WHAT DO YOU THINK?
  • Andrew Hass

In a way it was a great week for GH.Yeah they lost 80,000 from the previous week but gained over 500,000 viewers from the same time last year.PLus in all 3 demos GH is in either 1st or 2nd place.

    • TV&MovieBuff

I don’t put as much emphasis on how much GH has been up from last year for the last few weeks as much as I would normally do.

Last June was when the OLTL-3 had returned to GH and Days was beating them often. In fact this week last year was one of those weeks. GH was 4th in total viewers. They were down to 2.4 million viewers and were down even lower than that the week before. This week last year they were at 2.4 but were up 117,000 from the previous week. So they were some of the lowest weeks GH had hit in quite some time or since.

      • Andrew Hass

I don’t put too much emphasis on the difference between this year and last year. However i do think it’s a good sign that this is the second straight week that GH has been over 3 million viewers and i don’t think that’s happened for a long time.

        • TV&MovieBuff

No that part has not happened in a long time. As a soap fan I am happy to see a soap do that even if I am not watching.

  • ttyl

For 25 years Y and R was #1 in every category until JFP came along and wrecked the show. Sad.

    • JayTN

I don’t know if Y&R was “#1 in every category” prior to JFP’s arrival, but it has been #1 in total viewers for 25 years, as it remains today.

      • Linda

If you know so much Jay how come I am hearing talk that The beloved soap is on the verge of cancelation?

        • JayTN

Well, CBS has renewed it thru the end of the 2016-17 season. I don’t put much credibility in internet scuttlebutt. I’ll believe CBS before I believe a faceless internet rumor monger.

        • Andrew Hass

Y&R was renewed by CBS through 2017.B&B on the other hand was only renewed through 2015.So that could be a sign of which soap CBS has more long term faith in.

        • Fox

Linda – CBS has no intention of cancelling Y&R in the near future (your “on the verge” remark. In order to do so, they would have to have something in the pipeline to replace it with. There are currently no new development projects in the works for the CBS daytime schedule. Just look at past examples: Before CBS canceled Guiding Light, industry trade papers had already reported that the network had been looking at new versions of LMAD and Pyramid for quite some time. LMAD eventually won the slot. Similarly, the then-unnamed talk show that Sara Gilbert was pitching to CBS (which became The Talk) was known about long before the official December 2009 announcement that CBS was canceling ATWT. IOW, because Y&R occupies a network hour, they can’t really cancel it until they know what they’re replacing it with.

          • JayTN

I remember CBS having the “Million Dollar Pyramid” pilot in the works (actually twice, I believe, to replace GL and ATWT; I believe the pilots were hosted by Dean Cain and Andy Richter). I know the GSN reboot of “Pyramid” didn’t last, but I would prefer a new “Pyramid” to LMAD. I’ve never been a big fan of LMAD, either the new version or the old Monty Hall hosted version (I caught a few episodes of that version on GSN).

        • Harlee

Linda, the show isn’t going to be cancelled, maybe your wishful dream. If YR got cancelled all the soaps would die quickly, if thinking everyone would jump to GH or DOOL wouldn’t happen. CBS will not let this happen trust me….

          • Patrick Ferrando

YR isn’t going anywhere any time soon.
            Days would go first.

    • Patrick Ferrando

YR has been second before in the18-49 demo.

  • Tommy Tune

    #fireJillFarrenPhelps. #bringbackKayAlden

  • Linda

Bring back Michael Muhney before it’s too late. this started When MM and BM left. Thanks JFP, the soap killer. The cast should plead for MM to return

    • JayTN

Actually, not true at all. The numbers for Y&R were still in the upper 4 million range (4.6-4.8 million) until the end of March. Those two actors left in late January. Instead of pleading for “MM” to return, it seems that the cast – and the producers – have moved on. Everyone, it seems, has moved on except for MM’s most rabid fans.

      • lucy2010

What matters is the 18-49 age group, and they’re down 250K (28%) viewers (and have been consistently down that much) since the last week MM and BM were there.

        • JayTN

That may be true for primetime, but different genres go after different age groups. For example, news programming focus on the 25-54 demographic.

To say that Y&R is down 250,000 (or 28%) in a particular demographic doesn’t give a true picture of the situation. I don’t normally pay much attention to the demographic numbers, but the only soap to see an increase from the last full week of January (1/24/14) to now (6/9/14) is GH (+15,000). All of the other soaps are down. “Days” is down 74,000 and B&B is down 85,000; while Y&R is down 213,000. While Y&R has lost the most, it also had the most to lose. If Y&R were the only soap down in the category it could be blamed on casting decisions, but that doesn’t explain the loses for B&B and “Days”.

          • Fox

CBS may be satisfied with a good 25-54F demographic, but they also want the show’s median viewer age to go down. And a viewer under the age of 34 can be worth 2-3X the ad rate a viewer over 54 is to them.

        • Andrew Hass

Since the week of January 27-31 which was the last week BM and MM was on all 4 soaps has lost viewers in the 18-49 demo.In viewers Y&R lost 325,000.B&B lost 143,000.GH lost 65,000 and DOOL lost 114,00.Now Y&R did lose the most by a large margin. Also the week of January 27-31 Y&R was above 2nd place B&B in that demo by 232,000 viewers and now they are in 2nd place.

      • Fox

No doubt Miller and Muhney’s exits have affected ratings. After all – they were two of the show’s lead male actors and big draws. But not all viewers who were attracted to Y&R because of them are going to just up and leave “in protest” the very same day or week they left. Some hang on till the boredom of what the show has become since they departed sets in, and they just can’t take it any more. Viewer attrition, even when it’s linked to a specific event or someone’s absence, is more often a gradual process. (Same things applies to viewer growth based on some new or returning actor who becomes popular.)

        • JayTN

After the Muhney firing was made public, there were many comments here and at TV By the Numbers (where soap ratings are also posted) saying that they would quit watching Y&R as soon as Muhney left. These people even predicted that the week after he left the ratings for Y&R would plummet. It is these same “rabid fans” that continue to call for Muhney’s reinstatement.

I don’t presume to believe that people who post on internet message boards (especially with the ability to easily create “sock puppets”) speak for all viewers, but to hear some of the Muhney fans tell it, they expected Y&R’s ratings to crater the Monday after he officially left. That didn’t happen, which is why I said that most viewers – except for Muhney’s most rabid defenders/fans – have moved on, in terms of dwelling on his departure and campaigning for his return. I agree that you can be a fan of Muhney, but not be fanatical about it. It could very well be these “soft” Muhney fans (people who watched Y&R for Muhney, but not solely for him) that are now becoming dissatisfied with Y&R for other reasons (i.e. the writing) and leaving.

    • http://unknown.com Bexx

I thought the cast hated him because of his amazing acting? No one except maybe Sharon Cast would ask that he return, and at this point why would she even bother?

      • JayTN

Sharon Case is probably just glad that she still has a job to go to, if you believe the rumors. According to rumors, Maria Arena Bell was going to kill off the character of Sharon during the summer of 2012, but Bell was let go before anything could happen.

I have nothing against either the actress or the character, but Sharon – the actress & character – doesn’t seem to have anything to do anymore. Perhaps it would have been better to follow thru with Bell’s plans…nothing like a good ol’ fashioned soap murder mystery.

    • Andrew Hass

I found this from an interview that Michael Muhney did with About.Com Soaps awhile ago. When asked if he doesn’t plan on staying at Y&R forever Michael said No because he’s not a lifer.Plus in the January issue of Soap Opera Digest it was reported that Michael’s contract was up for renewal at the end of 2013 but that the show had decided to let him go awhile ago.I know some posters have said he stayed an extra month but if his contract at he end of 2013 then he just stayed to fulfill his contract because the show would have had to pay him whether he worked or didn’t work

  • JayTN

The good news for Y&R is that this is the first time since the weeks of Jan. 20 & 27 that it has seen an increase for two consecutive weeks. This recent decline started in early April, so Y&R isn’t going to go back up overnight. It will take weeks, and perhaps even months to return to were it was earlier this year.

A troubling sign, perhaps, is that Y&R had its lowest day on Friday (but so did “Days” and GH). In fact, “Days” and Y&R had about the same amount of decline from Monday to Friday. I don’t know what happened on GH on Monday, but that is a steep drop (500,000+) from Monday to Tuesday. The good news is that the rest of the week was largely stable.

    • Andrew Hass

GH had the largest decline from Monday to Friday of all the soaps. On Monday they 3,406,000 viewers and on Friday they had 2,795,000 viewers. So that is a loss of 611,000 viewers. However GH is the only soap that had gains in total viewers and in all 3 demos from the same time last year.Plus i think GH was interrupted a little by Obama for one day that week.So that could have affected the ratings. Also i think GH has mostly done bad on Fridays for some reason.

      • JayTN

I thought that the Obama interruption was this week?

        • nyvoter

Yes, this week (yesterday) and also that week; these preemptions between GH and Days are coming every other week … at least for us on EST

      • Elizabeth_Erwin

YET another soap actor from a different show has hijacked all the screen time. CHOMP CHOMP

    • sands of time

DAYS was shown in different time slots in some markets due to golf.

  • ROBNYC

The big story I am seeing here is that BB maintains its own audience even on the days YR dropped off. They have always consistently been about a full point behind YR but Friday they were just half a point away from #1 in total viewers. BB may be the first half hour show to hit #1 if they keep up the good work. Watching BB is like watching a primetime soap.

  • truth

The Daniel, Jennifer and Abbigail show really works for Days…lmaoooo

    • sands of time

Golf was on that Thursday and Friday. Some markets changed the time slots.

  • JayTN

All those Michael Muhney fans will absolutely HATE this bit of casting news. The site Celeb Dirty Laundry is reporting that the impending return of Eileen Davidson all but rules out the return of Mr. Muhney. Davidson has publicly supported Hunter King in the Muhney soap opera, as well as Phelps. So, CDL concludes that Davidson would not have signed a contract with Y&R to return only to have to work alongside Muhney. (I can’t post a link to CDL, but just google the site and search for the article.)

    • nyvoter

Jay, for the record, I do not think Michael Muhney is coming back, but CDL is a total rag that never gets anything right; it quotes from legitimate and illegitimate sources alike, and gets the simplest facts wrong. Their “conclusions” are simply nonsensical on so many issues, not limited to Y&R or MM … just looking for hits … and the mention of MM gets it for them. The hiring of ED has absolutely no bearing on any casting decisions that would be made (or not made) … you are a very legitimate poster, so I just want you to know what kind of source to which you are referring. :)

    • Fox

Oh surely, you don’t put any credence in the inane “conclusions” that CDL comes up with related to Y&R. Why do you think they put a question mark (“?”) after the majority of their headlines? The “reporting” at that website is more like creative writing.

      • Harlee

to funny Foxcrane…would you even call the website “creative writing” or “creative sh*t on a shingle”…hmmmm

        • Fox

Harlee – Thanks for the eloquent clarification of what I really meant. ;-)

    • TV&MovieBuff

I honestly don’t think most of the cast would want to work with Muhney. Many of them came out in support of King. I can’t blame them.

      • Barbara Rhyne

None of them can act like MM that’s the only reason they are jealous. Bringing back Ashley only makes me want to stay away even more if MM doesn’t return. Say what you want MM haters he is the best. Just a matter of time Y&R will go down. :)

        • TV&MovieBuff

Yep I’m sure that is it. I’m sure they cry their eyes out every time they cash their checks since they are still employed and have jobs.

        • Andrew Hass

I don’t think any of the actors at Y&R are jealous of Michael Muhney.Plus some of them have been on Y&R longer than Michael was.Which must mean they can act and maybe even better than Muhney does.Plus if Michael Muhney is just such a great actor which i think he is how come no other soap has tried to hire him?As for Y&R going down i don’t see that happening anytime soon because they have about 9,000 more viewers than 2nd place B&B does and it has been renewed through 2017.

        • http://unknown.com Bexx

You’re hoping for cancellation, yet you still want him to return? How is that possible if the show is gone?

    • http://unknown.com Bexx

It’s funny that now they don’t believe CDL, but considered it to be the gospel months ago when they claimed Hunter forced herself on Muhney.

  • TV&MovieBuff

Good to see Y&R have 2 weeks in a row that it is up some. But still I think the writing is on the wall for the writers. They are just not working. In the key demo I think we are like 8 or 9 weeks now with either a new low or tying a low. They either need to kick it in high gear or some change needs to be made.

I wish Sony would shift Lorraine Broderick over from Days and give her the head writers job. I think she might be a nice fit for Y&R. I loved her All My Children.

  • http://unknown.com Bexx

Bit sensational given the actual numbers.

  • Patrick Ferrando

Not all bad news for YR, as it was the ONLY soap UP in total viewers for the week.
The demos didn’t look good for any of the shows.
But you know Phelps is nervous. Love it.

  • nyvoter

For me, #GH is a pure hour of “win” five days a week. And, yes, I do believe they were preempted in part one day that week, as well as this past week. Obviously, I am not alone in my enjoyment. #GH is increasing its viewership, including younger viewers … as others are dropping them … their numbers have been strong and continue to grow. Their s/ls are dynamic, their acting superb, its pacing pitch perfect … the only thing I find upsetting about the hour is how quickly it passes, LOL. I am beyond thrilled with Michelle Stafford’s character, Nina … everything moves so quickly, you barely have time to enjoy the excitement of the moment before a new dramatic moment unfolds. I would love to see Billy Miller join #GH (and I do believe he will) in any role … and, yes, if the day comes that Michael Muhney joins them, I will surely celebrate. These are three extremely, extremely talented actors … and I would like to enjoy all three of them on the most exciting daytime drama. Bravo, #GH … once again, well done … well done, indeed.

  • Sandy I

Days seems to be on shaky ground and with Alison and James’ imminent departure Days are going to have to pull something out of the bag or it won’t make it to 2016 which is when Days have been extended to. Good luck Days you’ll need it.

    • Nick DeLuca

DAYS needs another shakeup – they’re doing some things well but they need to move the stories along much faster to keep people tuning in.

  • sands of time

Congrats to Eileen Davidson (Lead Actress), Eric Martsolf (Supporting Actor) and Chandler Massey (Younger Actor)…Winners from “Days of our Lives”!!!

Congrats to OLTL for Best Directing!

Congrats to Y&R for Best Writing and Daytime Drama!!

And congrats to all the other winners!!!!!

It looks like JFP is not going anywhere!!!

  • sands of time

Does anyone have a clue as to what happened when it showed the wedding clip of Wilson instead of Chandler Massey’s younger actor reel?

  • sands of time

Was it just me or did others experience a lot of buffering during the emmys?

  • David

I just read that Kimberly Mccullough will be returning as Robin to GH for the summer. Sadly her stay is only for the same as she is still pursuing her directing career. But she will be on this summer. I am guessing to usher Billy Miller in as Jason but we shall see

    • Andrew Hass

Kimberly is reportedly directing a movie in September. However until then she could do GH for a couple of months.Yeah Robin’s return probably has to do with Jason at lreast at the beginning but she still could interact with Patrick,Emma and other characters on the show as the story progresses.

      • David

I am sure she will interact in them in some form as they do need to give some closure to her and Patrick if she isnt going to be around.
