The official cause of death for David Gail, 58, the former “Port Charles” and “Beverly Hills, 90210” actor who died last month after being found unresponsive by emergency personnel, has been determined, reports Deadline via a statement released by the late actor’s mother, Mary Painter.

According to a toxicology report, Gail’s cause of death has been determined to be the result of “brain and heart complications following drug intoxication involving amphetamines, cocaine, ethanol and fentanyl,” the outlet reported on Friday. The causing condition was anoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (a brain injury due to lack of blood flow) following resuscitation from cardiopulmonary arrest due to drug intoxication.

Following reports of Gail’s death, TMZ, citing law enforcement, reported that the actor died of a possible drug overdose, with his death under investigation by police, pending toxicology testing. No foul play was suspected.

In a statement released to Deadline at the time, the actor’s publicist told the publication that Gail had been found “unresponsive by emergency personnel who made every attempt to save his life including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation. Despite their efforts, Gail was put on life support where he remained for several days. He was pronounced dead on January 16, 2024.”

The statement went on to say, “The family has no reason to suspect the cause of his death was anything but heart failure.”

David Gail’s Mom Speaks Out

With toxicology results now in, Gail’s heartbroken mother, Mary Painter, recently told Deadline, “It breaks my heart to learn that my son died this way.” She adds, “David became reliant on medicine many years ago, after multiple surgeries on his hands and wrists. He lived in enough pain to prevent him from working for almost a decade, with relief only achieved through full disability, physical therapy and pain medicine. He struggled to stop taking pharmaceuticals and did before turning toward a more Eastern pain management including acupuncture and natural medicines. I can only assume that his former opioid dependence played a part in self-medicating from uncontrolled sources.”

While there was nothing that could be done to prevent her son’s death, Painter hopes that his passing helps shed some light on the numerous “innocent victims of pharmaceutical addiction and the fentanyl epidemic that has taken so many of our sons and daughters.” That said, she would like people to keep her son and others battling pain or dependence in their thoughts and prayers, with the hope that one day the fentanyl epidemic will become no more.

Born February 27, 1965 in Tampa, Florida, Gail first made a name for himself in Hollywood with roles in such shows as “Growing Pains,” “Doogie Howser, M.D.,” “Murder, She Wrote” and “Matlock.” In 1992, he landed a regular role as Danny Burke in the short-lived NBC drama series “The Round Table,” which also starred “Days of our Lives” actress Stacy Haiduk.

Before playing Stuart Carson on “Beverly Hills, 90210” over a seven-episode arc during the show’s fourth season, which aired from 1993-1994, Gail made his first appearance on the show during its first season as a character named Tom, which Gail talked about when he appeared as a guest on the “90210” podcast in April 2021.

As Stuart, the character was set to marry Brenda Walsh (Shannen Doherty) after an impromptu dash to Las Vegas when she was 18, and he was 24, and the two had only known each other for three weeks. Although the wedding was ultimately canceled, the pair remained friends until a few episodes later when Stuart showed his true colors to Brenda and they parted ways.

In addition to “Beverly Hills, 90210” and “The Round Table,” Gail also appeared in another Aaron Spelling-produced series, playing Dean Collins on “Savannah,” where he appeared in all 34 episodes of the drama series, which ran for two seasons on The WB. By 1999, Gail was hired to play a recast Dr. Joe Scanlon on the ABC daytime drama series “Port Charles,” which would become Gail’s last regular role. He remained with the show for just about a year before the series again recast the character with actor Alex Mendoza.

Gail’s other credits include such shows as “V.I.P.,” “ER,” “JAG,” and more recently, voicing multiple characters in the 2019 video game “Blacksad: Under the Skin,” among other roles.
