‘SNL’ Parodies Soapy Drama with ‘Marrying Ketchups’

No stranger to parodying soap operas, the most recent episode of “Saturday Night Live” (January 25, 2020) with host Adam Driver added to its arsenal of hysterical drama that would normally be found only on one of the ABC, CBS or NBC soap operas, or a telenovela.

In the segment “Marrying Ketchups,” Driver plays Wyndmere who professes his love to Wanda (played by Cecily Strong), only to be rejected by her following her reveal that not only is she not a ketchup bottle but she’s also cheating on him with a Cholula hot sauce bottle (played by Kyle Mooney). Apparently, the spice is better. Later, we learn that Wanda and Cholula had a little packet together (reference for baby) and that Wyndemere himself had a fling with Vinegar, who isn’t shown, as the two “double-teamed” in honor of fish and chips. Wanda admits she knew about the fling as she had gone through his phone.

Despite all the fun, the drama is all made up by Jeraldine (played by Heidi Gardner), a waitress at Lily’s Diner who was asked by her boss to “marry the ketchup” bottles. She just happened to take things a little too literal.

In case you didn’t have enough Adam Driver, here are some other memorable clips from his episode.
