the loss of Bill Bell put the shows fate in less capable hands. IMO, continuity is Y&R’s best hope. I hope there is some patience.

          • TruthSquad

I respect your opinion. For me it couldn’t be better. Except for the ratings of course. 🙂

    • BoomBoomBoomerang!

Face-off between two super villains! It’s on! Expecting B&B will have a great summer!!!

      • TruthSquad

Can;t wait. The promo looks great.

        • BoomBoomBoomerang!

Agreed. I’m all over it. This will make my summer viewing of B&B so much more enjoyable. Reminds me of the days when there were more soaps and they were more fun! Love the promo!

          • TruthSquad

The promo seems to indicate she will be around for a while. I hope.

          • BoomBoomBoomerang!

I’d like for her to stick around well into the fall, at least. Hoping for a SL that has peaks and valleys and keeps viewer interest. Not gonna really like a super-short story arc that starts out strong and fizzles in 5 episodes. Too much of that in all the soaps. A good story that has staying power would be nice. Fingers crossed!

          • Richie

Hopefully she will take a little side trip to Genoa City to visit Scottie & Lauren. I’ve always loved my Shelia!!!

    • FoxyRoxyy

Character driven drama? A fake funeral and a coffin opening and a hand reaching out of it? The ratings reflect the poor quality of writing at Y&R. It has become a cartoon. I chuckle at the year to year losses for the show. Viewers have soundly rejected SSM’s writing and storylines.

      • TruthSquad

I expected to hear the riot act from you Foxy. The numbers are on your side but I personally have loved the last 3 weeks. I was hoping you may have been won over but I see not. 🙁

        • JayTN

To paraphrase Taylor Swift, complainers are going to complain.

        • jonboy

Blocking is akin to censorship, which I don’t promote so it was not without a lot of consideration that I finally blocked Roxy. My time here since has been much more enjoyable without his/her broken record. Do it.

    • Michelle

      Sheila won’t save B&B.

      • BoomBoomBoomerang!

Sheila Carter return equals ratings grab for Brad Bell & Co! I expect nothing less. Viewers were blown away. Monday will be good numbers for sure. Social media and lots of press after reveal (including interview with KB). We’ll just disagree on this and let the ratings tell the story in a few weeks.

        • Michelle

Okay. Lol. Yeah, the ratings will most definitely tell the story. It will take more than one character to save this show. Sheila can’t be on all five days a week.

          • BoomBoomBoomerang!

No soap needs any character on 5 days a week. That’s overkill. Who’s talking about saving the show? A 2.3 is better than most prime time shows. So again we must agree to disagree.

          • Michelle

Well, your posting like Sheila will become the savior of B & B. No comparison between daytime and primetime. Because if you did, B &B would have been cancelled years ago.

          • BoomBoomBoomerang!

I looked at my posts. Nothing about savior in them at all. So let’s just agree to disagree.

        • Karen

Alot of folks can’t stand Kimberlan Brown due to her Trump support so ratings will tell

          • TV&MovieBuff

Why do actors real life views and lifestyles have anything to do with the characters they play. I never can figure out why in the world people judge anyone on their personal opinions outside their shows and determine whether they like the characters they play or not. I get so tired of the judging from both liberals and conservatives on any matters of such type. To me things like that have no place in the world of entertainment. I watch TV and go to movies and buy music for entertainment — what an actor, actress or music artists believes or their stance on things matters as much to me as the thoughts of a fence post.

          • Richie

Her Trump support has only endeared me more to liking & supporting her.

          • Michelle

            Yeah, that’s funny..

        • Father Time

Me no like sheila worser then kirsten. !

        • Michelle

Temporary boost. Nothing long term. Sheila is just another recycled story, along with the Spectras. Desperation has set in.

      • TruthSquad

        I don’t think B&B needs saving.

        • Michelle

Oh yes it does. Look at the ratings since last Fall. No renewal has been announced. Why do you think Bell brought back the Spectras and Sheila Carter. The show is in free-fall. He is throwing sh*t up against the wall to see if it sticks. So far, nothing has. If B&B had good ratings, Spectra and Sheila wouldn’t be there.

          • TruthSquad

You are most certainly entitled to your opinion Michelle but I believe they are renewed through 2018?

          • Michelle

The only soap that has been renewed through 2018 is The Days of Our lives. CB S hasn’t announced their daytime lineup yet for the next season. If they did, it must have been today . I will be surprised if they do get renewed. One more season, tops.

          • ErrolLew

“The Bold and the Beautiful” has also been renewed through the 2017-18 television season.

          • Michael Taylor

            What about Y&R’s renewal?

      • soaprealityfan

NO ONE will “save B&B”. She will, however, be a boost.

  • robert

the return of Sheila could help B&B. i think it’s time for Y&R to make some changes, particularly with the writing, the show is boring and the stories are not good

    • soaprealityfan

i began watching B&B as of today, simply because of her return.

  • JONNYSBRO

Interesting even in JFP final days at YR last year she was 600000 higher in viewers and 200000 higher in demos. Cant even believe Jill ended so high. Its proving more and more Mal has tanked YR. The engaging drama is missing from the show. Its beyond dull, stuck in a time warp and is tanking. Could anyone see Mal Young being replaced soon?

    • FoxyRoxyy

Mal should have been replaced months ago. To constantly be down significantly in the demos has to be costing alot of advertising revenue.

      • Chad Graeber

Perhaps they will make Sally full executive producer as well as head writer if they get rid of Mal Young, or bring Ed Scott in to executive produce.

  • sherwood

Y&R is a dull hour now. Who honestly cares about the Cane Ashby character or his wife? Dina has been brought back, but she’s an unknown to most of the audience. Kevin & Chloe can’t carry a show. The newbies are a bore. Mal Young & Sally Sussman’s version of Y&

    • Salem Spectator

Maybe Sheila will visit Genoa City and help sort out the previous storyline while adding excitement.

    • Chad Graeber

Sherwood, THIS is what I don’t understand! The show is SO MUCH improved structurally and storyline-wise, and, for me, is much more compelling than it’s been in over a decade. I suppose as the audience ages and younger, more vocal viewers comment, its tolerance for character-driven, well-thought-out storytelling gives way to the desire for sensationalistic Crapp(Pratt)-tastic fare such as doppelgängers, towering infernos, and plane crashes in the snow, rather like the modern movie audience who would rather pay for cartoon characters and superheroes at the multiplex than maturely written dramas for adults that are thought-provoking. Mal and Sally’s YR is far from boring!! In fact, I’ve been on the edge of my seat the last two weeks with the Chloe/Victor storyline and the Jack/Dina/Ashley events unfolding. Because you don’t recognize a character from YR’s rich history does not negate their importance to drive good storyline for the canvas of characters who are already established. Sally and Kay have been wisely delving into the history of the show to bring new depth to those characters we love now (Jack/Ashley/Victor/Nikki/Jill/Nick/Sharon/Lauren/Michael/Abby/Victoria/Billy/Phyllis/Neil/Devon/Lily/Mariah/Hillary/Paul/Cricket) and to set them on new courses with Reid/Scott/Dina, etc. Don’t know what show you (and your complainers) have been watching, but it seems to come down to a matter of taste and an understanding of what classic soap telling is all about (a la Agnes Nixon, Douglas Marland, Bill Bell, Lorraine Broderick, Claire La one, Harding Lemay, etc.). Now, I agree with you on this… if the numbers don’t change anytime soon, then CBS will change hands. The question is how long they will be patient with quality over sensationalism. That may not be much longer, I hate to say! But I hope not, sincerely.

      • TruthSquad

Thank you for articulating your points so well. IA with everything you said.

        • Chad Graeber

Thanks, TruthSquad!! I appreciate your affirmation!!

      • jonboy

I dont know. Ive been jonesing to turn on my dvr every day I get home the past few weeks to view YnR. My only complaint is E Davidsons stringy hair. Cut that mop already!

        • Chad Graeber

          Hah! 😭!

  • Salem Spectator

Only 15,000 separate the second and fourth ranked soaps in 18-34, the second most important demo. As the viewers age, they will be upped to 18-49 and 18-49 will be upped to 25-54. There isn’t enough young viewers to sustain the soaps. 18-49 will become too old with hardly anyone to take it’s place.

    Trouble on top of trouble!

  • Father Time

Bug bite Paul Paul kill Sony !

  • Salem Spectator
    • crissy

Well it is definitely close to the end of the Ryan and Dena era..I’m hanging around to see what Ron has in store for all of us viewers.

  • Ann Marie Blon

GH still sucks. Does ABC really think everyone watches GH for Sonny and Carly and Morgan and his pills. I wonder if GH is going to put Morgan’s pills in the opening soon. Yes I know Morgan dead. Is GH really going to say that Ava was the only one to touch the pills

    • scott16475

Nathan Varni at ABC sure thinks that’s the reason.

I just feel the show should be spread the storylines and the airtime of the characters. TheIr’s a recurring character I want to see then once a month.

Does this mean Ron’s material begins this week as well?

      • Salem Spectator

Ron’s material begins next month, but it was said that he was able to make some changes concerning Anjelica.

Thanks for clearing that up! I am sure many will be tuning in.

From the pics that I’ve seen of the jungle madness on Days, the set looks like a really bad episode of The Land of the Lost. Wake me up when Chaca and the Sleestaks appear and maybe I’ll watch an episode.

  • scott16475

I stopped watching GH months ago due to the heavy hypocrisy of Sonny and those pro-Sonny characters in his orbit, but I’m seriously thinking of watching Bold.

Such good news to hear Eileen Davidson is returning to DOOL!

    • TruthSquad

First air date in November it looks like.

        I can’t wait to watch!

Why would an actress go from the highest to lowest daytime drama?

      • vanessa

She wants to work. She also is on a realty tv show. Nothing wrong with keeping busy and paying bills.

        • jonboy

Does this mean she is leaving YnR….or doing double duty?

          • vanessa

From what I read her return to Days won’t affect her role on the Y&R. Nor will it impact her gig on the reality tv show she is on. I am not sure how long she will be on Days.

      • Salem Spectator

        Because she loves the character(s).

  • soaprealityfan

Days is totally dreadful. I was so happy that there were no shows airing on June 8 and 9. As for B&B, news that Sheila just began airing on Friday has made me an INSTANT viewer of that soap again. It’s just THAT simple. Kimberlin Brown, with experience on NINE network soaps since the 1980s, is one of the most effective actresses to ever grace daytime television, regardless of whether she plays Sheila or not. This for me is absolute must-see TV. Like I said, it’s without question just that simple.

    • TruthSquad

Kimberlin Brown is great. She stepped right back into the role perfectly. I had been on a B&B vacation until a friend texted me that Sheila was back and like that so was I. It will be interesting to see what the ratings do.

BB is hitting all time lows for women because of Brooke marrying every relative, Caroline losing her full time gig because Brad gave her character a kid, Katie not being able to get another love interest even though she was betrayed in the worst possible way, etc. Only Brooke (not counting the younger generation) is allowed to have a man.
My point Sheila will not be making all that go away. Sheila is a desperation move.

More pre-emptions today. Something must be wrong with the soaps.

    • vanessa

Its been like this for months now. And i read that all these pre-emptions during the daytime are very highly rated (Ratings gold). For ex, Roughly 19.5 million Americans tuned in on Thursday (6/8) to watch the testimony.

      • JayTN

That is not exactly true. I have the viewership broken down by network (which I will post when the ratings for last week are posted here) and the numbers for the individual networks aren’t that far off from what they would normally be if they aired regular programming.

Also, these pre-emptions often don’t have commercial time, which means that the networks are actually losing money on them. They can’t air commercials, so the revenue from these (alleged) increases in ratings don’t benefit the broadcast networks any.

        • gjkl

For that particular date, ABC averaged 3.3 million viewers, just a smidge more than CBS, and NBC averaged 2.7 million.
