In an episode dropping Tuesday, “General Hospital” star Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos) sits down with Richard Taite, host of the “We’re Out of Time” podcast, to discuss a possible new love storyline and reflect on his legacy as a mental health advocate.
In one clip, Benard discusses his character’s chemistry with ADA Turner (Nazneen Contractor) and whether romance might be on the horizon between the two. Plus, he reflects on Sonny’s iconic past relationships —from Brenda to Carly — and shares his favorite piece of advice: “You gotta love the one you’re with.” Meanwhile, in another clip, he discusses his hopes for his legacy after three decades in daytime and the more than five years he’s been hosting his “State of Mind podcast.”
“I want my legacy to be: I was the first man to come out and say he was bipolar … I’m not the first [person], Patty Duke was way before me,” he says, noting, “It’s not about the acting. I know I’ve done well, but it’s the mental health.”
Recalling his appearance in a 2006 episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” where he revealed his bipolar disorder diagnosis, Benard says, “I was proud to do it, but nothing really happened with mental health from that, except I’ve seen a big change with the pandemic. That’s when it just blew up, because anybody who’s never had it and thought it was nothing, now has it, they’re like…this is what that is.” He says to Taite, “I think we’re in a better place, but I think suicides are up, and I hate to even say it because I know how you feel about it. I feel the same way.”
