THE NUMBERS

The Price is Right” (3.881 million / 4.409 million), the second half-hour of “Let’s Make a Deal” (2.771 million) and “Days of our Lives” (1.757 million) were the standout performers for the week of May 16-20, 2022, according to newly released figures from Nielsen as they were the only daytime broadcast shows to see improvement among Total Viewers week to week. Overall, with the exception of “TODAY 3rd Hour” and “TODAY with Hoda & Jenna” whose year ago numbers were not available among Total Viewers, almost every daytime broadcast series was up year to year in the category and were mostly stable year to year in both Women 18-49 and Women 25-54 rating.

For the week, “The Bold and the Beautiful” (3.181 million) fell down to earth a bit from the prior week’s season-high, but the series still managed to attract its third-largest audience for the 2021-2022 television season and the third-largest overall since the week of April 20-24, 2020, the final week of originals aired pre-pandemic. The soap tied for second place in Women 18-49 with the first half-hour of “The Price is Right,” “The Young and the Restless” (3.503 million) and “TODAY 3rd Hour,” each with a 0.4 rating. In Women 25-54, the drama series tied for second place with its sister soap and the first half-hour of the CBS game show, each with a 0.7 rating, the same as last week.

Compared to the same week last year, “The Bold and the Beautiful” was up +529,000 viewers, the most of any daytime broadcast series among Total Viewers. Compared to its performance in 2020 when it aired its fourth week of classic episodes (reruns), the soap is up +1.455 million viewers, again the most of any daytime broadcast series.

The Young and the Restless” gained viewers compared to the same week last year, up +286,000 viewers and gained +1.379 million viewers over its comparable fourth week of classic episodes (reruns) in 2020.

General Hospital” (2.244 million) topped “The View” (2.193 million) among Total Viewers for the first time since the week of September 20-24, 2021, the first full week of the 2021-2022 television season, making it ABC’s most-watched daytime series for the week. Compared to the same week last year, the daytime drama was up +145,000 viewers and was up +74,000 viewers over its performance in 2020, which marked the show’s final week of pre-pandemic originals. “The View,” however, was down year to year (-95,000 viewers).

“Days of our Lives” was not only up week to week in Total Viewers (+11,000), the show was up +144,000 viewers over its performance during the same week last year. Noteworthy is how the show performed in Households. While it’s held a 1.2 for several weeks, its “6” share in the category is one the highest the show has experienced all season.

Notes: Viewing levels were hitting multi-year highs in 2020 during the initial shutdown of the country due to COVID-19. “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “The Young and the Restless” began their months-long era of classic episodes which continued through late July 2020 and early August 2020, respectively.

Comparable 2020 figures for “GMA3: What Need to Know” are based on the performance of “Pandemic: What You Need to Know.” The current iteration was rebranded effective June 2020.
