WHAT DO YOU THINK? Comment Below...

    go days!

  • andy d

DAYS did good, but they still need new writers and more vets. the daniel/abby/jenn/eve/jj/ paige show is sooooo not working!

    • Day’sDiva

ITA! I shudder to think what DOOL’s number will look like in the Fall when Scott and Ali leave! Daniel/Abby/Jenn/Paige/Eric–OH Gawd! Make it stop!!! They need to make Nicole and BRADY Day’s stars, bring back Rafe’s sister and Chad!

      • sands of time

Chad is coming back next month! Melanie is coming back too!!

      • Andrew Hass

It could be very interesting to see how the show handles James and Allison’s departures in the Fall.I would hope the show has something planned for EJ and Sami’s exits that creates story for the remaining characters on the show.

  • TV&MovieBuff

Good week for Days but that Friday rating is not good at all. Under 2 million viewers. That is not good at all.

Not too bad for Y&R and B&B. Good to see them up in the 18-49 viewers and glad Y&R held on to the #1 in 18-34.

    • David

Looking at the Friday numbers I know we usually see drops on that day but this week was considerable for all 4 soaps. Compare Mondays number to Friday and for each of the 4 soaps its between 700,000 to 1 million viewers difference

      • rob60990

The president interrupted on Friday is probably why the ratings on Friday are very low.

    • http://unknown.com Bexx

Compared to last week dropped they only had a marginal increase.

  • Nicole

    This is considered “good”? LMAO

    • Andrew Hass

Considering that Days was the only soap that gained in total and in all 3 demos from the previous week i consider that good. However i do think Friday was a bad day ratingswise for DOOL.

    • Fox

The best “good” thing about DAYS is that the rise was where it counts – in the 18-49W demo.

  • andy d

funny how days went up, but gh y&r and b&b all lost viewers

  • David

A good week for Days while they were up slightly from last week they were still done considerably from one year ago in all categories. Really not good numbers at all for any of the soaps

    • rob60990

DAYS just rebounded from a really bad week. This is not considered a good week imo.

  • vivien

I’m glad to see DAYS is putting Eric & Nicole back on track, that’s my favorite storyline. Not an Ejami fan, but I think it will help ratings if they get back together, they have a lot of fans (I’d prefer Lumi, but since Ali & James are leaving at the same time, I think they are the ones who are going to end up together. Their fans deserve a decent wedding.) The other storylines aren’t grabbing me.

  • sands of time

Obama should go ride a llama!

  • sands of time

I hope the lesbian storyline boosts ratings for Y&R.

    • Y&RViewer

What lesbian storyline? Is EH returning as Chloe to be hooked up with MCE’s Chelsea? That would be awesome as those two have more chemistry with each other than any hetero pairing! Bring it on!

      • http://unknown.com Bexx

No. This troll is implying a lesbian storyline between Melody Thomas Scott and Meredith Baxter. Obviously since Meredith is openly gay in real life she could only be joining the show to play a gay character. What does her personal life have to do with anything? I guess people still assume that gay people are incapable of playing anything else. There are spumors that say Meredith will playing Stitch and Kelly’s mom, and to my knowledge Nikki Newman is a straight woman. Of course I wouldn’t expect an homophobic troll looking for up votes, and attention would bother searching for this information.

        • sands of time

I know gay people can play straight and straight people can play gay. I don’t understand why you are so against Nikki’s drinking buddy becoming her lover. Y&R has a good thing with MB and should run with it. That’s not being homophobic or trollish.

          • Andrew Hass

I would have no problem with Y&R doing a lesbian storyline with Meredith Baxter’s character but not with Nikki because she isn’t gay. However i don’t think Meredith Baxter wants to get a job because she’s gay.

          • sands of time

Who says Nikki isn’t bi? Besides, MB lived as a straight woman for many years. I would think if Y&R plans to do what I’m guessing, they hired her for her talent and for playing what she holds close to her.

Do the Y&R viewers want to go down the same Nikki drinking storyline for the millionth time or see the storyline jazzed up? If, and I said if this time, MB’s character is gay, it would be logical for her to put the moves on Nikki when they’re drunk together…that tends to happen.

          • Andrew Hass

I think the show is going to keep Nikki straight but that doesn’t mean that Meredith Baxter’s character won’t be gay or make a move on Nikki at some point.

          • JayTN

In reality, a lot of gay celebrities do not “live as a straight person”. They simply live their life openly to their friends and family. For example, it has been stated that most of Liberace’s friends (including Betty White) knew that he was gay – he didn’t make an attempt to hide it from them – but cultivated a “straight” (or at least non-gay) persona on stage.

I don’t know anything about Meredith Baxter’s private life, but she may have been the same way. Countless other celebrities are the same way. It may not be that they are necessarily “living” as a straight person, they simply believe that their private life is none of our business. Years ago – during Liberace’s heyday – it may have been a necessity, but not in today’s more tolerant society.

          • sands of time

Nice post JayTN, but Liberace is a bad example. He was very flamboyant. You also avoided the issue. Why is it that some here like to call me homophobic for questioning if DAYS should keep or end Sonny and Will and get upset at the thought of a lesbian storyline on Y&R? To me, it is homophobic for a suggestion to be put down like that. Also, it is saying DAYS must keep that story going, but please keep it away from Y&R. Looks like some people want their cake and eat it too! DAYS has proven not to be homophobic. I’m not homophobic, but if the masses don’t want the story, I agree it should end. If you and others don’t understand that, then put your money where your mouth is…demand such a story for Y&R. Or are you homophobic? Were you one of the fans that had the homophobic Y&R get rid of their gay character and banish him forever? Are you scared ratings will go down by Nikki and Maureen going down? If that’s not good for Y&R, then it’s not good for any!

          • JayTN

I used Liberace as an example because he was “out” to his friends and family but was not so accommodating to the public at large (and even won a lawsuit against a tabloid for publishing a story insinuating that he was gay). I used that as an argument to your statement that “MB [Meredith Baxter] lived as a straight woman for many years”. I know she was married to David Birney, but we don’t know the details of that relationship. Perhaps Neil Patrick Harris would be a better example. I don’t know if he ever publicly proclaimed his heterosexuality (or if he needed to), or if people just assumed that he was straight.

I don’t have a problem with Will & Sonny on “Days”, although I do fault the writers for letting them languish without a storyline. I would not have a problem with Y&R adding gay characters. I think some people feel that it is a tad homophobic to think that Meredith Baxter would automatically have to play a lesbian character. Most of her on-screen roles have been straight women, even after her public acknowledgment of her sexuality. However, I am not in favor of adding gay characters just so Y&R – or any TV series – can point to them and use them as props to show how “progressive” that show is (something that I think “Days” may be guilty of, given the lack of legitimate storylines for Will & Sonny).

      • sands of time

        My comment was speculation.

    • vivien

lol, since when are you a fan of Y&R? or are you being sarcastic? ;)

      • sands of time

I’m not a fan of Y&R, but if DAYS has Will and Sonny, Y&R can have Nikki and Maureen. Most Y&R fans like to put their two cents in regarding what’s right and wrong with Will and Sonny/DAYS…turnabout is fair play!

        • vivien

Soaps have a long history of turning straight characters gay. All of Bianca’s (AMC) lovers were straight to begin with. GH’s Lucas and DAYS’ Will were both interested in girls before they were “turned”. One of the guys in OLTL’s “Kish” was straight at first. It would surprise me but wouldn’t shock me if Nikki turned gay, but she and Victor are endgame. And that is something soaps have never done, even though they think it’s okay to turn a straight person gay, it’s not okay to go the other way.

          • Andrew Hass

Yeah DOOL’s Will and OLTL’s Fish were straight when we first saw them but i think there were always signs there that they could be gay.Plus some DOOL’s fans always thought Will was gay and the show was just waiting for the right time to tell the story. As for Y&R’s Nikki i see her staying straight because as you point out she and Victor are endgame. However it wouldn’t surprise me if the show does do a lesbian storyline with MB’s new character but not with Nikki. However at first the show may not reveal to us if MB’s character is gay or straight.

          • sands of time

Avery’s cooking show can be jazzed up by having Nikki and Maureen do a muffin taste test.

  • http://unknown.com Bexx

Nice to see Y&R isn’t down is all the demos.

  • http://www.soundcloud.com/cigo8179 Christopher I. Gomes

I don’t understand where the audience is? This doesn’t make sense? Viewers watch on other devices, and use other sources. That should be factored in. These ratings does not reflect the viewership of daytime dramas. I just don’t believe it.

    • TV&MovieBuff

You are looking at ratings as a measure of the popularity of a show. Ratings are not about popularity — only fans make it to be that way. The purpose of these ratings are not to see how many people totally are watching a show. These ratings are to measure exactly what they say — how many people are watching live or shortly thereafter. The reason they measure this is to see how much the networks can expect to charge advertisers to advertise on their program. Advertisers are not immediately worried about how many people might see their ad in 7 days or more. They are worried about how many they can expect to see it in a short amount of time. Shows that have a higher rating for that amount of time can expect to charge more. If an advertiser is thinking about buying advertisement on some other format that airs the show then they will seek out how many people are watching in that format.

Soap fans do watch in other formats, and that is good. But as to the budget of each show just like in primetime the budget is mostly set and paid by those advertisements that air during the live show. Whether we like it or not — it is the way it is — and these ratings measure that audience.

      • http://www.soundcloud.com/cigo8179 Christopher I. Gomes

Ok, but if you know there is a bigger audience. Advertisers should know that their demographic are going to buy what it is they are advertising. I just feel that I know GH, DOOL, etc.. are watched by more than 2 million ppl. I just know it. And, these ratings don’t reflect the overall audience, which is a gross misconduct of justice for these shows. AMC, OLTL, etc, shouldn’t have been canceled. Advertisers need to come up with new ways of advertising to the daytime audience. If they want their product promoted to that specific audience. JMHO!!! Or, a new president of Daytime for all these networks, needs to be appointed. I just don’t see how the audience has eroded so depreciably over the last 15 years!!! It is mind-boggling. I remember GH, use to be in the 5.0 range and that was in 1998, I just don’t know where the audience is? They need to come back and support their shows. It sucks!!!

        • TV&MovieBuff

But again you are looking at it from a fan’s point of view. Put yourself in the place of the advertiser. They are paying to advertise on television. Those ads are not shown in full even for On Demand or when the show is shown online. They are not going to be willing to pay a high price to advertise just with the promise that there are viewers out there and they might see their ad. If they do guess who is going to pay for the higher price to advertise that product — me and you. If advertisers pay more then they are going to charge more for their product. Also if the networks promise a bigger audience and then that audience doesn’t come in — guess what they have to give the advertisers free advertising on another program. Guess who’s budget that affects — the show that didn’t deliver the audience that the network executive promised it would.

Fans want to look and see a big number there for their program. But ratings aren’t about that. They are about money and that is the bottom line. Advertisers are moving closer to embracing all the new formats of watching, but all the kinks still have not been worked out. In time they will, but for now live viewing is still key to the survival of our shows. All the extra viewers are like icing on a cake, but still the most important part is the cake.

          • http://www.soundcloud.com/cigo8179 Christopher I. Gomes

Cake, Cake, Cake, Cake…. I understand where you are coming from. I just find it hard to believe that these are the actual numbers? 2 million to 5 million viewers. Audiences are there. What will it take for them to come back to their respective shows. I think Daytime should focus on romance, and basic structure, family. I hope the viewers come back! Thank you for the information. #bottomline

        • Elizabeth_Erwin

Well, you would have a very good idea if you went on the internet to see how good GH was in 1998 compared with how good it is today… In 1998 it was intensely heartfelt and compelling drama with nuance and layering and emotive music intertwined with great acting and storytelling. Now it is a quick, superficial and episodic migration from one plot point to the next, with a complete mishmash of characters – mostly new (with the newbies eating up all the airtime, poster child being Nina Clay). Granted, the show was easily ten minutes longer in ’98, allowing for more color in the stories. But today’s show is nowhere near the quality.

          • http://www.soundcloud.com/cigo8179 Christopher I. Gomes

I totally agree with you. I was around 16 in 1998 and I was very into the show, particularly around 1996. I was a big Vanessa Marcil fan. I thought the acting was stellar and the plots were drawn out and very emotive. I use to love the music played (score), at that time. I felt the show was great then. 1997, not so much. But still in a great place. When they lost me, was after Brenda was killed off, and Maurice Benard became the epicenter of the show. I feel like the acting was lacking as well. Bob Guza was great in the 90’s I don’t know what happened, in the 00’s it was a completely different show, with Carly who I use to really like at the forefront with Sonny. I feel the show use to interact all the characters together, I am starting to see a resemblance of the show I use to know. I am just hoping that with time they can find a nice rhythm. I am graduating college and my dream was to work on this show. I would love to be a writer or an assistant or anything. I just have so much adoration for the history of this show. I remember the montages they use to do at the end. Using contemporary music, but with budget cuts that went out the window, I have been back watching for about 2 to 3 years now and this past year was rather decent. I hope that the structure of the show gets better, there are characters we don’t need and characters that need to come back. “Brenda” Vanessa Marcil. I hope that they can relive the glory days again. (Gloria Monty), and put the show back on top. 5.0, 6.0 ratings!!! #JK

          • Stendu

Ditto! Agree with everything you said, down to the fact that 1997 was an extremely horrible year and should be eliminated from the extraordinary decade the 90’s were! Oh, and I also was 16 in 1998!lol Vanessa is pretty much my favorite actress of all time!

          • http://www.soundcloud.com/cigo8179 Christopher I. Gomes

Yes!!! I love her… Just saw her movie “Stranded In Paradise.” #awesome #greatactress :-)

      • http://unknown.com Bexx

Someone mentioned on an unrelated board that Nielsen also tracks Twitter activity on some level, which is why the shows advertise their hashtags during live shows. Is that actually true?

        • TV&MovieBuff

They have a totally separate category for Twitter and Social Media. They do not factor into the regular ratings. TV By The Numbers reports the results of those from time to time, but I have never seen just a separate breakdown for daytime. I think they are just all thrown in together for all venues of TV.

          • http://unknown.com Bexx

Thank you very much! I was just wondering, because apparently Kelly Monaco said at her most recent fan club event that social media plays a huge part in the direction of the stories for GH.

    • Andrew Hass

I agree.I know that Daytime can’t do what prime time does in that their ratings are based on live and 3 day DVR because they only an episode a week and not even a new episode every week.Daytime on the other hand mostly air 5 new episodes a week. However maybe Daytime could find a way to change their rating system. For example maybe the weekend can count as part of Friday’s ratings.

      • TV&MovieBuff

But that still only makes the ratings look better for fans. The people that are paying Nielsen to gather the ratings want to know how many people are watching the show live. What if J C Penny’s buys ad time on Friday’s show that advertises a big sale coming up that weekend. They are willing to pay for live viewers that are going to see the ad not for those that might wait to see it on Sunday after the sale has ended. Not all ads are time centered but there is a reason why advertisers want to know how many people watch Live plus so many hours afterward. They and the networks pay to have that measured.

        • Andrew Hass

I understand your point. However instead of basing the ratings on just live and same day viewing they could extend into the next day a little too. Some people might record the soaps and then watch them late at night or even early the next morning before they go to work.

          • TV&MovieBuff

They already do that. It says Live plus 1 day — they count all the way up to 3 a.m. the next morning. I had thought it was longer but someone posted here a few weeks ago it was to 3 a.m. So what you are proposing already happens to a degree. Then they count up to 7 days afterward for the Season to Date ratings. After 7 days does not count at all.

This is the same problem that Prospect Park was running into with AMC and OLTL online. They needed people to watch sooner because that is when the prime advertising dollars are. People were not watching when they needed them too.

Advertisers have been doing this for years. And it is not going to change. With the economy and the fact that there is so much more competition for their ad dollars, I don’t see them changing any time soon. They want and need the most immediate return on their dollar.

Extending the amount of time for ratings purpose would only do one thing. It would make it look better for fans because there would be a higher number, but until advertisers are willing to pay more for later viewing it will just be a number.

          • Andrew Hass

Maybe they could push it to 9 a.m. the next day for ratings to count for the previous day’s episode.I don’t think 6 more hours would make that much difference.Plus i read somewhere that people who record the soaps on DVR to count in the ratings they can’t skip the commercials. So it could be interesting to see how many people do that and if they didn’t would that help the ratings. The ratings system will probably never change until someone comes up with an idea that benefits the advertisers.

          • http://www.soundcloud.com/cigo8179 Christopher I. Gomes

Who watches commercials anyway, thats why we edit them out… Advertisers are stupid!!!

  • http://unknown.com Bexx

Homophobic people really make me sick. Imagine the idea that because a person is gay they can only play a gay character on television. Y&R has an openly gay actor who has no trouble playing a straight man.

    • sands of time

MB is a lesbian. Saying she is a lesbian most likely playing a lesbian does not make me homophobic. MB has made a point of talking about being a lesbian since she came out. It is reasonable to think Y&R would use that to their advantage. If they don’t, then they’ll be dropping the ball. It’s funny that I’m called a homophobe for calling things as I see them, yet you’re watching and defending a show which is homophobic. You are the one so scared to accept the fact that a lesbian story could be unfolding!

      • Andrew Hass

However maybe Meredith Baxter doesn’t want people just because she’s gay she’s playing a gay character or her being gay is why Y&R hired her because they want to do a lesbian storyline with her character.I ‘m sure MB wants to be hired because of her acting talents and not her sexuality.

      • Myles Stevens

I am surprised Y&R hasn’t done a gay storyline (not counting MAB’s pitiful attempts) since JFP had gay characters on GH and Jean Passanante wrote a prominent gay story on As the World Turns.

        • sands of time

When Mrs. C. died, Y&R chose not to bring back Phillip for the funeral. The actor offered, but they ignored him…shameful.

          • Myles Stevens

Though that could have had something to do with the fact that his acting is atrocious.

          • TV&MovieBuff

His acting is atrocious plus that storyline was totally wrong and best forgotten. Sometimes it is better to leave something alone than remind viewers of how bad a story bombed. And that one bombed big time.

          • sands of time

Why was that storyline totally wrong? Is it because the character is gay? Are you homophobic? Y&R made the character gay and there was a huge homophobic backlash by Y&R fans and their gay character is gone forever and you’re happy about it? And you and your fellow Y&R viewers sit back and call DAYS fans homophobic for questioning the validity of DAYS homosexual storylines…You are a bull shitter!

          • Patrick Ferrando

He wasn’t the only one that didn’t return that should have.
It has nothing to do with any gay issue. Phelps is just an idiot.
It’s foolish of you to keep claiming this when YR has gay actors on its payroll.
Stop bashing YR and worry about the sands running out on Days. They may be numbered.

    • sands of time

You are the biggest bull shitter of them all!!!

  • http://unknown.com Bexx

Phyllis makes her return tomorrow, and I am so looking forward to some of these major stories finally wrapping up. All we need now is Adam!

    • RobNYC

Y&R was really good yesterday and seems to be getting good again. Hopefully Phyllis awakens an recovers fast so we can see her in action soon. Overalll, I am glad I started tuning in again to Y&R. The show is not in its heyday by any means but the new faces that bothered me are starting to grow on me.

      • http://unknown.com Bexx

Definitely! Things are looking much better even if the ratings do not reflect it. People are also starting to warm up to Burgess Jenkins. He has great chemistry with Victoria and Johnny, plus the Billy Miller drama is finally dying down. Did you happen to see the CBS video with Josh, Gina, and Hunter? Gina has chemistry with both Josh and Hunter, and she appears much older than she really is. I think it’s going to being a wild ride once Phyllis recovers her memory.
Also, someone mentioned on another board that perhaps the show has someone in mind to play Adam, but he may be working on another show or film, and they are waiting for his contract to end. I thought that was intriguing considering that JFP said that we won’t see Adam until the fall.

I actually really don’t mind thew recast of Billy. I prefer Burgess Jenkins over the other two and as far as Adam is concerned, I liked the Adam before Michael Muhney and expect I will like the new one too. Was never a MM fan. Never got the broad appeal. I am glad they are waiting on someone who is a sure fit. Have to say I really enjoy Cady McClain too. I do wish they would change back to the old background music though. Haven’t seen the CBS video. Will look for it…BTW….I read that when Ashley returns she will be edgy and a lot of airtime with several younger male suiters. That will be fun.

I’m not a huge Billy fan so it didn’t matter much to me who portrayed him. I do however like Burgess, and he seems to be improving as time goes by. I agree about Muhney. I like Cady, but absolutely hate the way they are writing for her, and I question what will happen to Kelly once Phyllis wakes up. She doesn’t seem to have much going on outside of Ben and Jack. I wonder if they are going to test Ashley and Ben again? I know Avery’s ex-husband Joe is suppose to be a business man. Also, I have a feeling Ian is about to turn up dead.

I wish they would give Cady more airtime and a little edge but I enjoyed her as Rosanna on ATWT. I think you are right on about Ian Ward. I hope it isn’t a murder mystery because they can easily botch that.

Plus maybe because the show just brought on a recast for Phyllis they want to wait a bit before bringing on new Adam too.Having 2 big recasts happen around the same time may not sit well with the fans.So the show may know who they want as Adam and even have a deal in place but maybe is waiting until he starts taping to announce it.Plus maybe the new actor wants to spend the rest of the Summer with his family before joining Y&R.

Thanks! I never thought that perhaps they didn’t want two major recasts at the same time. I guess I’m in the minority, but I enjoy when new characters appear, even if it’s for a short time. Judging by the recent episodes with “The Hand” and his continued and increasing involvement with Chelsea and Connor, I think the Execs already have someone signed.

I’ve posted this elsewhere, but Days needs to do more than just rely on Eileen to pick up a few viewers.
They’ve been trending down quite a bit.
Glad to see increases for ALL shows in that ridiculous demo of 18-49. Time to get rid of it. It’s an outdated method to use for advertising rates.

    • Andrew Hass

I agree.Plus since Eileen Davidson,James Scott and Allison Sweeney will all be leaving around the same time in October or so i hope the show has something in place to deal with those 3 departures. In the next 2 months the show might gain viewers and get to a better place in the ratings but it won’t matter if they lose all those viewers once those actors leave.Plus last year the show was in 3rd place in total viewers and ahead of GH by 15,000.Now this year they are in 4th place and behind GH by 512,000 viewers. So over the last year GH has gained 527,000 more viewers than DOOL has.IMO that’s not good.So Days needs to turn things around fast.Yeah the show has been renewed through 2016 but the question is how many viewers will still be around then?

      • sands of time

Changes are already taking place on DAYS in preparation for those departures. Kassie DePaiva joined the cast as Eve. Chad DiMera will show up next month. Melanie is on her way. Strengthening the African American ties are in the works. Vets are being used more. DAYS has untapped talent that will be strengthened.

NBC is showing loyalty to DAYS more than ABC is showing to GH. Ratings aren’t everything. ABC can end GH no matter if it’s in third or fourth place. NBC gave DAYS two more years at least. ABC gave GH one more year at least. And now, ABC is changing several market viewing times for GH…No soap is safe. They all have their problems; hidden or otherwise.

        • Andrew Hass

I have nothing against the characters of Eve,Chad and Melanie but can they replace EJ,Sami and Kristen? As for GH they got renewed one more year at least by ABC but maybe that’s better than a multi-year extension.Days has that extra year to fall back on even if ratings sink.GH on the other hand knows they have to keep the ratings up in the present and not worry about the future because that will take care of itself.Plus since GH only tapes a month or so in advance they have more time to fix things if they see fans don’t like something versud Days who tapes so far in advance.

        • Patrick Ferrando

Kassie did nothing to help the ratings. Sorry.
People don’t follow “names” from soap to soap.
I think ED is an exception in Days case, but I don’t really see YR getting any bump from ratings when she returns.
          Thrilled by it though!

Actually the real winner is General Hospital with 427,000 more viewers than last year! I love GH right now. Love the veteran actors but also the newbies Maura West and Michelle Stafford. They both make the best out of the material and are awesome to watch.
I am happy Days of our Lives picked up viewers. I enjoy the show, but I CANNOT watch the Nicole/ Eric storyline. I have rarely seen so many cringeworthy moments and always wind forward. I used to love Nicole, but I think they wrote her into a pathetic character. I actually think both actors are both good and I don’t blame them, it is in my opinion an awfully written outdated storyline.

It is good to see that Days is doing better..it does feel like they are squandering Kristin’s return by confining her interaction to just her and Daniel for a full week. Time is ticking – she is only on for a few months – get her out there with Brady and Marlena and get her out of confines of a linen closet/truck. Rumor has it that when Eileen returns to Y&R her Ashley character will evolve into a more edgy and exciting side to her. I am hoping we see her get in Marlenas face this week. Will stay tuned.
