On Sunday, February 18, CBS’ “The Young and the Restless” won Best Hairstyling for Daytime Television during “The 11th Annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Awards” at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. Hairstylists Lauren Mendoza, Justin Jackson, Michelle Corona and Diana Santana received the award for their work on the daytime drama series. Melissa Peterman hosted the awards show which honors members of the Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild (IATSE Local 706)

“The Bold and the Beautiful” and “The Young and the Restless” were also nominees in the Best Make-Up for Daytime Television category, but both shows lost out to “The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula,” with make-up artists Swanthula Boulet and Dracmorda Boulet taking home the award.

That said, there was a mix-up with the hairstylist and make-up categories as “The Young and the Restless” was initially announced as the winner for make-up, but the wrong envelope was given to presenters Kate Linder (“The Young and the Restless”) and John Brotherton (“One Life to Live,” “Fuller House”). Unfortunately, the make-up team at the soap made it all the way to the stage before things were cleared up (ala the Oscars moment). 

After correcting, the hairstyling team at “The Young and the Restless” took to the stage to receive their awards, with Lauren Mendoza speaking for the team, saying, “We’re truly like a big family. [The show] has been here for 50 years, and it’s a blessing to wake up and do this every day with the people that we love that turn into family.”

Other shows nominated in the hairstyling category were “The Big Nailed It Baking Challenge,” “The Bold and the Beautiful,” “The Kelly Clarkson Show” and “Snake Oil.”

“Dancing with the Stars” took home three awards, including Best Contemporary Make-Up for a Television Special, One Hour or More Live Program Series; Best Contemporary Hair Styling for a Television Special, One Hour or More Live Program Series; and Best Period and/or Character Hair Styling for a Television Special, One Hour or More Live Program Series.

Other TV winners included “The Crown,” “The Last of Us,” “The Morning Show,” “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story,” “Saturday Night Live,” “American Born Chinese” and “The Santa Clauses.” Among films, “Maestro,” “Saltburn,” “Barbie” and “The Idol” took top honors.

Additional presenters at the awards ceremony included LeVar Burton (“Reading Rainbow”), Marla Gibbs (“227,” “Days of our Lives”), Martin Short (“Only Murders in the Building”), Nyambi Nyambi (“Mike & Molly”), Tom Payne (“Walking Dead,” “Prodigal Son”), Karen Pittman (“The Morning Show,” “And Just Like That”), Andrea Savage (“I’m Sorry,” “VEEP”), Helena-Alexis Seymour (“Chronicles of Jessica Wu”) and Val Chmerkovskiy (“Dancing with the Stars”), among others. Chmerkovskiy also hosted the red carpet pre-show.

Michael Westmore (“Rocky,” “Star Trek,” et al), the father of “Passions” alum McKenzie Westmore (ex-Sheridan Crane), was bestowed with the Vanguard Award. Annette Bening received the Distinguished Artisan Award, while Kevin Haney (“Driving Miss Daisy,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”) and Ora T. Green (“Star Trek: Nemesis,” “Good Times”) received the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Bening could not attend due to contracting COVID, organizers noted, but long-distance swimmer Diane Nyad accepted on her behalf. Bening was honored for her consistent collaboration with Local 706 Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists and has richly enhanced and created memorable characters throughout her career.
