Great job, Dena & Ryan. You’ve alienated every fanbase & blown up every ship that was remotely liked on Days. The only surprising thing is last week’s weather induced fluke of a bump. Ron has his work cut out for him.

  • Salem Spectator

I figured the ratings would go down after a big increase, but I was hoping not this much. The soaps have been seeing a lot of record lows lately. The end could be near.

    • robert

the creative has to get better or this genre will die

  • robert

daytime soaps are in a sad state right now. all of them suck. the writers need to step it up

  • George

Really terrible ratings for Days. Ron won’t have a chance. Every character or couple that had fans talking has been torn to bits, written off or killed off by the last 3 writing teams. Days was making ground with youngish couples and they went back to the same recipe they always use which is the old couples. For instance Marlena is supposed to have a fantasy about John soon. I know Marlena is loved but she’s 70. 70!! Really Days? Is that the best you got in romance? A 70 year old woman fantasizing about a 63 year old man? I’ll pass. Steve and Kayla knocking boots or frumping about with their new son while covering up their other son’s murder rap is also not my idea of a good time. Days has one of the hottest guys Eric making sexy with another older woman Jennifer. How bout Days goes the opposite way and try a younger woman for Eric. They can’t because they’ve made all the younger woman crazy stalkers, delusional idiots or criminals. Hope used to be one of the main faces of Days but I’m sick of looking at her face because she’s a hypocrite, criminal and stuck with the biggest s for brains Rafe. UGH!! What’s the point of the Hernandez family? If it’s diversity they want they need to find a better solution to that. They are all criminals and not worth rooting for. July seems like a pipe dream. There isn’t going to be anything left of Days come July. Thanks Ken! Thanks Dena!

    • Tammy Bostick

oh my you said it perfectly rafe is a joke and i was a fan of hope and bo since the beginning but hope has been turned into an idiot she needs to take a break!!! corday destroyed his parents great show what an idiot

  • Soraya Montenegro

    Holy moly.

What the heck is going on with all these shows? It’s like they have done worst in 3 months 2017 than all of 2016.

Every week there is a new low and more lost viewers. Between the writing woes and Sean Spicer/45 administration cutting in soap hours these shows can’t buy a break.

They had the bump thanks to the show week last week and the show but they came back to earth and then some.

I give it two yrs all these shows will be gone if they keep up these pathetic numbers.

    Sad.

    • Vendi Smith

      Trump.

ABC can’t go a single week without breaking into GH.

      • Soraya Montenegro

I tell you what 45 is going to kill soaps and he’s doing so. Who knew having a buffoon like Sean Spicer get up every day between the hours of 12pm – 2Pm could be so entertaining than a damn soap opera.

        • Vendi Smith

          Spicer, too.

The daily press briefings are taking away from daytime soap viewership.

          • Soraya Montenegro

With the state of our country, I understand why many soap viewers are paying attention to politics. I get it. Scary time. You can’t miss a thing with this administration. Then like I said you will have some causal soap viewers who whether watch Spicer’s tomfoolery since soaps are giving viewers nothing to stick around for in terms of storytelling.

          • Dan O’Malley

Geeze, sounds like you both are in dire need of safe spaces.

          • Soraya Montenegro

oops i forget Trump supporters are quite sensitive

          • Dan O’Malley

If you have any bona fide “facts”, I’m open to hear them…..

          • Dan O’Malley

            Crickets…….

          • jonboy

If you want to talk politics take it elsewhere, please.

          • Soraya Montenegro

I’ll do you a solid and block you.

  • Vendi Smith

“NOTE: There were pre-emptions on Friday”

GH was interrupted two seperate times on the West Coast last Friday (Health Care press conferences) but none of the other soaps were affected by that news break. The loss wouldn’t have been this extreme for the week if they did their usual number on Friday (2.5) so it still would’ve been down but not by that much. The demos might not have gotten hit that hard either. Los Angeles is arguably the largest television market in the country. You can’t tell me it doesn’t hurt if the show is interrupted in that city.

    • Keanna

Making excuses I see, nope GH has been terrible for MONTHS. How do you explain NOT being over 2.0 the rest of the week

    • Ang

      NYC is the largest market

  • Vendi Smith

B&B losing that many viewers during the week of their 30th anniversary is a big red flag. The ratings always see a big increase during these location shoots. CBS promoted the hell out of that trip to Australia. GH and DOOL saw a large bump in viewers for their 50th anniversary weeks in 2013 and 2015. B&B should’ve done way better than this just based on the nostalgia factor.

Y&R kicked off that week with a huge anticipated story (Chloe/Adam) so it’s very puzzling how they can lose that many viewers last week. The only entertaining thing happening on the canvas and was built well for all of last week’s shows. I guess they waited too long to finally address it like the Sully/Christian reveal.

    • monzo

It’s been Steffy’s & Liam’s third wedding, so you can’t expect anything huge. Also, they are no supercouple, just a couple. Ridge & Brooke are the supercouple of the show, so that Quinn drama should increase ratings next week, at least I hope this will happen…

    • Michelle

Well with B&B, the storyline was down right silly and stupid. The writing is awful. I believe the biggest mistake that they made was was posting photos from the location spot and telling what was going to happen. The viewers already knew what was going to happen, no reason to watch. They should have kept the whole story top secret.

  • Salem Spectator

For several years many people were hoping, predicting and asking for DOOL to be canceled and it will be eventually, but so will the others. The talk of DOOL’s fate created an awareness of the genre dying which kills it faster.

    Careful what you wish for.

    • Soraya Montenegro

No doubt I want the remaining soaps to last. However until the executives actually start getting creative they will continue to bleed out their numbers. It’s just a fact and reality. These people running the networks are itching to cut the final four off since the profits aren’t the same like the 80s and 90s. Soap fans also have more tv options and distractions than ever before. Not to mention the attention pans are shorter than 20-25yrs. Most Soap fans seem to want more instant gratification, pacing and better writing too. Lost stories seem to chase viewership away along with bad writing. There needs to be happy medium and balance. Plus character development needs to get better with new and vet characters. For example that Chloe and Nicole garbage is trash. The fact Chloe had to be character assassinated to make Nicole into a heroine is stupid.

  • jesse

That is the current new low for Days in 18-49 demo, sure they’ll have more.Good luck Ron working for Corday.GH is just a bad, their mob stories suck as much as Days. The couples aren’t interesting at all anymore.I watch Y&R and hope that it will be interesting with Adam’s death,Jordan/Hilary,Cane cheating.Of all the 4 soaps Y&R is easily the best.

    • monzo

Mob-free episodes of GH are good IMO, they should focus more on that. Viewers are used to the fact that Sonny, Carly and Jason get away with any crime, but the same is happening with Julian and Ava, so it’s kind of boring.

      • jesse

Nathan/Maxie are exciting for me,where are they.Nelle, the girl Charlotte are really boring.James Franco should have been the only actor to play that role imo.Finn’s story isn’t any good at all.

    • Tammy Bostick

was this thecweek we had to suffer with watching the rafe hooe nastiness which. i do not watch bc it’s disgusting dena has used. everybody to prop her pet galen and sorry he’s just boring !! hopes character has been ruined i know peter is done but i will always miss him and Bo. I can’t stand what they did to this show shame on corday and higley!!!

  • TruthSquad

Y&R has been good this week. The action is building. The last couple of weeks had been very slow but this week gives me confidence that there is even more excitement to come. Haven’t been back to B&B in a few weeks. Maybe next week.

    • charlie bracken

IA it has been very good, Loving how Nick is catching Chloe in her “lies” about Adam and this Book Scott is going to write about Victor should be interesting to watch.

      • TruthSquad

The Chloe reveal also brings new questions to the fate of Adam.

        • charlie bracken

          yes it does

  • Bantilau Regnies

The Victoria show keeps dropping LOL.

    No balance.
Newman brats involved in every story.
Vets with no decent airtime (Paul? Neil? Christine? Phyllis? Sharon?)
Forced pairings (Chlovin, Chick, Villy, Deriah)
Short stories with zero build up (after months of “who is Adam?” we have to believe that detective Nick was suspicious about Chloe? LOL)
History rewritten (Nick HATED Adam, stop the “my brother” BS)

Sally is the savior YR needed lmao

    • FoxyRoxyy

Look at those losses Y&R has from last year. The show is still very boring and still at its all time low in 18-49’s. The viewers continue to reject Sally’s lifeless writing.

    • Eileen

Agreed. Devon and Mariah have zero chemistry and look like two friends trying to make someone jealous. The whole story with Jill ended up being pointless because instead of kicking Colin to the curb, she pulled a 1950s Doris Day move and took him back???

      • charlie bracken

actually I like Devon with Mariah they make a cute couple IMO.

      • Bantilau Regnies

Devon and Mariah, Billy 6.0 and Victoria 3.0, Nick and Chelsea, Chloe and Kevin… Sally is chemistry phobic.

    • padange

They should rename this show “V&R” (Victoria and the Rest) LOL.
She is the centre of the show despite the fact that she has no story. The other characters/couples getting airtime are:
      Hevon & Co
      Lane & Co.

Y&R’ ratings show that the formula isn’t working; why aren’t they changing anything? They are adamant to feed the viewers with the content the audience doesn’t want to see. What are they aiming at?

      • Michael Taylor

I still hope Y&R will be renewed past September 2017. They haven’t made a formal announcement yet.

        • padange

It’s kind of scary but maybe they are waiting until CBS buys SONY Pictures?

          • Michael Taylor

How do you know about this?

          • padange

There were some articles about that (eg.
“Is CBS Interested in Acquiring Sony Pictures?” (TVweek); “Analyst: CBS-Sony Pictures merger a good fit for both” (Variety) etc.).

They call it rumors but there’s no smoke without a fire.

  • Derrick

    I’m just SPEECHLESS right now!

  • Ang

Predictable drop for Days. The NCAA tournament and the bad weather helped them two weeks ago. Dena’s special brand of writing brought them back to reality last week.

BB is awful. Thorsten Kaye needs to go. There’s nothing appealing about him or his depiction of Ridge.

GH – it’s off the rails IMO. Jelly need to go. They have no idea what they’re doing.

YR is actually good for the most part. It’s just not very exciting.

    • ctshar

well said for GH, truly off the rails by Jelly. Ron had burnout after a strong creative run for a few years, jelly are just phoning in their story lines and creating the most sexist male dominated show on TV. Disturbing stuff.

B&B – hopefully they’ll focus on thomas and the avants, the steffy and ridge/brook stuff is a true bore. Eric’s great in business, but whomever put him as a romantic lead/triangle needs their head examined. I like thorsten, but the recast doesn’t work well, not sure why, but you’re right.

    • Amie

I’m soo agree.I miss the actor who play Ridge.I want him back.Yayy Y&R is getting good now Chloe is about to be expose now Nick finally founds out

    • Carmel Smith

I like TK but he is not Ridge. The writers just do whatever with him.

  • Jen

Plain and simple all soap ratings have been down since the inauguration and Spicer’s daily briefings began. I’ve seen so many soap fans saying they’re watching those live and then watching their soaps at a later time like catching up on weekends. But just like with the OJ trial a real life soap is taking viewers away from the actual soaps.

    • FoxyRoxyy

I don’t know of anyone who watches Spicer’s briefings, but I do know many who have stopped watching Y&R because it’s boring.

      • Jen

There’s a discussion right now on another soap message board about ratings and a few people just in that thread mentioned watching Spicer daily. I’ve also seen it plenty of other places too.

      • ctshar

I agree, that’s just people bored looking for something else to watch. If not spicer, it’d be HGTV. I watched an ep of Y&R a bit waiting for the doctor, Y&R had some lame pairings and felt slow. Very fixable.

    • AvalancheDog

You are correct. The ratings for Spicer’s daily briefing have spike so much that all 3 cable news networks carry it live. It’s funny that you mentioned OJ trail because I see the same effect. And cable news is up across the board day/prime, which is unprecedented after an election.

  • Happy Accidents

    DENA’s DAYS: The Brutal Stats!

    • Amie

Its a huge mess.Im glad that I didn’t watch Days anymore and not much of GH

  • Paul

Sony said in a recent survey Sami and EJ are sorely missed so why they are not doing something about it. It still not may solve Days problems i think its late to save this show ratings have hit super low and we still months of Dena’ crap left but with some big returns coming back that fans truly want to see come back Days may have a fighting chance what is there is to lose.

    • lulu

Leave James and Ali and their dool characters alone ! These actors deserve better for one and secondly these characters deserve better than this awful writing/tptb who did everything in their power to destroy them !

      • Paul

Lulu i was a Ejami fan one of their biggest fans ever believe it or not some of us still want Sami and EJ to reunite for real. I know they destroyed their them in the end but this writer is a new one may be he can fix it i am sorry but i still want to see them come back even if its only for a short while.

        • lulu

i prefer them away than being destroyed even more..nah..enough is enough..these losers did too much damage, i don’t trust them..they made their bed, they can lie on it. End of story.

          • lulu

And i am far from alone to think that…This soap is not capable to write complex storytelling and complex characters.

  • Dawn

But….but…. but… I though Jelly was bringing GH back.

Yeah. Those GH ratings are horrendous.

  • Amie

Uh Oh Dang GH and Days. Its s the worst. They need to get together or else. Its nice to see Y&R went up in demos. They are in trouble

  • FoxyRoxyy

Just warning you ahead of time of the HUGE year to year losses coming next week. Y&R will be down about 800,000 viewers year to year. Sally Sucks and her writing is SO boring!!

  • sherwood

Another bad week for Y&R under the Young/Sussman team. This show just continues to sink. Demos are horrific and the show is a disaster. BTW, if Chelsea is such an accomplished con, why is she so stupid about her husband’s killer? If Adam’s dense brother Nick can figure it out, you’d think the little grifter could too. Such BS.

    • FoxyRoxyy

A disaster is the best way to describe Y&R these days.

      • Michael Taylor

What will Y&R’s future hold for us?

        • James Michael

Unless a reversal in ratings in the next few months, definitely a new head writer and maybe a new Exec Producer that’s what. We have to suffer through this just like we’ve done in the past. CBS will suffer with lower revenues and will take action. The problem is every time these writer changes implode, they lose viewers that never return or find better things to do with their precious time. Bold & Beautiful’s position as a leading drama around the WORLD, keeps it safe.

  • lookitsMegRyan

At least y & r is no longer starring a portrait on the wall. It’s getting much better.

  • Salem Spectator

Good news for General Hospital fans:

GH will surpass ATWT for the second longest lived US daytime soap ever if it lives through most of September of this year! Also, GH will celebrate it’s 55th anniversary on April 1st of next year, soap gods willing!

    • ctshar

Same SOLE HW jean who trashed ATWT the last two years to force cancellation is now co-HW of GH. I hope GH fires her before she does the same to GH.

  • Salem Spectator

B&B is the last soap I would ever want to watch, but I’m upset it didn’t gain viewers for it’s 30th anniversary, indicative of the genre dying.

    • Brawny

Maybe you can learn a thing or two?

    • ctshar

The stories were just boring, and couples like liam/steffy and nuRidge/Brooke lack chemistry. Missing avants and the only interesting part was the aussie background.

The 30th show had a lovely last scene, but not much else. If I ever get insomnia, I’ll look for a clip of steffy/liam, LOL.

  • Salem Spectator

Y&R will turn 45 March 26th of next year, but will it have special storylines marking the milestone and who will have the honor of writing it?

    • JayTN

Most people don’t celebrate a 45th anniversary. The next special event for Y&R will probably have to wait for the 50th anniversary.

    • Cocksucker

      Can I suck you off?

  • FoxyRoxyy

I’m calling it right now:The Julie Chen Show on CBS will replace Y&R.

    • Salem Spectator

Julie Chen is getting a new show?

      • FoxyRoxyy

If her hubby has anything to say about it, yes.

    • Hornydog

      I’m calling it. You’re a biotech and a slut.

    • Dianne

I just read that Julie Chen will be guesting for May Sweeps.
I’m not sure by your comment if you already knew this.
Anyway, now worries about YR ratings now.
Julie Chen will definitely lift them. LOL!!!!!!!

    • jonboy

Are you on crack? Its still the highest rated daytime drama.

      • Salem Spectator

It’s the highest rated soap, but most of the soaps are on different networks playing by a different set of rules. Y&R has had big losses lately and surely are facing budget cuts that they may not be able to adjust to. All the soaps are in trouble. If TPIR and LMAD go to 90 minutes each, most likely Y&R will end on CBS, but may go to all access.

        • soaprealityfan

I am sure that people wrote last week that YR will not be going to all-access anytime soon. There has to be SOMETHING airing on the actual network during the day.

      • FoxyRoxyy

Don’t forget why the soaps were replaced over the years – because game and talk shows are so much cheaper to produce, therefore more profitable. THe Talk may be CBS’ lowest rated show, along with Lets Make A Deal, but in the long run they are more profilable than the soaps. Research it. And we all know Moonves has no love for the soaps.

        • Salem Spectator

You are absolutely right. Moonves would lasso the moon for his wife. He already axed a soap for her.

          • FoxyRoxyy

And she’s guesting on Y&R. Probably to test drive the timeslot.

  • Carmel Smith

YR is a mess. Nick is confiding in Sharon. He said, You know I trust you. 👀 Crazy. Jack is drinking in front of Nikki. She didn’t say one word. The stories are starting on a Monday and within two weeks they are over. Victoria is on everyday talking about nothing. Just crazy.

    • charlie bracken

IMO the show isn’t a “mess” Nick talking to Sharon about his fears that Chloe did In fact Kill Adam was good I see nothing wrong with him talking to her she is the mother of his kids. At least the stories are not moving at snails pace they are moving a little quicker then usual. IMO the show it self has been Good. The fans are too Nit picky

      • Carmel Smith

That relationship needs to be rebuilt. That was unrealistic.

    • TV&MovieBuff

Nick and Sharon once loved each other and have children together. I absolutely see nothing wrong with them finally moving them into a more mature relationship. I’m not ready for Nick/Sharon round 100 but have no problem with them being friends and part of each others lives. It’s mature and is needed.

      • Carmel Smith

I don’t have a problem with the them being friends, but that whole “I trust you,” was a bit much.

        • James Michael

Especially since a few months ago Nick was so angry about his unstable ex-wife stealing his son and how he could never forgive or trust her again. The moment Sussman took over all of that anger suddenly vanished. She is writing for folks of her era. Slow, slow, slow. You see ratings are going down each week. Don’t think Y&R’s ratings slide hasn’t impacted B&B’s. Less holdover audience from Y&R is showing. I wonder how long CBS will tolerate this. Young people are not watching these shows. I guarantee you the positive comments from those loving what she’s writing are over 50 years of age. Long timers may like what she does but after the over the top stories of the last few years, folks are not getting with this. The ratings prove it.

Nick and Sharon as friends is kind of how it would have been if the characters were not led astray for a few years there. I liked seeing them together.

Is BB’s drop despite it being there 30th anniversary really a surprise? How many past vets did the show bring back for it’s occasion? I notice DOOL bringing back past favourites, I think in BB’s case a lot of past vets don’t want anything to do with the show. (just a feeling). As for another location shoot, it doesn’t cover up repetitive storylines. Was it just last year that Steffy married Wyatt?

    • TV&MovieBuff

None of the shows that I remember did anything really special for 30th anniversary occasions of shows. They usually do 25th, sometimes 40th, and 50th. But even when budgets were big they didn’t spend a lot on anniversary episodes in way of returning guests. Plus B&B lost many of the former vets due to budget cuts and stuff, and many of the ones you would want to see return their characters are dead. And I so tired of stories of ghosts, dopplegangers, and returns from the dead. Give me some more stories featuring the Avants, less of the new Spectra stuff, and bring back Thorne and I would happy.

      • Dianne

Bell hates Thorne. That is a big part of why he killed of his daughter Ally, so Thorne wouldn’t have any reason to come back. Apparently killing of all his wives wasn’t enough.

    • JayTN

For the most part, B&B’s central core of characters has remained the same since day one. Stephanie Forrester was killed off, Sally Spectra is still alive while the irreplaceable actress who played the part is dead. With most of those main/central players still with the show, there wasn’t too many characters to bring back for any kind of 30th anniversary shindig that producers could have thrown.

      • Dianne

While Brooke and Eric have been on since the beginning, almost every other actor only joined BB in the last decade or so. There is a major gap of missing characters.
I think the only reason Sally is alive is because Bell had already killed of Macy and Darla onscreen before Darlene Conley died. Also the actor who played Saul also had died. My point is by the time DC died, most of the characters who would mourn her death the most were already gone. When the late Bill Bell wrote BB, there were a few stories going on at once. It’s his son who only always writes for the same characters.

        • TV&MovieBuff

The bad thing about a 30 minute soap is that either characters stay much longer than they should and get stale, or they keep them around and recast them if the actors choose to leave. That is what happened a lot with ABC’s Ryan’s Hope. So many of the principal leads were recast and got so stale. But every time they tried to incorporate a new family, it usually failed as the audience wanted to see the Ryan family. So the same set of characters were written for over and over.

Despite great help, Brad Bell has never been great at sustaining any characters too long as new ones he seems to get bored with after awhile and they slowly fade out of sight.

As to some of the characters you mentioned as being gone, I had gotten tired of some of them and others had too. I personally have loved the way he shifted to a new generation as I got tired of the Brooke/Ridge gang and felt they needed to move to support. But at the same time Bell has tired them out as well with endless triangles like he did the older set. To me the bright spots in recent years have been the Avant family but again they are featured off and on.

It is hard to get a read on “Days” ratings. One can get whiplash looking at their week-to-week numbers. Last week they had their best week since back in January and now they follow that up with the worst week of the entire season. (You have to go back to July 2016 to find a week with fewer viewers.) While they will not be airing back-to-back, I wonder if Megyn Kelly’s new daytime talker – airing in place of the 9am hour of “Today” – can funnel more viewers into “Days”.

    • soaprealityfan

well trending downward would be the ultimately correct take on things overall.

I wasn’t a fan of Jelly’s writing for Y&R but I like them more and more on GH. The Valentin story is great, I love it. Great chemistry between JPS and MS and FH too.

Not this week, but usually GH also has lesser losses than other soaps in w18-49.

    • TruthSquad

I have been enjoying GH a lot this month.

  • FoxyRoxyy

Bad, bad bad writing for Y&R. Nick is all of the sudden a private eye? Why would Chloe now put the gun in the trash and Nick sees her? Just plain and simple bad writing. Even Eric Braeden, on his book tour, is telling fans how bad Sally’s writing is.

    • Dianne

I take it Eric Breaden/Victor isn’t featured enough? Is that why EB is commenting on someone’s writing – because his character isn’t the center of attention anymore. LOL!!!
Bad writing was also back about a decade ago when Victor’s sperm was part of a storyline that went on and on. Did EB comment on the bad writing then?
My point is that it’s hard to take what EB says seriously.

It is sad to say, but at least there is not one soap gaining viewers or increasing ratings wise. The executives and writers need to come up with something new and vibrant to attract viewers. This formula is not working. The stuff that Dena tried to do on Days did not catch on. Action and darkness did not attract viewers. Diversity and modern day story telling(gay couples). Silly plot storylines with quick fixes, teen scenes, etc. All soaps are losing viewers, not being able top viewers or bringing new viewers on. Is there anyone in the TV industry tha

    • JayTN

According to ABC’s most recent press release touting the ratings for “The View”, there are only two daytime series that have increased their viewership compared to last year. The release didn’t mention what the other series is, but “The View” is one of them. Since ABC didn’t mention the other series, it is likely on CBS (since NBC’s only daytime series are “Days” and the 9am & 10am hours of “Today”).

Jay, it seems that now in the television landscape as a whole not only are new soaps huge risks likely to turn a loss, but nearly ANY television show replacement. It used to be that putting on a talk show would be cheaper and more profitable, but obviously replacing DAYS with a talk show on NBC simply wouldn’t yield enough higher profit to warrant the cancellation. Maybe the networks see the backlash wouldn’t justify a very slight increase in ratings or profitability. ratings are going down for primetime too.

        • JayTN

I don’t know how much backlash NBC would get by canceling “Days”, which sometimes struggles to get over 2 million viewers. We aren’t talking Bill O’Reilly style numbers here.

          • Ang

I think any backlash would be short lived. Once the cancellation is announced, it would get a lot of buzz on social media for a few days. Then it would get quiet for months…Then a few weeks before the last episode the buzz would build again. Then the last show would air, people will be sad and then move on.

The only reason Days is even on is because NBC can’t get their act together with their Daytime lineup. If any of the cancelled shows had been successful, Days would have been gone by now IMO.

  • soaprealityfan

People were excited that last report had Days go from 1.6 to 1.69… well they dropped to 1.57 now in households, with nearly a record low in 18-34 demo too.
