  • charlie bracken

Nice too see Y&R remain steady, They can’t seem to get the 18-34’s Up for some reason. But the show it self Has been Good.

    • padange

I think W18-49 is a big problem. I think Y&R is only +6,000 from their all time low and it’s Winter when ratings usually are better than in Spring and Summer.
What a bad year for all soaps. I wonder if Nielsens’ ratings modeling has something to do with this.

      • charlie bracken

Right But Y&R’s demos Have been for a long time now even after Pratt left and sally took over their demos Have either gone up or they keep hitting record lows each week. But at least their Hh’s remain steady which good.

        • sherwood

The demos are a disaster and that means revenues are going to be down. CBS is discounting ad rates and they are going down as these numbers take a toll on ad sales. The show is as dull as dishwater.

          • charlie bracken

“dishwater” is it now Get real the show it self has been Good lately given what we had two years ago remember His Name is Pratt?! Given that their demos have been like this since sally and Kay returned last December is not their fault. Every show hasn’t seen a decent Gain in their Demos in months, so Making a Claim that the show is “duller then Dishwater” is IMO In Bad taste.

          • padange

I can totally understand why long time fans don’t like Pratt but his ratings were surprisingly very good. LOL

          • charlie bracken

True his “numbers” were good in the beginning But he didn’t have a good set of demos either.

          • padange

Unfortunately, target demo numbers (and in most cases total viewership) are in decline for all the network shows (scripted, unscripted, daytime and primetime). It’s very rare to have even small increases these days. Better (or at least stable) totals help them to have lesser losses IMO.

          • charlie bracken

IA even with all the cable network news channels that isn’t helping the cause either.

  • Secret Squirrel

I’ve been enjoying Y&R now that it’s gotten more family focused. I’ve also been loving me some Gloria since she returned, especially her scenes with Jack.

    • sherwood

Gloria is the ONLY bright spot on Y&R. At least she gives you an excuse to laugh at the crap that Sussman and Young are putting on. So hard to believe this is the best they can do. It’s February sweeps and nothing looks compelling….nothing.

    • charlie bracken

Same here at least it isn’t all over the place like it was before

  • TV&MovieBuff

Not a great week but not a really bad one either.

Sad to see Y&R drop in every category. The Friday number not good at all.

    B&B had a mixed week.

Days dropped in every category this week. Every time that show even gives me some kind of spark of interest they always kill it these days with a spoiler. I was kind of getting excited for the Julie story but today’s spoiler concerning that story just ruins it for me. Not interested in seeing that part at all.

    • Salem Spectator

The spoiler you’re referring to must be about Julie’s son, right? I had wondered how they were going to write the storyline without David.

    • monzo

I’m looking forward to Days’ ratings including Joseph Mascolo’s final appearance! By the way, why was Stefano arrested? Wasn’t he a free man when Hope shot him? I can’t remember mentioning why he should have gone to prison this time.

      • lalu

Stefano (really Shane in a mask) didn’t say a word. He had three visitors in his jail cell (Rafe, Anna, and Marelna) which all looked like they were talking to a brick wall because there was no verbal or physical interaction. Anyways, Shane was wearing a Stefano mask so it was not really Stefano that was captured. Most fans think this ending “sucked” for the character and I even read that some feel those were old clips of Stefano that the show edited for this current jail scene. Some tribute lol!! No wonder the show stayed quiet after his JM’s death about his last scenes until about a week ago (spoilers) because nothing they showed looked like anything they should be proud of or considered a tribute.

        • monzo

Thanks lalu, I saw those episodes, but I still don’t know why Stefano should have gone to jail. I get why fans are kind of angry, but I was relieved, to be honest, because I liked the idea that Stefano (who would have died of cancer soon) tricked Hope in killing him by telling her lies about his involving in Bo’s death. For me that story went down when Hope had to go to jail instead of getting free because she was insane for a few moments or something like that. I prefer Stefano really dead instead of being on the run forever, so Shane pretending he was Stefano is fine with me.

          • lalu

Thanks for sharing your take on the twist. For me, it is always nice to read other peoples opinion on a story-line. Perhaps, they wanted Stefano (really Shane) in jail for more witness’ and a place where they got the “tampered” blood work/fingerprints. This was all done so Hope can be released from prison. This weeks Preview has Hope attending Kayla’s and Steve’s wedding with Rafe.

  • FoxyRoxyy

CBS better do something about their #1 show. The first 2 days of sweeps are in the 4.4 million range? Yikes. The viewers are clearly rejecting Mal and Sally’s vision for the show. It’s February Sweeps, not February Sleeps.

    • Vendi Smith

Feb sleeps is right on the money. Snoozefest Sally was a terrible hire. Y&R is the cure for insomnia.

      • Michael Taylor

Is Y&R going to get renewed beyond September 2017, because its contract’s up for renewal this year.

    • robert

the show is boring. people wanna see action

      • jonboy

If I want action I will watch Criminal Minds.

    • monzo

Do I enjoy Y&R right now? Not really, but many viewers still do, so it remains the most watched soap. Y&R is getting trashed for years by longtime fans and critis, while B&B is called best soap for many seasons. Since B&B is Y&R’s lead-out I wonder why one million viewers turn off when B&B starts. Obviously Y&R is still entertaining most of the soap audience, while the so-called best show can’t catch them.

      • AvalancheDog

B&B is lead-out in only about 50% of country – local news usually follows Y&R and then B&B airs.

  • Happy Accidents

Days stumbles in the demos, hitting their fourth-lowest week of all time in Women 18-34: https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/ab4a1e34de257cabd55951f6c8253d33f6ff9fe0f170d423b4380cd422078486.png

  • Vendi Smith

GH is the only soap right now telling real drama with heavy stakes and it’s reflected in this good start to sweeps. Y&R has never been this boring and uneventful and Sally’s fluff stories and weak filler scenes is like watching paint dry. This woman’s writing is outdated and she doesn’t know that viewers want action. B&B is currently telling an embarrassing insulting Spectra revival and it is the worst example ever of a bad campy parody with terrible actors trying to mimmick the original actors. DOOL better get started on reboot number 67765 and that’s all that needs to be said about that show.

    • robert

i completely agree with B&B. the Spectra stuff has been horrible

      • monzo

Personally, I enjoy the Spectras and am a little sad that they are obviously not working, because it means they will continue telling these endless triangles (Liam/Steffy/Wyatt & Ridge/Brooke/Bill) all over and over again.

  • robert

those Y&R numbers are terrible. the show is so boring. Sally needs to come into the 21st century. bad pairings and all the stories are weak and have no stakes,as for B&B can’t say i’m surprised either. the Spectra revival has been terrible. i don’y like them bringing in all these new people when so many actors are being underutilized

    • FoxyRoxyy

Sally is no better than previous writers. Last week Sharon & Nikki were best friends bonding over the loss of Dullen, and now they are enemies again. Sally is just as guilty of incoherent, lack of vision, that Pratt was accused of. Y&R is so boring and obviously the viewers agree and are tuning out. 4.4 million viewers in a February sweep is pitiful. Angelica is gonna have alot of explaining to justify keeping her job after sweeps are over.

  • sherwood

I had to throw in the towel. Quit watching. I’ve been reading recaps of Y&R and B&B. Neither show is compelling. Y&R’s storylines are horrid. B&B is becoming unwatchable. CBS has two big problems that need fixing stat.

    • FoxyRoxyy

You said it. Angelica McDaniel must be reading Y&R scripts and watching the show – she’s asleep on the job. CBS has a big problem on their hands.

    • Restless Fan

The issues with Y&R have nothing to do with story but rather a very dull approach to soap opera by Mal Young. Y&R’s roots are in slowly plotted, character driven narration. The production was what helped elevate those meticulously plotted tales and make the show must see. Y&R is lacking, first and foremost, a compelling soundtrack. The classic scores dressed the writing up and in turn kept us engaged. Mr. Young has not only diminished the quantity of music used, but what they do use isn’t all that compelling. Jill Phelps dismantled the classic scores while Mal Young has further gotten away from music in general. I believe if the classic scores were put back into production today, the show would instantly come alive. Young is mistakenly trying to put British soap touches on Y&R and they just don’t work here. I give him credit for many things, but I find he’s a bit over rated. It’s clear his vision isn’t taking off. The higher ups need to be more firm on taking the back to its successful origins while keeping it fresh. As new blood goes, Young isn’t reinventing the American soap like Gloria Monty did. I strongly believe he’s the weak link here, not Sally Sussman. Youngs approach would have crippled William Bells writing. His producing style is not dynamic. It’s extremely sedate.

      • padange

I don’t think better music will help them with the ratings and from what I’ve seen increased production values don’t help much either. They also likely have (or will have) to deal with significant budget cuts, I think. So it’s not easy to improve things. It’s the storytelling that matters the most. IMO they have a small problem but it’s quite essential. There’s a lack of high stake drama. The stuff is too light. It almost looks like they are flat out avoiding to show serious conflicts on the show. Not sure why – maybe they are afraid to make characters look unlikeable. I think they came up with this “lighter” vision in Summer 2016, they started showing birthday parties, more children etc. But it doesn’t look like it is working well for the US audience.

        • FoxyRoxyy

The audience is rejecting Mal and Sally’s vision. The writing is dull and all over the place. You know the old saying…….’if it ain’t on the page’…….and it most certainly is not on the page right now. The show is boring. Music will not help. I’ve never heard anyone say that they watch a soap because of the music. Y&R is in some serious trouble because, as you said, cuts will have to happen given these low ratings during the most watched sweeps period of the year. Sally/Kay have not been the miracle that some had hoped for. They seem to be writing as if its 1987. They haven’t evolved to 2017.

      • TruthSquad

I agree with you about the music. It dressed up the whole show and has always been a part of its identity.

      • charlie bracken

iTA with you But given what Young walked into after JFP left He has made some good changes in production.

  • Happy Accidents
  • vivkky

I had off this week and watched a couple of episodes of Days. I am surprised the ratings are this high for Days. The show continues to be big disappointment and reading other fan boards many feel the same. The whole it was not Stefano but Shane in disguise is ridiculous and laughable. Chad and Gabi trapped in a room was done this past summer. Anna’s return is a big fail. What was the point of bringing back Carrie and Austin? Hope is dying in one scene and the next she is escaping officers and bullets. I think Ryan and Dena should never be allowed to write for television drama again. Everyone is quick to blame it all on Dena but I see nothing on the show that can be considered “good” daytime television writing/stories. Thus, both are to blame and seem to be writing for the sake of getting a paycheck without caring or with little effort until the show is cancelled. At this point, I doubt Ron (new writer for june/july!) will help the show out. If NBC renews I think it has very little to do with a new vision/another reboot but more to do with them needing more time to replace that hour.

    • vivien

You mean Ron Carlivati didn’t write that “Shane wearing Stefano’s mask” bit? Because when he starts writing, get set for MORE of that type of thing. He knows how to do romance, but he chooses camp instead.

      • jonboy

Cartoon is the word. He writes cartoon.

  • TruthSquad

After 2 months of the new regime at Y&R I am overall pleased. The ratings remain a chalenge due to IMO years of erratic stories and overall fatigue. I personally believe the lack of excitement is more of a transition of rebuilding the characters so we care about them again and leading toward a slow build. I aughed out loud at a couple of scenes between Lauren, Phyllis, Jack and Gloria. I have not enjoyed Lauren so much in decades. The best transitons are slow and steady. I remain patient and hopeful.

  • Paul

Terrible ratings for Days they are not moving at all i know that little bump over Christmas was only because of the holidays back to reality now. The demos must be close to another new low for both women 18 to 49 and 18 to 34. They need to fire a lot of actors and have a clear out and bring back some real fan faves that fans truly want to see come back. They still may not be able to save it but at least they would had a proper go if they stick with this current cast Days cancellation will will be coming very soon. They need to bring PR, Ali and James and ED plus some more big fan faves back right away and tell the fans to stick with the show just give them what ever they want in salary as they say money talks.

    • There’s a non ironic campaign online to make all the stuff Josh, Dena & Ryan did a dream and fix it from there. They could do a story about Sami finding EJ with Kristen (which TomSell did set up) and go from there. I seriously doubt they will go the dream route, but with all the damage those three did, it’s not a crazy idea.

Token or not, Ryan’s name is on one of the nastiest things Days ever did. Exploiting an old man with dementia for a ratings stunt that helps Hope get away with murder is awful on every level.

      • hosty

I remember watching clips of Passions from The Soup (commentary on pop culture show, mostly ridicule) and so much of DAYS lately reminds me of that soap. Hence, we can see Ryan’s input because he worked for that show. Passions would always leave with “Wow, that was just so dumb” which is the way I feel about Days the past couple of months.

      • BethP

It hurt to see the once-mighty Stefano have fallen so far because of the disease his portrayer was suffering from. It was Shane in some sort of Halloween costume!! All of this makes the Prague trip a cruel, cruel waste of time, but nothing is worse than the fact that an old and dying actor was asked to
come back one last time just so that they could film this horrific
        storyline.

        • Everyone – writers, directors, producers – involved in filming that scene should be fired and blacklisted. It was pure & ugly exploitation. It also shows that the show is as morally bankrupt behind the scenes as Dena, Josh and Ryan’s stories are on the screen.

      • lulu

If you want a dream scenario, cancel all of 2014 too otherwise most of us (the audience) will not care !! We, the fans of Ej and Sami, we want to watch them with good writing otherwise they are better offscreen (and we are better not watching this Days of our lives soap opera), we will pass on insulting and destructive writing and 2014 (their last year..which is make it even more unforgivable) was insulting and destructive !!!

      • JayTN

The “it was all a dream” storyline worked out for “Dallas” (although it cost that series a lot of credibility, which “Days” has never had a lot of), so at this point, “Days” doesn’t really have anything to lose by having E.J. show up in the shower.

    • JayTN

Due to its long, nearly six-month production schedule, if NBC does cancel “Days” there may be little to no time for a proper finale to be crafted. “Days” is probably filming episodes that will air in July and August right now and if canceled, “Days” would air its final episodes in September. Time is definitely not on their side.

  • JONNYSBRO

U people keep saying what Mal.walked into. JFP ratings were sky high with her and Pratts stunts. They were hugely rated some of the highest ratings in 9 years. JFP had a vision for YR. Mal has zero vision at all and Sally writes nothing. Name one storyline happening on YR its all a bunch of boring nothing scenes. Ratings are tanking they werent under JFP. By thr way shes been gone since June 2016.

    • FoxyRoxyy

Great post. And so true. Mal has yet to produce a 5 million average for a whole week whereas JFP and Pratt had dozens of those weeks. There is nothing interesting happening so far under Sally’s reign.

    • padange

I think TPTB now realize how difficult it is to get ratings up or even to have them stable. They started “fixing” things that weren’t broken and totally destroyed storylines during the transition. While I like some of the things the new regime is doing (eg. more humor), their storytelling lacks drama and long-term planning (I mean, they have to start setting things up for future storylines IMO). I also don’t see new fresh interesting romances. Same old, same old (eg. Villy version 1256900).

  • Carmel Smith

YR is so boring. Villy is on everyday talking about nothing. YR used to be entertaining now it’s so dead. The dialogue will put you to sleep.

    • monzo

The worst part right now is everything about Victor. Those scenes with Victoria & Abby this week were too much schmalz, just awful. Abby running Newman is so unbelievable!

  • jesse

JFP/Pratt were fired bc their stunts were making Y&R unwatchable. Some viewers who find everything boring that Sally has done are tuning out but I know one of the over 4 million who keeps tuning in lol.I love Gloria,Lauren,Jill and the new actor that plays Reed.I saw some spoilers coming in the next couple of weeks that will up the drama.

  • JONNYSBRO

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS averaged 5.58 million viewers, up +7% from last year, and its largest audience since the week ending Jan. 31, 2014. Among women demographics, it was up +5% in women 25-54 (2.2/12 from 2.1/12), +15% in women 18-49 (1.5/09 from 1.3/09) and +17% in women 18-34 (0.7/05 from 0.6/05), all best since the week ending Jan. 31, 2014.

This was JFP/Pratt first week ratings that 1.1 million viewers more. Pratt had so much going on.

  • TV&MovieBuff

I’m definitely loving what Sally is doing and still excited to see what she can bring. I think in the end it will boil down to viewer taste. As I have said viewers who loved what Pratt, Latham, etc. were doing weren’t sticking with it and weren’t loyal to it. Just like with GH and other shows they tuned in for the stunts and then Y&R dropped back down to the their loyal 4 mill who were so tired of what the writing was doing to the characters we love.

I can already see in my mind how Sally is repairing the characters, and moving around her pawns and putting them into place for some drama to play out.

I’m so tired of writing that totally ignored characters and was all about plot, plot, plot, plot….all the time. I love plot and story but at the same time if a person murders someone or blows up a mall I want to know why the person did it and how it affected those involved.

    • TruthSquad

Very well stated. I agree 100%. The characters were in dyer need of repair and doing so will help viewers care more when something happens to them.

      • FoxyRoxyy

And do you really think that after Sally spends many boring months, that will make a difference in viewership?

        • TruthSquad

We will see. I like it better now. You obviously do not. Time will tell.

          • FoxyRoxyy

            As The Ratings Drop

  • FoxyRoxyy

Sally Sussman fans: enlighten me. Her first major storyline is bringing back Gloria. Why? She’s irritating and annoying. I cannot stand her. Were fans demanding that Gloria be brought back? Because I missed that memo. No wonder that the ratings for Y&R are low.

    • robert

last time Sally wrote Y&R she made it the Gloria show and ratings fell. it’s mind boggling she’s doing it again

      • FoxyRoxyy

Gloria is irritating. Why she has become the lead character is beyond me. She is a ratings buster.

  • jesse

According to a soap website Morgan isn’t dead and coming back. How can US soaps be taken seriously or attract new viewers when they keep recycling the same old tired s/l.Days and GH are pathetic.I love Gloria bc she is nothing but trouble,my take is if you find the character annoying and don’t like her then Judith C./Sally are doing their jobs.

    • FoxyRoxyy

I doubt that. When I saw last week that Gloria was front and center, I deleted the episodes off my dvr without watching. I doubt that is what TPTB want.

      • jonboy

And I love all the Gloria stuff. To each his own.

        • TV&MovieBuff

I love the character and the actress. I like her in balanced quantities on the show. Hated when she disappeared. But sometimes I wish she were on just a little less. The one I would have loved to have seen in this story is if they could have stolen Susan Hayes as Lauren’s mother again. Wish Sony could have worked out a deal for her to be on both shows. Lauren needs her mother.

          • TruthSquad

Would love to have Joanna back.

  • cab

What a f***** awesome week on Days. Can not believe they are still not attracting viewers. I believe some of this blame goes to NBC by not promoting the show more in it’s primetime schedule. Soap story lines have always been OUT there, remember a gorilla kidnapping a heroine, or a ice princess, or even an alien story line. What about a possession story line that cranked in the ratings. Stories are dragged out because they need to keep things moving along over a year. What one viewer might find ridiculous, others are in it for the entertainment.

    • TV&MovieBuff

Sure there were ridiculous storylines but that wasn’t the whole deal about the storyline. The writers of those story lines didn’t stop with the possession or the ice princess. The story wasn’t about the ice princess at all — it was about Luke & Laura, their love story, their obstacles, their romance, Luke’s redemption, — it was about building the characters. Marlena’s possession wasn’t about that — it was a deeper meaning to the show — a fight between good and evil. A fight between those that loved her for the forces of evil trying to claim her.

The write stories now just as plot points with no impact to the character and no impact on the show later. A few years when All My Children was still on a leading character killed his wife’s brother so that his wife could get his heart. The character had been controversial but some fans were coming around to him, but after he was killed there wasn’t any mention of him at all after a few days — not from his mother or his sisters. The sister who got his heart was never shown being told who’s heart she got. There was no exploration of the shooting or anything. It was just a plot point to get rid of a character and get another character a heart.

Writers today write plot points, and write to appease fan bases and play fan bases off one another and never with any regard to what it does to the character or to the show.

Besides all that todays stunts and stuff are so poorly done too. The shows just don’t have budgets for them anymore. Can you imagine if Days tried to revisit the possession story again. We might see Marlena rise off the bed an inch or two but nothing like you saw before. The money for that type of effects is just not there anymore.

I hear what you are saying, but for me I like the plot driven storylines and suspense. One of the reasons I gave up Y&R was because all anyone ever did was talk, usually scenes were always just between 2 characters talking about nothing. I do not like boring. Hope Ron C. can keep me(probably will) tuning in to Days.
