How WATCH ABC Changes Will Affect Viewing of ‘GH,’ ‘The View’ and ‘The Chew’; Shows Also on Hulu Plus

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — “General Hospital” is the only soap opera left on the ABC Daytime schedule and is also the longest running dramatic series in the networks history. Unfortunately, the soap is facing the same cancellation danger that its former network counterparts (“All My Children” and “One Life to Live”) faced just over a year ago before ABC officially announced the two would go off the air in a press release. Before any decision on the future of “GH” is ultimately made, the drama series is showing an uptick in key demos and viewership.

For the week of February 27 – March 2, 2012, “General Hospital” averaged 2.4 million viewers (highest since week of January 9, 2012), 657,000 Women 18-49 viewers (18-week high) and 871,000 Women 25-54 viewers (three-month high) per ratings details released today by Marc Berman of TV Media Insights. Compared to its performance during the week of February 20-24, 2012, “GH” increased its Women 18-49 performance by 59,000 viewers and retained a similar overall viewership total. By comparison, “The Revolution,” which hit its second most-watched week since its debut (week of January 16, 2012), averaged just 1.62 million viewers.

“The Revolution” is down 23 percent in total viewers, 27 percent in Women 25-54 rating, 38 percent in Women 18-49 rating and 40 percent in Women 18-34 rating compared to “One Life to Live’s” performance on the year-ago (week of February 28, 2011).

“The Chew” posted a 7-week high in Total Viewers (2.489 million – since week of 1/9/12), climbing by an impressive 11% over “All My Children’s” year-ago delivery (vs. 2.249 million), by 10% in Women 25-54 (1.1 rating vs. 1.0 rating) and tying in Women 18-34 (0.4 rating) and Women 18-49 (0.7 rating).

“General Hospital” recorded 18-week highs in Women 18-49 (657,000) and Women 25-54 (871,000), since the week of 10/24/11, a 13-week high in Women 18-34 (172,000 – since the week of 11/28/11) and a 7-week high in Total Viewers (2.403 million – since the week of 1/9/12).

“The Revolution” delivered its most-watched week in Women 25-54 (485,000 – tied debut week) and 2nd-most-watched week to date in Total Viewers (1.624 million) and Women 18-49 (351,000), behind only its premiere week, posting an impressive 4th consecutive week of gains in Total Viewers.

Moreover, Friday’s show was the series’ #2 telecast ever in Women 25-54 (531,000), while Wednesday’s show was its #4 telecast to date in Total Viewers (1.761 million).

Just before we post the dailies, which will provide a clearer picture of “One Life to Live’s” final week on television, ABC has revealed that the 43-year old soap ended its run as daytime’s 5th most watched program in total viewers (3,120,000), while ranking a strong second in Women 18-49 viewers (784,000) for the week of January 9-13, 2012. Only 94,000 Women 18-49 viewers separated “One Life to Live” from tying “The Young and the Restless” in that category. In Women 18-49 rating “OLTL” had a 1.2 compared to “Y&R’s” 1.4. The canceled ABC soap beat its former network and studio sibling “The View” in all key ratings categories except total viewers.

Compared to the same week last year (January 10-14, 2011) “One Life to Live” gained 439,000 total viewers (3,120,000 vs 2,681,000 viewers) and was up .2 in Women 18-49 rating (1.2 vs 1.0). In Women 18-49 viewers, the soap was up 149,000 (784,000 vs 635,000).

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — After scheduling conflicts reportedly kept her from reprising her signature role of housewife turned hooker Karen Wolek on “One Life to Live” in show’s final months on the air, Judith Light is finally coming back to Llanview…sort of. On Friday, January 13, just three hours before the final “One Life” episode airs, Light will set down on “The View” with several of her former co-stars to recall some of her fondest memories of the soap she called home from 1977-1983.

Also participating in the hour-long tribute to all things Llanview will be Erika Slezak (Viki), who will be co-hosting the show, as well as Robin Strasser (ex-Dorian), Kassie DePaiva (Blair), James DePaiva (ex-Max), Hillary B. Smith (Nora), Robert S. Woods (Bo), and “OLTL” creator Agnes Nixon.

According to a press release, “the show will also feature additional ‘surprise’ appearances; exclusive, never-before-seen footage of the final taping; never-before-seen interviews with some of the special guest stars and returning cast members; an exclusive sneak peek clip of the final broadcast of ‘One Life to Live;’ the last cast photograph, and a special video taped messages from past stars. A musical montage will showcase some of the show’s most memorable moments.”

In addition, the show’s audience for that episode, which will be taped on Thursday, January 12, will be composed solely of “One Life to Live” fans. (SoapOperaNetwork.com) — As in previous weeks, ratings for soaps are unavailable at press time but the numbers are out for talk shows including “The Chew,” “The Talk” and “The View.”

Per Marc Berman at TV Media Insights, ABC’s “The Chew” has reached its largest audiences since premiere week (week of September 26-30, 2011) in viewers while remaining flat in Women 25-54, Women 18-49 and Women 18-34 compared to its post premiere week averages.

Ratings for recently introduced ABC daytime talk show The Chew remained consistent from one week earlier, still trailing former occupant All My Children by noticeable proportions.  Based on the Live Plus Same Day data from Nielsen Media Research for the week of Oct. 17 (week four), The Chew averaged 1.94 million viewers, with no change demographically.  One year earlier, long-running scripted serial All My Children averaged 2.31 million viewers, with the demographic breakdown compared to The Chew as follows:

The Chew, of course, is cheaper to produce than All My Children, hence the programming change.  But sometimes the value of the audience is more important than the raw dollar figures, and the pending departure of One Life to Live for another talker, The Revolution, is also not likely to resonate in a daypart gutted with similar appeal programming.

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — As previously reported, ABC soap opera “General Hospital” will lose its coveted 3:00 PM ET/2:00 PM CT/PT timeslot beginning in September 2012 when the network hands the hour back to its local affiliates. The move will leave ABC’s daytime lineup with just three hours left to program with “The View” already secured in the 11:00 AM ET/10:00 AM CT/PT slot. New talk shows “The Chew” and “The Revolution” will go head-to-head with “General Hospital” when it comes to the almighty dollar (ie. which show brings in enough income relative to cost) in a battle for the remaining two hours (1:00 PM ET/12:00 PM CT/PT; 2:00 PM ET/1:00 PM CT/PT). In place of “GH” beginning in September 2012 will be the new Disney/ABC Domestic Television syndicated series “Katie,” hosted by journalist Katie Couric, which was just cleared in over 60% of the country just six weeks after the sales period began.

Janice Marinelli, President, Disney/ABC Domestic Television announced via press release that “Katie” has been sold to a number of station broadcast groups including Allbritton Communications, Belo Corporation, Cox Media Group, Gannett Broadcasting, Hearst Television, LIN Broadcasting, McGraw-Hill, Scripps Howard Broadcasting and Young Broadcasting. The talk show was most recently picked up by ABC affiliates WFAA Dallas, WCVB Boston, WSB Atlanta, WJLA Washington DC, WXYZ Detroit, KNXV Phoenix, and WFTS Tampa along with NBC affiliate KING Seattle, among others.

“To have garnered such exceptional clearances in this short period of time is attributable to the enduring strength of the Katie Couric brand and her wide-ranging appeal as one of the brightest, most talented and most dynamic personalities in the business,” commented Marinelli. “We are enormously pleased to partner with such a stellar group of stations across the country.”

Upon announcing the shows development back in June, Disney/ABC Domestic Television also announced that ABC’s Owned & Operated Stations Group encompassing New York’s WABC, Los Angeles’ KABC, Chicago’s WLS, Philadelphia’s WPVI, San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose”s KGO, Houston’s KTRK, Durham/Raleigh/Fayetteville’s WTVD and Fresno’s KFSN would immediately begin carrying the show at launch.

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — You may be asking yourself why in the world would we be doing a ratings reflection that highlights ABC’s canceled “All My Children” as ranking second in households (amongst all soaps) for the season when the show has already gone off the air with its last episode airing on Friday, September 23 and talk show “The Chew” already replacing the soap in its old timeslot. If I were to tell you that because ABC scheduled the series finale of “AMC” during the first week of the 2011-2012 television season that the soap would remain in the season-to-date rankings until September 2012, would you believe it? You better!

In the latest ratings released on Friday covering the week of October 3-7, 2011 and the season-to-date ratings of September 19 through October 7, 2011, ABC’s “All My Children” jumped from a 2.3 in households based on the previously reported Live+SD ratings to a 2.4 using newly released Live+7 ratings reflecting the soaps final week on television (week of September 19-23, 2011). In Women 18-49, “AMC” jumped from a 1.1 to a 1.2 rating and in Women 18-34 the soap jumped from a 0.6 to a 0.7 rating. The soap is tied for first in Women 18-34 with “Days of our Lives,” “The Price is Right 2,” “The Young and the Restless” and “The View.” “AMC” is second in Women 18-49 for the season just behind “Y&R,” which ranks first with a 1.4. In Women 25-54, “AMC” ranks second again behind “Y&R” with a 1.7 for “AMC” and a 1.8 for “Y&R.” In the original Live+SD numbers “AMC” ranked second with a 1.5, which shows the soap gained .3 when Live+7 was factored in.

With “All My Children” no longer a factor in the current daytime climate, for the week of October 3-7, 2011 CBS’ “The Young and the Restless” remained daytime’s most watched soap with 4.2 million viewers watching the daily antics in Genoa City. The soap has lost 15% of its audience (or 765,000 viewers) compared to its performance a year ago (week of October 4-8, 2010). Despite receiving more viewers than any series aired on The CW, including in the rarely reported Adults 18-49 demographic, and remaining the most watched daily serial, the soaps performance would place it in serious danger of cancellation if it were aired in primetime on any of the big four broadcast networks with the exception of maybe a Friday night airing on ABC, FOX or NBC. “The Bold and the Beautiful” by comparison has lost only 8% of its viewership compared to the same point last year (2.9 million vs 3.1 million). Overall CBS has lost 12% of its daytime viewership compared to last year (3.0 million vs 3.4 million). The network is down 8% in households (2.2 vs 2.4) and another 16% in Women 18-49 viewers (530,000 vs 631,000).

ABC is down 5% in households year-to-year (1.9 vs 2.0) and 9% in total viewers (2.5 million vs 2.7 million). The network is down a whopping 24% in both Women 18-49 and Women 25-54 viewers (541,000 vs 712,000 in Women 18-49 viewers; 714,000 vs 941,000 in Women 25-54 viewers) compared to its performance during the same week last year. ABC is down another 28% year-to-year in Women 18-34 viewers (163,000 Vs 225,000). With “All My Children” no longer in the mix, the network is losing ground in every ratings category with “General Hospital” losing as much as 30% or higher in a number of key demographics including a 50% drop in Women 18-34 rating and 51% in Women 18-34 viewers. “One Life to Live” has lost only 17% of its Women 18-34 (rating) audience and just 23% in actuals. “The View” is the sole bright spot for ABC with a gain of 10% in viewers (3.7 million vs 3.4 million) and another 12% gain in households (2.9 vs 2.6) compared to the year-ago.

NBC’s sole program during the daytime hours remains “Days of our Lives,” which is up 5% in viewers year-to-year and either flat or marginally down in most other categories.

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — “All My Children,” aired its series finale on Friday, September 23, 2011 with its largest weekly audience in over four years (since week of August 20, 2007), its largest single day episode in more than 4 1/2 years (since the May 11, 2007 episode) and tied its highest weekly household rating in four years (since week of September 24, 2007). The canceled ABC soap managed to place second in households for the first time in 16 years (since week of July 10, 1995) and placed second in viewers for the first time in nearly seven years (since week of December 6, 2004).

With an average of nearly 3 million viewers watching the final hours of their favorite Pine Valley citizens before the soap faded to black in a shocking cliffhanger ending, “AMC” pulled off a feat that not many soaps have been able to do, which was go out with a bang. According to Nielsen Media Research data, “All My Children” averaged 3.5 million viewers (3.475 in actuals) for its last episode which was its largest audience since its Friday, May 11, 2007 episode, where it also averaged 3.5 million viewers. In that episode Greenlee (Rebecca Budig Sabine Singh) interrupted Ryan (Cameron Mathison) and Annie’s (Melissa Claire Egan) wedding reception, while Krystal (Bobbie Eakes) took her new-born baby girl Jenny home for the first time and Colby tried to make amends with her father, while JR mourned the death of Dixie (Cady McClain) and Di (Kelli Giddish) learned some shocking news about Ava/Lily (Leven Rambin).

The last time “AMC” averaged a 1.1/7 in Women 18-49 was during the week of March 8, 2010, when 728,000 Women 18-49 viewers were tuned in. By comparison only 689,000 Women 18-49 viewers tuned in for the soaps finale week. The last time “All My Children” received a 2.6 household rating was on Thursday, July 26, 2007, which translated into 3.4 million total viewers. Meanwhile, the last time the soap managed a weekly audience of more than 3 million viewers was the week of August 20, 2007 when the soap averaged 3,020,000 viewers, which at the time was a loss of 120,000 viewers compared to the same week in 2006. The last time “All My Children” averaged a 2.3 in households for a given week was the week of September 24, 2007, the start of the 2007-2008 television season, in which 2.8 million viewers tuned in.

Sixteen years have gone by since we saw numbers like these, but it was also the last time “AMC” was the second most watched daytime soap. During the week of July 10, 1995, “All My Children” ranked second (only beyond “The Young and the Restless”) with a 5.7/18 household rating/share point. The last time the soap was second in total viewers, however, was during the week of December 6, 2004, when the soap averaged 3.9 million viewers and a 2.2/14 in Women 18-49. The week of January 17, 2005 was the last time “AMC” placed second in Women 18-49 viewers when it had a 2.2/12 rating/share and 1.4 million Women 18-49 viewers. During that week the soap averaged 3.9 million total eyeballs. Interestingly enough, “All My Children” took the #1 spot in Women 18-49 and Women 18-49 viewers during the February 2005 Sweeps period. Afterward, the soap never managed to place higher than 3rd in either category until the week of September 19-23, 2011, when it aired its last five episodes out of the more than 10,700 recorded.

Although ABC canceled “All My Children” along with “One Life to Live” on Thursday, April 14, both soaps were given a renewed sense of life when production company Prospect Park announced on Thursday, July 7 that they would resume production of both soaps as they transition to a new online television network, which was just named earlier this week as The Online Network or TOLN. Soap Opera Network wishes the cast and crew of “All My Children” the best of luck as they transition to the web beginning in January 2012.

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — This morning on “Good Morning America,” commentator and long-time “All My Children” cast-member Cameron Mathison (Ryan) announced that production company Prospect Park has officially started approaching the actors on his show with offers to continue on the new version of the 41-year old daytime drama that ends its run on network television on Friday, September 23. Mathison made it apparent that he is eager to commit to the show in whatever format it takes, but are his co-stars on board?

On the same day, Alicia Minshew, who joined the cast of “AMC” in 2002 as Kendall Hart, reported to the The Hollywood Reporter that she would not be able to commit to a contract run to continue as Erica Kane’s (played by daytime icon Susan Lucci) first-born if that was the only offer placed on the table from Prospect Park. The popular actress, who reportedly turned down an offer to star on one of the four remaining network daytime drama’s as of 2012, is open to remaining with “AMC” on recurring status. Like co-star Chrishelle Stause (Amanda), Minshew wants to spend some time dabbling in the different genres of television.

In the same report, the actress reports that as far as she has heard, at this point, the reports of Lucci declining Prospect Park’s offer to continue with “AMC” are accurate. Lucci, who has remained mum about her status with Prospect Park since the initial reports of negotiations falling out, may speak to the matter herself in the coming days. The superstar is scheduled to appear on “CBS Sunday Morning” on Sunday, September 18 to discuss “AMC” and she will co-host an “AMC” tribute on “The View” on Friday, September 23.



ABC

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — During the next week, ABC Daytime will take part in saying goodbye to “All My Children” which has been a part of their line-up since 1970. Following is details on the scheduled events which will include “Good Morning America” dedicating a special segment to the show and “The View” dedicating an entire airing to their former neighbors.

Weeks ago, on Twitter, “Dancing with the Stars” contestant J.R. Martinez (Brot) revealed to fans that Cameron Mathison was taping a special segment of ABC’s “Good Morning America” due to air soon. Today on Twitter, Mathison announced the segment is due to air tomorrow, Thursday, September 15. Look for Mathison to interact with other “AMC” cast members and take fans on a tour through 41-years of Pine Valley history. “Good Morning America” airs on ABC Daytime from 7:00 AM EST to 9:00 AM EST.

On Friday, September 23, “The View” will be co-hosted by daytime drama’s biggest star, “AMC’s” Susan Lucci (Erica), alongside regular co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Sherri Shepherd. Scheduled guests include “AMC” creator Agnes Nixon, and current stars Mathison, Debbie Morgan (Angie), Darnell Williams (Jesse) Vincent Irizarry (David), Rebecca Budig (Greenlee), Alicia Minshew (Kendall) and Thorsten Kaye (Zach). Expect some blasts from the Pine Valley past as well. It has been revealed that one of those blasts will be the on-screen reunion of one of the soaps premier supercouples: Kim Delaney and Laurence Lau’s Greg and Jenny. The tribute episode will include never-before-seen footage, interviews with the cast members who returned to pay tribute to the show and a sneak peek at the finale. “The View” airs on ABC Daytime from 11:00 AM EST to 12:00 PM EST. (Update: 9/19/2011)

As previously reported, Disney which is ABC’s parent company will also air a tribute to “AMC” on cable channel SOAPnet. The tribute consists of re-airings centered around Erica Kane and Pine Valley’s most romantic couples.

“AMC” last airs on the ABC network on Friday, September 23. The daytime drama was licensed by production company Prospect Park earlier this summer and is slated to begin airing on the internet, with new content, in 2012.



CBS

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — On September 26, “All My Children” will be replaced on ABC Daytime by a lifestyle program – with a focus on food – titled (arguably in poor taste) “The Chew.” Early this morning, Entertainment Weekly revealed that CBS Daytime reached out to several actors from the cancelled ABC drama to assist them in some interesting counter-programming beginning on September 26.

During the week of September 26, Jacob Young, Michael E. Knight and Ricky Paull Goldin will make appearances on “The Talk” for interviews about the end of “AMC” and to share their favorite recipes in a segment titled “All My Meals.” Young will appear on the Monday, September 26 installment of the talk-show. He also makes his return to CBS’ “The Bold and the Beautiful” as Rick Forrester the same day. Knight will appear on the Wednesday, September 28 installment. Goldin will follow on Thursday, September 29.

“The Talk” was created by Sara Gilbert and debuted on October 18, 2010 on CBS Daytime replacing another cancelled daytime drama, “As the World Turns.” In its second season, the talk-show which strongly resemble ABC Daytime’s “The View,” is currently hosted by Gilbert, Julie Chen, and Sharon Osbourne. “The Talk” is currently rotating guest hosts and in talks with personalities to fill former hosts Holly Robinson Peete and Leah Remini’s seats.
