WHAT DO YOU THINK?
  • sands of time

    The numbers are getting YuckieR!

    • Patrick Ferrando

Days is down the biggest percentage in total viewers over last year.
      15%. Not good.
All soaps down in demos over last year. Horrible.
Angie better do something over at CBS.

  • JayTN

This is the first time that Y&R has fallen below a 3.0 rating for an individual day (not counting repeat or holiday airings). This may also be the first time that Y&R has dropped below 4 million viewers on an individual, non-repeat/holiday, day. Some holidays week are good for the soaps, and some are bad. This happened to be a “bad” holiday week for Y&R, as Monday was the soap’s second best day, but was excluded from the ratings…making Friday’s drop below 4 million even more pronounced in the weekly tally.

I don’t expect Sony/CBS to make any immediate changes to Y&R. The reason is that Fridays seem to be a bad day every week for Y&R recently. If the soap is not able to recover and suggest that the numbers for 5/30 were an anomaly, then the jobs of EP Jill Farren Phelps and the head writers may be safe. However, if the numbers continue to sink, then Phelps, and writing triumvirate of Passanante, Thomson and Altman may be on the chopping block. Since long-time Y&R writer Kay Alden is no longer with B&B, Sony should bring her back to Y&R, if as nothing more than a storyline consultant.

    • Forgotten Y&R Demographic

First and foremost, Sony and CBS are corporations; in BUSINESS to make money and with ratings on the slide, so will ad dollars. You don’t wait until a patient is DOA before deciding to give them CPR; SONY needs to fire the lot before Y&R loses another million viewers!

      • JayTN

You also don’t want to “jump the gun” like Prospect Park did with the online reboots of OLTL and AMC. OLTL had 4 different teams of head writers during a 40 episode production cycle (with episodes from the fourth head writing team not even making it to air). If broadcast or cable networks – which, I agree, are businesses – made changes behind and in front of the camera everytime the ratings went down, they would have to build a revolving door in front of the studio.

I believe that Sony/CBS will wait to see if last week was a “hiccup” or something more serious. History would seem to indicate this…look at how long Sony/CBS allowed Maria Arena Bell to tear Y&R down.

        • ForgottenY&RDemographic

Sony made the mistake previously with MAB–she stayed too long at the faire, as it were and Y&R has never recovered! Sure BM and MS’ departure adversely affected the show but the WRITING AND the decision to bring on and showcase all these newbies, characters in whom viewers have no vested interest or care about, is sinking the show! So many viewers are flabbergasted by JFP’s belief that a team of newbies, in which few are invested, should drive Story with Legacies as back up–this alone is a recipe for disaster and the ratings prove it! Bad decision after horrible decision–that formula is one for failure! When JFP came onboard, she had the unmitigated gall to state that VIEWERS did not now what they needed–she did! How insulting! Well, the same viewers now hope Sony come to the decision they have had for a long time–JFP and the inept HWs NEED to be fired!

    • nyvoter

Contract timing is also a factor to be considered. If JFP signed a two-year contract, it would be up for renewal in August; but, if she signed a three-year contract, I do not think SONY would be willing to eat the extra year, if the situation were at hand. More likely, however, if ratings continue to fall, either or both of the head writers may be sacrificed, since they both probably only got one-year contracts. I think any move to fire someone will more likely come firstly from CBS than SONY, the opposite of how it went down with MAB. No matter her faults, JFP has significantly cut SONY’s operational budget … a mighty big plus for SONY that CBS might not necessarily share if advertising revenue is being impacted.

    • sands of time

Doesn’t Brad Bell have a brother? Is he a writer? Could he take over with their sister? Or could Brad take over for a while? Is any of that possible?

      • sands of time

        I guess Maria is Brad’s sister-in-law?

With all the Bells, why can’t they take control of Y&R?

      • ROBNYC

I think the Bell family was forced out of YR when they sold it and now own BB completely but have no stake in YR. That is why it is sinking.

        • TV&MovieBuff

The Bells never did own Y&R completely like they did B&B. Corday Productions I think owns like 1% and the rest is owned by the Bells and by Sony (which was originally Columbia Pictures or something like then when it debuted).

The Bells have always been the sole owners of B&B but not Y&R.

      • WMD

Brad’s brother is Bill Bell, Jr., however, I don’t think he’s a writer. Last I checked, he was President of Y&R’s production company…which I think only exists as a formality, with Sony calling all the shots.

        • JayTN

William J. “Bill” Bell, Jr. is involved in the business end of Y&R, not the creative side like his brother. Rumor has it that Sony made Bill tell Maria, his wife, that her services were no longer needed as EP/head writer of Y&R back in 2012.

  • ROBNYC

Let the revolt against JFP begin. This has the potential to collapse CBS entire afternoon lineup. If THE TALK as down then Julie Chen is paying attention and that means trouble for JFP. She needs to be retired.

  • Mags123

When are TPTB at Y&R going to take action?? Losing close to 2 million viewers since um, Hmmm, oh yeah, January 30 should tell them something.Letting MM and BM go was a HUGE mistake, Boring dumb story lines, mediocre acting. JFP needs to GO!

  • cr5704 .

If the revolution had worked gh would have been axed back in April 2012 and now yr is constantly dropping

    • Danny Hill

i’ve not watched Y&R since shortly after it ‘expanded’ on one hour, but my guess if these numbers keep dropping, Y&R could be canceled..and my money says B&B will be ‘expanded’ and half the cast of Y&R will be ‘incorporated’ into that cast…

  • sands of time

DAYS…I don’t understand the numbers! Maybe Kassie and Eileen will change things.

    • truth

I totally understand the numbers ! This show is awful and boring, all this show is around boring Jennifer and her boring children as well as her boring ‘Hero’ boyfriend Daniel..Jennifer and her ‘family’ are maybe from the legacy family the Horton but it is certainly not enough! Horton or not when characters suck they should not drive and be at the center of stories..viewers doesn’t give a damn about their ‘name’ when they suck and just made us viewers changing the channel.

  • cr5704 .

This is bad for the genre

  • Derrick

    Oh hellllllllllllllllllllllll Y&R :( :(

    • sands of time

Well, at least Eileen Davidson will be acting her heart out on DAYS!!!

      • Derrick

What does ED acting on DAYS have anything to do with Y&R tanking?

        • sands of time

It’s decisions like letting her go that’s causing the Y&R mess. JFP is not liked by the performers. The ones that act like they do are only scared of her.

          • Derrick

Yes but JFP wasn’t the cause of her being let go, MAB was………………..

          • TV&MovieBuff

Well not just MAB. Sony wanted her on Days to save Days. So they made her go to Days — something that she has said many times she did not want to do. She was forced over there to finish her contract and the minute it was over she quit.

          • sands of time

Eileen chose to go to DAYS this time. Be ready!!!

          • Andrew Hass

You are right that Eileen Davidson chose to be on DOOL this time but i’m wondering if Y&R wanted her back full time too which one would she choose?

          • sands of time

I’m thinking Eileen would want to choose Y&R because that is her first love, but after realizing how she was treated like a has been, she would choose her new love.

          • Andrew Hass

If it ever came down to a choice between Y&R and DOOL i think Eileen Davidson would be legitimately torn. However i think one of the reasons she left Days last year was because they were using her too much and that was taking time away from her personal life.So if she has to choose it may come down to which soap can give her what she wants. Now as for the ratings it was a bad week but for some of the soaps i think it was like the 3rd straight week or so of losing viewers. However i think Y&R has a better chance of turning things around than DOOL because they tape only a month or so in advance and Days tapes 5 months in advance.

          • sands of time

            ED was never forced!

          • sands of time

Eileen Davidson chose to go back this time and she was never forced to go to DAYS the previous time.

She also loved working at DAYS from about 1994 -1999.

  • Andrew Hass

It was a bad week for the soaps but i do think it’s good for GH that they gained 238,000 viewers from the same time last year.Plus that was the only for any soap in any category.

  • David

Not too good of a week for the soaps. GH looked to have the best results as in total viewers they were still up from 1 year ago and only down 30,000 from last week. The 18-49 key demo only saw GH lose 30,000 from last week and only 22,000 from last year So not a horrible week as the losses were minimal for GH. The others not so much and not looking good for Y&R. Everyone said JFP would cause this to happn, wish it was not but slowly but surely she is killing Y&R

  • TV&MovieBuff

Sony needs to do some work on both of their shows. The big story right now is Y&R but Days is hurting too. Both shows have been down for weeks and this is the 8th week Y&R has either hit or tied a low in the 18-49. That is the key demo.

Days this time last year was at a 2 year high in total viewers. And they continued to grow through the month of June.

And they’ve just come off a murder mystery. They had the most intriguing promos for May sweeps but sorry for most of the month I found them very boring at times. They had a few exciting days thrown in here and there but often the actual shows seemed to drag or not live up to the promos.

And Y&R was often the same way. For way too many days the show just seems to drag along. A lot of the stuff is not as bad as Griffith or MAB, but these writers are just not right for Y&R. Even beyond Phelps the problem is with the writing. I am like Jay-TN, I don’t believe in acting too quickly but in this case I feel if they have any chance of selling all the casting changes they are making — the first thing they need to do is fix the writing. These writers I don’t feel have any chance of helping to sell any of these new faces.

    • Linda

Bring back MM and save the show!

    • http://unknown.com Bexx

Every story just seems like fillers. The same people having the same talk every single day. They have so many storylines right now that just need to end, starting with the cooking show nonsense. I was so hoping for a real war between Ian and Victor.

      • sands of time

        It’s a YackeR of a show!

  • sands of time

Every comment that I posted has to wait to be approved. I may have to step it up at other sites.

You may be able to squash my comments here, but you can’t keep YawneR from sinking.

  • sands of time

If people keep supporting all the talk, game and cooking shows; the soaps will be dead. Huge trouble over YondeR and Eileen Davidson is making a big return to DAYS. It’s bad to be a YawneR.

  • Candy

    I thought DOOL & Y & R were both owned by the same company. I quit watching Y & R years ago.

    • JayTN

Both Y&R and “Days” are properties of Sony. CBS and NBC pay a license fee to Sony for the privilege of airing them.

  • Only watch Y&R and B&B on CBS

JFP is destroying Y&R just as she destroyed other soaps. And CBS doesn’t care now as they didn’t care then.

    • Andrew Hass

CBS doesn’t produce Y&R.They just air it and they just renewed it for 3 more years. Now CBS could go to Sony and urge them make some changes in regards to Y&R but they may not have much power.Just like NBC may not have much say about DOOL because they don’t own it and they renewed that for 2 more years. So both CBS and NBC might be up the creek in what they can do.

      • TV&MovieBuff

CBS and NBC have made very strong suggestions in the past and have often gotten their way with what they want. But not always. I know rumors have said a few times NBC wouldn’t renew Days if certain changes weren’t made. I think they may have been the ones who forced James Reilly back to Days when ratings were low. But in the end it is Sony and either Corday at Days or the Bells at Y&R that make the decisions.

        • http://unknown.com Bexx

It’s the perfect time for Sony to clean from the top down. While they are at it, they should get rid of some of the dead weight we have on screen now.

        • Andrew Hass

NBC did renew DOOL through 2016 back in January and maybe they did suggest changes before doing that. However since the show tapes so far in advance maybe we are just seeing the changes. For example maybe NBC wanted Eileen Davidson back on DOOL because they know she could help the show.

  • Linda

what more proof do you need to save a sinking ship. Throw JFP overboard and bring back Michael Muhney and Billy Miller. Ratings started to fall and have not stopped since they left. This goes for all actors on the show Show support tobring them back or the entire cast will be looking for work very soon if this continues! Please bring MM back before it’s too late!

  • http://unknown.com Bexx

It’s time to get rid of Altman and Passanante, can’t believe how much they wasted TR. I know Josh wasn’t well-liked, but he was better than the two we have now.

  • http://unknown.com Bexx

What does CBS have to spin? Everyone can see the numbers. Try a better tactic next time.

    • JayTN

Exactly. CBS doesn’t have to spin anything. They pick and choose the subjects of their press releases. If they want to ignore bad news, they simply do not put out a press release. Press releases, by their very design, are meant to be nothing more than (positive) propaganda for the networks.

    • Harlee

Yes, you’re right about the numbers but all at CBSSony are not taking responsibility and spinning it’s not “My fault” on “why” this is happening and not taking action to fire JFPJeanShelley because this is very serious. Last Friday at 2.9, plus a 3.0 NEVER in YR’s history! This isn’t just one week we’re entering now week 8…

      • http://unknown.com Bexx

I believe someone mentioned that Y&R has fallen below 3.0 once before. Sony/CBS really need to clean house. It’s unimaginable to think they would allow the show to sink any further.

  • Harlee

This is super serious with YR, but know wonder WAAAAAAY to many new faces and very little vets truly front & center driving story. JFPJeanShelley and the rest of the GH leftover hacks from breakdown, music & casting need to be fired. I still say and believe we need Alden, Smith, along with Rex included and rest of BILL’s TEAM including David Kuntz – music again, Cyd in casting again, ES isn’t available at BB so why not John Conboy who put YR on the map and was EP for the first 10 years all back to ground the show again…they know these characters!!!!

    • sands of time

My research for viewers happy and content with their soaps:

      DOOL- 84%
      GH-77%
      B&B-68%
      Y&R-23%

  • cr5704 .

Do you think abc will revive amc and oltl

    • Daniel NYC

GH proves that it can be done!! They had weeks when they were at 1.6 (weekly averages) only two years ago. And GH is significantly better in the key demos than everything else ABC put on after killing AMC and OLTL.

That’s also something we have to keep in mind when we see these current ratings for Y&R and DAYS. They are still drawing numbers in the key demos that are actually very good and even many primetime shows would be happy to have them! And they are still better than two years ago, although running the risk of losing some or even a bigger part of the ground they had re-gained over the last year.

Nevertheless, all the four soaps proved last year that it is possible to make huge gains, IF the quality (of the writing) is good. So, they have to take a lesson from that and deliver high-quality storytelling among some other things they can learn from GH.

    • KansasGuest

No. Not while the lawsuit between ABC & Prospect Park regarding those two shows is still active & ongoing.

  • JayTN

I should have clarified my comments by saying that this is the first time during the tenure of Jill Farren Phelps that Y&R has dropped below a 3.0 daily rating.

Those numbers you referenced are from April 2012. By July 2012, EP Maria Arena Bell was gone and replaced by Phelps. Coincidence?

  • ROBNYC

GH question. I have been watching for an week. Does Donna Mills ever make an appearance? The show seems great. Thoroughly enjoying it.

    • KansasGuest

I don’t know if Madeline will be coming back. Mills only agreed to a limited guest appearance. But, anything is possible!

      • ROBNYC

        Thanks. Sorry I missed her.

    • Andrew Hass

Reportedly Donna Mills was back taping.Plus since Nina is awake now and finding out what her mother did i would hope that they would have a confrontation.Maybe if they do we’ll see a different side of Nina.

  • KansasGuest

Come back to GH, Tristan Rogers! It’s time. Your granddaughter, Emma, needs you and most especially, RealLuke! You have to rescue your best friend from the clutches of Fluke. There are some fantastic stories that Robert could be part of if you were available.

    • Andrew Hass

I agree that now would be the perfect time for Robert to return on GH.With Anna and Duke having problems Robert could be there for Anna.Plus there’s still the mystery of what Anna and Robert did to Faison. Then there’s the fake Luke story.Maybe it could be revealed that the fake Luke arranged for Ethan to get into trouble so that Robert would go help Holly because he knew Robert would be able to tell that he wasn’t the real Luke.Plus Robert has a history with the Cassadines. So there’s a lot for Robert to do and give Tristan Rogers a lot of material as an actor.

    • Harlee

Please take him, Colin is worthless character and does nothing for YR.

      • Georgia

Thats because the writers for Y&R suck, there is lots of talent there but they loose it because of playing favorites……Summer being the very worst…..

        • sands of time

I believe they are making Summer the central character of Y&R. She already had clout when MM was fired.

        • sands of time

The actress that plays Summer has the power to get rid of more actors. She rates!

  • JayTN

I hear a lot of complaints about “new blood” on soaps as why ratings are down. “New blood” (new characters/actors) are necessary for soaps to continue. You can’t have the same old set of established characters driving the action…it has always been this way. The challenge is how the new characters/actors are assimilated into the soap, and that responsibility lies with the writing staff. Each soap has their new characters. Look at Jordan and Ben on “Days”. You’ve got Ava and Nathan and Maxie’s hippy roommate on GH. B&B has Quinn and Wyatt. There are many others, as well.

I don’t mind some of the newbies on Y&R…I actually like the character of Stitch and the triangle between him, Victoria and Billy. Others, not so much. Rumor has it that had she not been fired, Maria Arena Bell was going to kill of Sharon in the summer of 2012. Adam better get back soon, because Chelsea doesn’t have anything else to do except cause trouble for everyone else. Avery (whom I believe was made Phyllis’ sister after the fact) doesn’t really serve a purpose either. All of the soaps have too much “dead weight”…characters that don’t really add anything (GH made a big deal about Lucas coming back and then is only shown once a week…if that). I believe that soaps would be better served to have smaller casts. It could firm up the writing and allow actors more time in front of the camera.

    • TV&MovieBuff

I don’t mind new characters when the characters are fleshed out and you are given time to get to know them well. But the writers these days don’t even do that with old characters so there is no hope for new characters. And I definitely don’t like a bunch of new characters or new faces in a short amount of time.

    • David

Really Lucas was on numerous times per week the ls few weeks including being shot due to Julian try to leave the mob but I guess you watch a different version of GH than the rest of us

      • JayTN

No, I’m watching the same GH as everyone else. According to Ryan Carnes’ Wikipedia page, he returned to GH on January 17, 2014. Since then, thru the end of April, Carnes has appeared in 18 episodes (4 in January, 6 in February, 7 in March and just once in April). The May episode count hasn’t been posted yet, but I do know that he took part in the Nurses Ball, so his count for May is probably closer to February & March than April. However, after skimming recaps for GH last week, it seems that Lucas was only featured in one episode (June 2).

        • Andrew Hass

I just checked on another website and Ryan Carnes was on 8 or 9 episodes of GH in May.Plus he’ll be on later this week too.

    • nyvoter

Excellent post, Jay, I adopt it completely I also believe in new characters but, as you aptly express it, it is how the writers assimilate them into the existing cast. New characters bring new life, new blood, new opportunities … however, in certain cases …. i.e., imo, having Cbelsea at the very top of the episode counts for months now is disconcerting; I don’t watch Y&R any longer so maybe things are different now, but I never felt the character added that much, with or without Adam … a lot of huff, a lot of puff … certainly not worthy of top epi counts every month … a least that is my opinion. But on GH, I love Nathan, Ava, Madeline (who I realize has only a limited run but love her all the same) … and now I am hanging onto every word and action of Nina (portrayed by Michelle Stafford). I think all the soaps have talented actors, young and old; but it takes talented writers to keep s/ls moving along, drawing us in, keeping us in suspense (although not for over a year, LOL) and allowing their characters to gow and, in certain cases, to age gracefully. I’m sure many will disagree with me but Victor is too old to be as heavily involved in s/ls as he is … unless and until they are willing to pass the baton, as they say, the show will stiffle. And my final opinion … the baton should not be passed to Dylan. Well, lol, as least you have a sense of why I am no longer watching. But I absolutely love #GH and I support your post wholeheartedly. :)
