Greg Vaughan (SoapOperaNetwork.com) — The talk of the “General Hospital” Fan Club Weekend wasn’t what is going to happen next on the ABC soap, but news that Greg Vaughan, who portrays Lucky Spencer, is expecting his second child with wife Touriya Haoud. The couples first child, Jathan James Vaughan, was born in May 2007. The actor tweeted the happy news on Monday, July 20.

“As I lay in bed, adoring my beautiful family! My son slowly closes his eyes, & my beautiful wife caresses her belly as new life is blooming,” said Vaughan.

Reportedly, Haoud is three months pregnant, which marks her delivery date at or about January 2010.

Prior to joining the cast of “General Hospital” in 2003, Vaughan portrayed the contract role of Diego Guttierez on CBS’ “The Young and the Restless.” He has also appeared in a number of primetime dramas including The WB’s “Buffy, The Vampire Slayer” and “Charmed,” and FOX’s “Beverly Hills, 90210.” He has also tried his hand at comedy with his appearances in “Sabrina, The Teenage Witch” and “Still Standing.”

In related baby news, “GH’s” Tyler Christopher (Nikolas Cassadine) is expecting his first child, a boy, with wife Brienne Pedigo in October. Pedigo is a reporter for ESPN.

“General Hospital” airs Weekdays on ABC. Weeknights on SOAPnet. Check local listings.

Alicia Minshew (SoapOperaNetwork.com) — Alicia Minshew, who portrays Kendall Hart Slater on ABC’s “All My Children” is expecting her first child with husband& Richie Herschenfeld. Their daughter is due in November.

“Richie and I are so thrilled,” said Minshew in a statement to Soap Opera Digest magazine. “I can’t wait to be a mom!” Minshew’s pregnancy is not expected to be written into the show as Kendall is currently involved in a murder mystery storyline and the show has no plans to change course at this time.

Alicia joined the cast of “All My Children” in 2002 as Kendall Hart, Erica Kane’s (Susan Lucci) daughter after a childhood rape. In 2009, the actress received her first Daytime Emmy Award Nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in Drama Series in May for her work on the soap.

Drew Cheetwood (SoapOperaNetwork.com) — Drew Cheetwood, 26, portrays Milo Giambetti on ABC’s “General Hospital,” but did you know that he is also the personal trainer for Robert Guza, Jr., the soaps head writer, and much of the cast and crew of the soap?

Cheetwood is the younger brother of Derk Cheetwood (Max Giambetti, “General Hospital”) and is cousins with Tyler Christopher (Nikolas Cassadine, “General Hospital”), but he didn’t get the job as Milo because of them. He got it because the show was interested in filling a role as one of Sonny Corinthos’ (Maurice Benard) bodyguards. Since he’s always on set helping the talent and crew get in shape, it was only a natural choice to seek Drew out for the role. But which career does he prefer? “Acting for sure. I moved out to LA to be an actor.”

While “General Hospital” has provided Drew with his big break, he is still looking for that one role that will make him a star. “I’m getting offered stuff, which is fortunate. That’s what I’m doing now,” he said, though he couldn’t be more specific on what those things were.

When Drew’s not acting, he’s in full-on Personal Trainer mode. “When I was little Steve Burton and Derk used to pick on me. They used to give me noogies and put me in headlocks. [But] when they come into my domain, they are mine,” he says. “The tables have turned. When Steve shows up, watch. I will make him go down and do push ups. I’ll just say, ‘Steve it’s time.”‘ In case you were wondering, Drew does have personalized workouts set up for the actors, it just “depends on what they are going for,” says Cheetwood. “Most of the guys want to look in shape.”

As far as the Social Networking world is concerned, Drew is only familiar with MySpace. “I did MySpace, which I think is so 2007 – it’s now Facebook and Twitter. With my schedule, I can’t really get back to people as I should.”

Lisa LoCicero (SoapOperaNetwork.com) — The event was free and you paid for your own food, but it was one of the best events I’ve ever been to at the “General Hospital” Fan Club Weekend. Which event am I talking about? Lisa LoCicero’s.

Brunch with Lisa LoCicero was a wonderful experience. The event wasn’t overcrowded as only a limited number of people could attend. Lisa was able to have full-on conversations with her fans in addition to taking photos and signing autographs. She even had time to sit down and eat herself. Which event can you honestly say you’ve had the same experience?

Soaps in Depth magazine is here covering Lisa’s event as well and according to their conversation with Lisa, Jolivia (Johnny and Olivia) fans can expect some hot make out scenes between the duo in the near future. “Wait ’til you see it!”

Jim Warren is also here and despite what many of you think, he’s actually a nice guy. He took group shots of Lisa with all of her fans, so look out for that pic to hit the net in a couple of weeks.

After the Jim Warren shoot, Lisa gathered her fans together in a big circle for a Q&A session. She answered questions about her scenes with Brandon Barash (Johnny) and Maurice Benard (Sonny). For reference, she’ll be having some nice scenes with Johnny next week, in addition to her upcoming make out session. Lisa noted that often than not the actors will hide their scripts behind a pillow while they are in between takes, so if you see a character sitting down on a couch in an episode, it is likely the actor has their script lying around close to them.

Lisa is a supporter of a potential Claudia/Dante pairing as she’s seen the chemistry that Sarah Brown (Claudia) and Dominic Zamprogna (Dante) share. I’d have to agree with Lisa as Claudia will be losing her baby next week after learning that Sonny is really the father. With Ric (Rick Hearst) no longer on the show, it is about time Claudia got a man that is willing to sex her up and play against her strengths and weaknesses without being kept in the dark for a change. Though Dante will have his work cut out for him as Claudia will seek revenge on those who’ve wronged her. Watch out Port Charles.

Have any of you ever thought that Lisa seems to resemble Sandra Bullock (“The Proposal”) and Vanessa Marcil (ex-Brenda, “GH”) just a little? Apparently you aren’t the only one. Lisa heard from her agent that the show was contemplating having her come in as a Brenda recast, but Lisa made it clear that those were “shoes [I] wasn’t willing to fill.” As for Sandra, Lisa noted that a classmate of her son’s told her that “you look like a lady from a commercial I saw from a movie. You have to marry me.”

My thanks goes out to Michelle Bell, Shelley Brown, Angelina Herrera, and Jen Brown at Lisa LoCicero Online, who organized the event and made the experience one to remember.

Megan Ward (SoapOperaNetwork.com) — After the Thursday, July 16 airing of ABC’s “General Hospital,” rumors began flying that Megan Ward, who portrays Kate Howard on the soap, is done filming. Not true says a “General Hospital” spokesman.

“It was not Megan’s last day. You will see her again.”

Nearly two years since joining the cast of “GH,” Ward was bumped to recurring status in April 2009 along with Rick Hearst (ex-Ric Lansing), who recently jumped ship to CBS’ “The Bold and the Beautiful” when the soap offered him a contract in order to retun to the soap as Whipple ‘Whip’ Jones III.

Ward is best known for her roles in such primetime series as FOX’s “Party of Five” and “Melrose Place” and the series “Dark Skies.” She can next be seen in the film “The Invited” due out this year. The film also stars Victor Browne (ex-Drew Buchanan, “One Life to Live”) and Lou Diamond Phillips.

Airtel Plaza Hotel (SoapOperaNetwork.com) — So you’ve been coming to “General Hospital” Fan Club Weekend at the Sportsmen’s Lodge for years and are leery of change. You’re not sure what a new venue will be like and feel this may be your last year attending the biggest soap fan weekend in the world. I have a question to ask? What’s to worry about?

Like many of you, I’ve been coming to the “GH” Fan Club Weekend for years. This will be my fourth year. When it was announced during the 2008 Fan gathering that it would be our last at the Sportsmen’s due to the lodge’s then impending closure, many of us thought the event itself was over. With the hard work and dedication of Debbie Morris, President, General Hospital Fan Club, and all the important individual’s that work closely with her in planning these fan events, we got word in late 2008 that not only would the events continue, but they’d be taking place at a new location. Enter Airtel Plaza Hotel.

            Airtel Plaza Hotel

The Airtel Plaza Hotel is located in Van Nuys, CA. It is about 20 minutes away from the Sportsmen’s Lodge. At face value, there is nothing special about the hotel. But it is what’s on the inside that counts. Interestingly, the Airtel Plaza Hotel is located right next door to the Van Nuys Airport, hence “Air”tel. The hotel is for private planes only, so don’t go kicking yourself for booking your arrival at LAX or Burbank.

            Front Desk Check-in
Checking into the Airtel is simple. Like many hotels you enter the lobby and head straight to the front desk to confirm your reservation. Unlike many hotels, the Airtel’s staff doesn’t pretend to care about your needs, they just do. They answer all of your questions, no matter how tedious they might seem. They give you straight answers, not the run around. When do they stop serving dinner? What time does the bar close? The pool? The gym? What’s the nightly parking rates? Just some of the questions I asked when I checked into the hotel after 7:00 PM on Wednesday. For reference, the dinning room closes at 10:00 PM, the bar closes at about 1:00 AM (depending on the day of the week), the pool closes at 8:00 PM, the gym is open 24/7 and parking is $10 a night. One neat feature upon checking into the Airtel, at least during Fan Club Weekend, is the hotel has specially designed guest room keys to promote their appreciation that the events are being held at their hotel. The keys read “Airtel Plaza Hotel Welcomes 2009 ‘General Hospital’ Fan Club Weekend July 16th – 20th.”

            Dining
Dining at the Airtel is expensive if you are used to the prices at Jerry’s (there is no late night diner that I’m aware of at this time that you can go to as a hangout place). I had a meal with light portions for $17. While good, proportionally the cost does not compare to what you can get for the same price at an Applebee’s, TGI Friday’s or Dallas BBQ’s, but this is a hotel after all. Nothing comes cheap. My waiter answered all my questions and provided me with a second helping of their tasty bread. Not sure what’s in it, but something about it gives it a unique taste. The restaurant itself feels like you are in another world (pardon the pun). The setting is almost the equivalent of a private club if they dimmed the lights a little more. Though, it is better off the way it is as you can take in the scenery.

            Pool
While I have yet to actually get in the pool, from what I have seen there isn’t much to see. The pool is really tiny. If you are looking to swim laps, the pool is angled in such a way that it makes things difficult. Unless you want a cool down, I wouldn’t recommend this as part of your To-Do List.

            Hotel Room
Some of you may have a different room setting to go by, but my room compromises of a King Size bed with a couch, cable TV (including HBO), a complimentary fridge with a sink to wash dishes, room for a cot (if desired) that doesn’t force your roomate to walk around your sleeping form, and a bathroom that is broken into two sections. All together, the hotel room is grander than a studio apartment that could run you thousands a month, not including assorted building and maintenence fees. The bed is very comfortable. In fact, if I were not writing this piece, I’d probably still be enjoying said comfort.

            Expectations
All in all, the Airtel has so far exceeded my expectations. There are still a few days left of my stay here, but I forsee nothing of note that could change my view on this hotel. For those of you coming for the weekend’s events and are staying outside of the Airtel, you do not know what you are missing.

            Kickoff Party

Tonight is the kickoff party for the “General Hospital” Fan Club Weekend, but while I won’t be attending the event, i’m sure those of you who will, will have lots of stories to tell. Have fun, drink up, but keep the hangover elsewhere. We want you returning to your home’s safe and sound and again next year.

SON Top 10 (SoapOperaNetwork.com) — Offline for nearly seven months, only two weeks of data posted, fanbases at war, board members angered. What the heck happened to my SON Top 10? Your questions answered.

              What is It?

Soap Opera Network‘s Top 10 Chart (SON Top 10 for short) was a poll created for fans of daytime’s best actors and actresses to vote on who they thought was the best performing talent during a given week. The poll included the best couples and the best soaps. Nearly two years after its demise, it was brought back for members of our SON Community and readers of soapoperanetwork.com. Unfortunately, certain fanbases stuffed the ballots to such an extent that counting votes made it universally impossible to accurately report the results without either disqualifying said fanbase from participation or hurting the integrity of the Soap Opera Network staff.

              Solution and Requirements

After being offline and seemingly banished from the website for nearly seven months, Soap Opera Network‘s staff has worked together on ways they think the polling system could be brought back without causing much harm or drama.

The SON Top 10 will return to the world wide web on Friday, July 17, 2009. Votes can be cast for actors and actresses who appeared on “All My Children,” “As The World Turns,” “The Bold and the Beautiful,” “Days of our Lives,” “General Hospital,” “Guiding Light,” “One Life to Live,” and “The Young and the Restless” during the week of July 13, 2009. An actor or actress must have appeared on the soap during the polling week in order to qualify for that week’s poll. Votes cast for actors or actresses not appearing during the given timeframe will not count.

In order to cast a vote for the SON Top 10, you MUST be a registered member of the SON Community. We will no longer be accepting votes from non-members. You will not be able to vote without being a registered member, so don’t waste your time. We will no longer be featuring the couples category (or the PC “duos”) in the SON Top 10. We will debut a new poll for couples in August.

              To Register: SON Community Registration

If you have any questions or concerns about the new SON Top 10, please send your inquiries to top10@sonuni.com.

Michael Jackson (SoapOperaNetwork.com) — The memorial service for Michael “The King of Pop” Jackson on Tuesday, July 7 resulted in six of the remaining eight soap operas not airing, which has pushed five soaps behind schedule and one canceled soap airless.

ABC’s “All My Children,” “General Hospital” and “One Life to Live,” CBS’ “As The World Turns” and NBC’s “Days of our Lives” are currently airing one day behind, which has pushed airdates for new and returning characters to the soaps back. CBS’ “Guiding Light” aired in parts of the east coast as the soap airs at 10:00 AM in some cities, however, the soap was pre-empted in much of the country despite CBS’ anticipation of airing the show in progress. Jackson’s memorial service was originally scheduled to air from 1:00 to 2:30 PM on the East Coast and 10:00 to 11:30 AM on the West Coast, but it did not end until 4:00 PM Eastern and 1:00 PM Pacific time. CBS’ “The Young and the Restless” and “The Bold and the Beautiful” were the only soaps to air original episodes nationally without interruption as the network pushed the shows’ airings to earlier timeslots.

What follows are updated notes on comings and goings from some of your favorite daytime soap operas:

                AS THE WORLD TURNS
Lynn Herring Heads to Oakdale- now airs Monday, July 27.

As The World Turns (SoapOperaNetwork.com) — Further confirming that “Guiding Light” will truly come to an end when it last airs on Friday, September 18 on CBS, TeleNext Media, producers of the soap, announced on Wednesday, July 8 that “Guiding Light” Head Writer David Kreizman will join the writing team of “As The World Turns” along-side Head Writer Jean Passanante, thereby forming a New Headwriting team for the soap. The announcement was made by “As The World Turns” Executive Producer, Christopher Goutman.

“I am thrilled that Dave and Jean will make up the new headwriting team for ‘As The World Turns,’” said Goutman. “Both writers have an incredible respect for the show’s rich history and I am confident this partnership will generate the exciting, character-based stories for which ‘As The World Turns’ is known for.”

Before joining the writing team of “Guiding Light” in 1997, Kreizman was a Production Intern with the soap in 1995 and served as a Production Coordinator and an Associate Producer. In 2004, he was named Headwriter for which he won a 2007 Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing Team in a Drama Series. In 2001, Kreizman was part of the writing team of MTV’s “Spyder Games,” the short-lived soap opera that spawned a large cult-following upon its cancellation.

Jean Passanante was named Head Writer of “As The World Turns” in 2005, following the departure of Hogan Sheffer, who now serves as a Co-Head Writer on CBS’ “The Young and the Restless.”

“As The World Turns” airs Weekdays on CBS. Anytime on CBS.com. Check local listings.

                    Robert Voets/CBS

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — After months of speculation that Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki Newman) was getting the shaft by CBS’ “The Young and the Restless” and its producer Sony Pictures Television, TV Guide Magazine‘s Michael Logan sat down with the actress who confirms that she has signed a new deal with the soap after contract negotiations hit a stand-still.

“Negotiations are a necessary evil and are always very bizarre. I guess maybe with me more so than other actors. I don’t know why that is. It’s the nature of the world I’ve chosen to live in,” said Scott.

“It’s always the same scenario. First, contact is initiated. The protectors of both sides chat and everything is fine. Things go back and forth in a fairly friendly manner. Time marches on. And eventually there’s a moment—with seemingly no forewarning—when everything changes in the flick of an eye and both sides instinctively know that the dreaded cone of silence has suddenly descended and there will be no more talk and you have to shut down. It’s maddening. But I guess that’s showbiz.”

Things got so bad that the show was forced to write the character off the canvas despite its plans to eventually work something out with the actress. This resulted in some much needed vacation time for Thomas Scott and a huge storyline plot for “Y&R.”

“I’m going to take advantage of this overdue breather and have a little “me” time, travel a little bit, get reacquainted with my family and friends. I finished shooting just last Thursday [July 2]. And I really have to hand it to the writers.
