While Guy Wilson is busy clearing up rampant rumors about his “Days of our Lives” status, onscreen love interest Freddie Smith (Sonny Kiriakis) meanwhile is gearing up for an emotional goodbye to Salem on the Tuesday, August 18 episode of the daytime drama series, which finds Sonny headed to Europe to take on a position working for his grandfather, Victor (John Aniston).
“As Freddie, I was genuinely sad, and so was the character,” notes Smith in an exit interview with Soap Opera Digest, on newsstands now, where he talks about his decision to not renew his contract with the soap. “As Sonny, I was saying good-bye to the people in his life, and I was saying farewell to people that I’ve worked with for four years. My life in Salem as Sonny, and my job at ‘DAYS’ melded together. It was very emotional.”
Although Smith currently has no plans to return to the “DAYS” canvas at this time, he notes that he hasn’t permanently crossed off a return down the road. “I’ll be back,” says Smith, who is currently in pre-production on a few films. “They’ll be going into production very soon, which is exciting. So I’m focusing on moving forward in life, finding new projects and growing as a person.”
Look for Sonny to share some of his final scenes with onscreen parents Wally Kurth (Justin Kiriakis) and Judi Evans (Adrienne Kiriakis), along with the aforementioned Wilson.
WHAT DO YOU THINK? With the character leaving town will you miss the actor portraying him, or just the presence of the character on the canvas? Would you be open to a recast?
