Former “Days of our Lives” star Charles Shaughnessy (ex-Shane Donovan/Drew Donovan) is joining the cast of “General Hospital” in an as yet-to-be-named contract role.

According to Soap Opera Digest, which first reported the news, Shaughnessy will first air on the daytime drama series in September. No additional information was shared.

Shaughnessy is probably best known to viewers for his portrayal as Broadway producer Maxwell Sheffield on “The Nanny.” The complete series is now available to stream anytime on HBO Max with clips released daily on the show’s YouTube page. He later reunited with co-star Fran Drescher in her sitcoms “Living with Fran” and “Happily Divorced.”

In addition to his dual roles on “DAYS,” where he played the characters off and on from 1984 through 2017, Shaughnessy’s other bought with daytime was playing Captain Elliot Sanders from 2010-2014 on “The Bay” and incidentally a role on “GH” in 1984 where he played the short-term role of Alistair Durban (aka Alistair Crawford).

With an extensive resume in TV and film, Shaughnessy has appeared in episodes of such shows as “The Magicians,” “Mad Men,” “Masters of Sex” and “NCIS,” among others.  Most recently he played King Edward in the “Christmas with a Prince” film series, including the upcoming threequel “The Royal Baby.” He also portrayed Prince Charles in the Lifetime movie  “Harry & Meghan: Becoming Royal.”
