Topics Discussed
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
  • Carlos

Y&R was ok this week. If I was executive producer the first thing I would do is fire Lilly, NewAbby, Colin, and Dylan(maybe). I would re-hire Billy Miller, Michelle Stafford, Emme Rylan(oldAbby), Drucilla, Lorie Brooks, and Michael Muhney. I would take Hunter and Michael sort out all the problems decently, and offer these actors alot of money. I would re-hire Kay Alden and Josh Griffith to get this show back where it was. But I am going to be Executive Producer of the new online soap opera that me and my wife created. best wishes to Y&R.

    • Bexx

If you were the executive producer CBS would be embroiled in litigation, and young girls would be under the idiotic misconception that they can just “sort out” their problems with the men who abuse them. I swear sometimes I wonder if a ‘human’ is really typing this tripe.

      • JayTN

A lot of those “actions” that our faux-EP would take are things outside the control of Jill Farren Phelps, or any executive producer. JFP has to take into consideration her “overlords” at Sony (which produces the soap) and CBS (which licenses and airs the soap).
This person is probably letting their own personal cast likes and dislikes color their judgment. “Old Abby” (Marcy) Emme Rylan is over at GH in a front burner storyline, so it would be difficult to get her back. “Drucilla” (a.k.a. Victoria Rowell) just lambasted Y&R, so I’m sure Sony/CBS are just busting down the door to get to her.
I’m also sure Sony would really appreciate an EP that played fast and loose with the purse strings, since Carlos seems to think that Y&R has money to burn. JFP was reportedly hired to make the soap cheaper, not more expensive.

        • carlos

Sorry JayTN, it was my opinion and maybe I took it too far. JFP is a really good person, it’s just the dragging of stories. I like Y&R, me and my wife watch everyday when we come home from work just to relax our selves. I live all the way in Trinidad, I wouldn’t want to leave here to go to work for CBS, it was a IF statement. so again i’m sorry, I wont be coming on this site any more because I hate arguing with people and making them upset.

          • sands of time

Please don’t stay away! You are entitled to your own opinions.
            The more posters, the better!!!

          • JayTN

No one is arguing here. You posted your opinion and I posted mine in response. My point was that a lot of the things you said that you would do as EP of Y&R are really outside the scope of what an EP actually does.

On a personal note, every soap is guilty of “dragging” stories. Former “Days” head writer James E. Reilly was the king of dragging out stories. His soap “Passions” was still focusing on the same storylines that were introduced on day one.

      • Carlos

Sorry Bexx, I shouldn’t have posted anything because I don’t like to argue with people and maybe I took this too far. I put my opinion in this statement and didn’t put that in the ending, and the Michael Muhney allegations were rumors. If the Michael Muhney rumors were true and he did what he did then that’s very wrong and i’m against it. I like Y&R, me and my wife watch everyday when we come home from work just to relax our selves. I live all the way in Trinidad, I woudn’t want to leave here to go to work for CBS, it was a IF statement. And I am Human. Thank you very much.

        • Bexx

No need to apologize, you can say what ever you wish.

      • sands of time

It looks like Y&R is really bad if people are wanting a sexual deviant to go back if he truly did those things.

  • Shameka

    Team Days just saying :)

    • Trish Wicks-Watts

What about them. They are the only ones down from last year. Given the reaction from Monday’s bait and switch, this weeks will probably be down too. They better hope May sweeps are good.

      • sands of time

You must be talking about a negative reaction to the dream. If people are upset, it’s because the show was very good and they were fooled. It was so good, they wanted it to be true!

        • Shameka

Days has better story lines than all of the few soaps left..The only storyline I like on YR is Cassie/Victor/Sharon story…

        • Trish Wicks-Watts

That might apply to people that tune in everyday. What they promoted was a reveal and the people that tune expecting that and didnt get it weren’t happy from what I’ve seen. Next time they promote something big, people might not be as inclined to tune in. Let the show speak for itself, don’t try and sell something it’s not. It won’t work well for you. We will see what people thought of their ploy next week.

If I remember correctly, you thought the WilSon adding would be good for them and what I saw said it wouldn’t be. It wasn’t if you remember. This was the same, people were upset and Allison Sweeney who was live tweeting was trying to explain it to the unhappy viewers.

          • vivien

yeah, they’d better not “cry wolf” again, people will get wise .. I was one of the people who hadn’t watched in awhile and got lured back for the “big reveal”. I remember thinking “Wow, if DAYS could keep up the pace like this ALL the time, people would watch more!” DAYS used to specialize in “fantasy” sequences, and we loved them because it would tide us over until our couple finally kissed for real, for instance. But I don’t ever remember a fantasy sequence being promoted by the likes of Michael Fairman, Ali Sweeney, et al, as if it were the real deal! DAYS must be DESPERATE!

  • Kelsey

YR hits record lows in demos. Good going losing Billy Miller

    • TV&MovieBuff

But who knows how much time he wanted off to do other projects. ABC made that mistake with Anthony Geary years ago and now he disappears for months at a time. And it always affects his and other stories. And now they are committed to something that evidently they can’t get out of. Who knows where it would have ended with Billy Miller. Either you want to do a show or not.

  • Trish Wicks-Watts

Everyone was down Thurs and Fri. I know I didn’t watch because of Easter weekend, maybe others did the same. The early part of the week looked good.

  • Patrick Ferrando

ALL the shows are down in every demo except BB/GH who are up slightly in 25-54. But I don’t think YR is hanging its head as it is up the most in TOTAL viewers over a year ago, and the show was ridiculously good this week with the notCassie storyline. And the show is still number one is every demo except 18-34.

    • Kelsey

JFP needs to go period. And her Billy recast is atrocious.

      • Patrick Ferrando

I’m all for JFP leaving, but Tom is the original Billy. So atrocious doesn’t fit here. He originated the character and plays it his way, like he should.

        • Kelsey

I know he’s original Billy. I watched him the first time around and loved him as a teen. He now doesn’t fit the role and isn’t cutting it to me. Or many others.

          • Patrick Ferrando

The only characters I don’t like are Tyler and Dylan. The rest are pulling their weight.
I’m still not on board with the new Kelly, but she is a good actress.

          • MySpoiledRottenGr8DaneGuinness

I’m still not on board with the new Kelly either, but I’m hoping she’ll grow on me…and I agree she is a good actress.

    • Bexx

This past week was great, definitely had those moments where I couldn’t wait for the next episode. I’m looking forward to the blowback when everyone finds out what Victor did. I hope they finally shut him out, and not just for a few weeks.

  • Bexx

My poor Y&R, I hope they have something planned for sweeps.

  • cr5704 .

I just wonders now that Katie is cancelled will gh move to free

    • JayTN

I’m assuming you mean “three” instead of “free”. The answer is no. ABC no longer is responsible for the 3 PM hour, individual affiliates (local stations) are. With “Katie” gone, each affiliate is responsible for finding a replacement, likely one of the upcoming talk shows.

      • sands of time

Maybe Katie took over the free channel and cr5704 had to pay for GH elsewhere.

        • JayTN

Then he should ask for a refund.

  • TV&MovieBuff

Well at least they are not all down in almost everything like last week. And 3 of them are now showing yearly averages up over last year in total viewers. Demos still look pretty bad.

One of the articles someone posted last week on SON and an article I found at Variety mentions that the soaps and shows like The Chew are growing in the hard to get demo 12-25 female demo. It is nice that the soaps are attracting that young audience but if the majority of those are under 18 it will be several years before those viewers transfer over to the 18-45 demo and actually count where the soaps need them to count.

  • sands of time

As a reminder, please help control the talk show population, watch as many soaps possible!

    • MySpoiledRottenGr8DaneGuinness

      Haha…love it!

  • sands of time

Y&R sank to new lows! OUCH!!!

    • JayTN

Yet Y&R still put more distance between itself and the last place soap in total viewers. Y&R saw the biggest year-to-year increase in viewers, while the last place soap was the only one not to see similar increases. Y&R is also tops in every measurement listed above: total viewers, household ratings, women 18-49 viewers/ratings, women 18-34 viewers/ratings and women 25-54 viewers and ratings and the same soap is last in all of those measurements. Now that is worthy of an OUCH!!!

      • sands of time

        Read my post above.

  • sands of time

Yes, DAYS is lower than the same week last year, but last year had huge gains from the year before! DAYS is still higher than that of two years ago.

    • JayTN

Yes, but it is down from the same week in 2011.

Week of April 18, 2011: 2.403 million viewers

And those increases from 2012 is only 21,000 viewers (2.397 vs. 2.376)

      • sands of time

        You’re clawing at the air.

        • JayTN

I’m only doing the same thing you are. “Days” is down from 2013, so you point out that it is up from 2012. I just pointed out that it is down from 2011. You’re the one who is constantly trying to put a positive spin on every single negative concerning “Days”. Given its less then spectacular numbers, that is quite an undertaking.

    • Alex

You’re a real shame for all the other DAYS viewers and fans with your ridiculous and hysteric comments. Not to forget the homophobic attacks you come up with whenever you see an opportunity. Do you honestly think anyone cares about that nonsense and are you really crazy enough to think you are “helping” DAYS in any way???

DAYS has had an overall very good season so far, but there has been a significant drop in the ratings over the last six weeks. And it was deserved in the perception of many viewers because of the total lack of good storytelling and interesting storylines, even around a potential highlight like the WilSon wedding that was completely wasted, since there was no real build up and real story for it. Even more after the recast of Will, there should have been a real and intersting story for Will and Sonny before the wedding. So good, so far. No need for your paranoia and hyperventilation!

      • Alex

I meant HYSTERICAL comments, of course.

      • Trish Wicks-Watts

I completely agree with you on WilSon. Who just drops in an actor and acts like nothing happened. Even if it was a small crisis it would have been better than nothing. With Will finding out about Nick, he could have been angry at Sonny, but before the change Will forgave him. Will needing time to think and Sonny trying to convince the new Will of his love, would have given the audience time to adjust.

Then not promoting it made it even worse. It didnt feel like Days was behind the couple. This was coupled with their other popular couple EJami going through the EJabby. Their two most popular couples turned upside down at the same time. It was a bad move in my opinion.

      • vivien

Stop attacking Sands, he truly loves DAYS and wants it to succeed. Like it or not, there are viewers who are turned off by Wilson PDAs. Sands isn’t one of them! But you can’t deny the Wilson wedding was a flop in the ratings. Lowest-rated day of the week in a low-rated week.

        • GH DAYS fan

Should I quote the ugly homophobic comments you made in several threads? And stop spreading lies: the WilSon wedding day wasn’t the one with the lowest rating that week, and the week in question as a whole was actually better than the all the other weeks since.

          • JayTN

There is nothing factual about your statement. In fact, it is “pants on fire” false.

First, the actual wedding ceremony between Will and Sonny occurred on Thursday. “Days” had a viewership of 2.314 million that day, fewer than any other day of the week. (If you don’t believe me, you can look it up in the ratings archive here)

Second, “the week in question…was actually better than all the other weeks since” is blatantly false. The week in question, March 31-April 4, set a season low in weekly viewership (2.423 million for the week). “Days” also lost viewers in each of the three female demographics from the week before. The numbers fell even further the following week, setting another season low in viewership, but “Days” rebounded in total viewers and two of the three female demographics last week.

          • GH DAYS fan

            So, you just continue lying.

It’s a fact that the big drop of ratings was weeks before the WilSon wedding and that the weeks after the WilSon wedding DAYS drew lower ratings than that week.

So, only homophobes like you can continue blaming the weak ratings we’ve seen from DAYS for six weeks on Will and Sonny.

          • sands of time

Be careful, I told it like it was and was called a homophobe and bigot.

          • JayTN

Generally, when a person cannot stand on facts to make a point, they tend to result to name calling (kind of like the elementary school come back “I know you are, but what am I”) or they try and change the topic (like insinuating anyone who looks at the facts and says that the week of Will & Sonny’s wedding saw the lowest ratings of the season for “Days” is homophobic).

        • sands of time

Thank you vivien. I think a huge DAYS fan like me makes huge Will and Sonny fans feel threatened. I’m OK with all characters and situations on DAYS as long as it works. If it no longer works, I will refuse to be bullied into being quiet. I was only happy for what Will and Sonny were bringing to DAYS and I spoke highly of them, but now there seems to be a backlash and people want to throw names for telling it like it is. If the numbers don’t go up, then DAYS should reavaluate certain positions. My agenda is to have fun and push DAYS to succeed. If people can’t understand that, then they have problems. It’s not about homophobia or bigotry. It’s about survival.

    • Lampshade

To be fair sands, Days being higher than it was two years ago wouldn’t be difficult to achieve. Ratings plummeted into the toilet following that ‘reboot’.

I agree with another poster, don’t try and oversell DOOLs achievements. I am a loyal fan of over 40 years, but I recognise the issues and am realistic. Some problems are serious but not insurmountable, all it takes are better writers.

      • sands of time

I have been very happy with this week’s episodes! It is becoming downright explosive on many fronts!! I hope next weeks numbers reflect that!!!

  • Me

People are sick of Sharon and Nick. The music box is old. Dylan just doesn’t fit. I like Steve B. Y&R isn’t a good fit. The new Billy doesn’t fit with anyone. As far as GH. Ava needs to be caught. They should have let Sabrina and baby be ok. Its a shame for Patrick. The fake Luke s/l suxs. It will probably come out that Johnny is behind it. Jilian doesn’t know. Monica needs a man. Also I The s/l with the kids dating is stupid. They are to young. As far as B&B the Ally and Oliver s/l is a little much. Liam needs to find someone else. Hope confused is getting old. Quinn needs to be pregnant by Bill again. Ridge and Katie don’t go well. I thought that I would like them, Na. Brook needs to stay with Bill. Ridge with be good with Taylor.

    • Patrick Ferrando

It depends which fans you ask about Nick and Sharon. I’ve been reading mostly positive stuff on Twitter and Facebook. But anyway, loving the Cassie stuff. Can’t wait for next week!

  • Andrew Hass

I’m happy that 3 of the soaps went up this week after two straight weeks of all 4 going down.Yeah GH lost viewers but they are up from the same time last year.

  • let the numbers speak

So, overall the trend in comparison to last year continues to be very positive. Only DAYS has seen a series of weaker weeks, but still far away from the lows they had about two years ago, and their season average is still the best in many years.

  • Lampshade

Days was better viewing that week, problems aside. But this needs to continue lurching from one sweeps to another won’t cut it for long term success. I’ve been enjoying BB and YR as well. I’ve happily adapted to the new/old Billy Abbott, although given the choice would prefer Miller only because he was better looking IMO.
Can’t comment on GH, not ready to go back and from what I’ve read still not to my liking.

Update on the Viewers Gain or Loss for Week #16:

I posted the first one of these last week at SON in the ratings thread.
I’ll try to post updates in each thread from now on. I think this shows
why you can’t go by week to week ratings. You have to go by trends. What
a difference a week can make.

2014 Update (16 Weeks Viewer Gains or Losses)

    1) Bold & the Beautiful (-198,000 – 7 weeks up, 9 weeks down)
    2) Young & the Restless (-273,000 – 7 weeks up, 9 weeks down)
    3) General Hospital (-292,000 – 8 weeks up, 8 weeks down)
    4) Days of Our Lives (-352,000 – 7 weeks up, 9 weeks down)

    B&B’s biggest gain was week #12 — a gain of 356,000. Their biggest loss was week #3 — a loss of 447,000.

    Y&R’s biggest gain was week #1 — a gain of 473,000. Their biggest loss week 3 — a loss of 489,000.

GH’s biggest gain was week #13 with a gain of 417,000. Their biggest loss was week #11 with a loss of 372,000 viewers.

Days biggest gain was week #1 — a gain of 273,000. Their biggest loss came week #3 — a loss of 352,000.

    • TV&MovieBuff

Oh and before Mr. Numbers jumps in. These are based on the Live plus 7 numbers that are available to the public. I do not have a secret person that supposedly feeds me numbers that no one else gets. I base these solely on the numbers that are made pubic each week. They are what they are. Anyone can take those same numbers and do the simple arithmetic and come out with the same info.

    • sands of time

      Thank you for the numbers!

  • let the numbers speak

So, over 600,000 total viewers gained by the top 4 soaps in comparison to THE SAME WEEK LAST YEAR!!

And that’s the only comparison that matters and makes sense — over an extended period of time, of course.

Don’t let Mr. Bluff fool you with his “viewers lost in 2014″ game. Not only soaps, but any show, loses viewers when you start counting at the beginning of the year and continue until spring break. That’s a totally absurd way of looking at these numbers, which obviously only serves the purpose to create an image of soaps losing and losing viewers.

The fact of the matter is that all the 4 soaps are having their best season in MANY years so far. And everyone can verify that with the numbers that are available to the public. I’ve explained it over and over again, so even Mr. Bluff should get it by now.

    • KansasGuest

You have to remember that article titles are meant as punctuation marks & have no bearing on actual ratings analysis. It’s not that “they don’t get it.” Titles serve a different purpose – they are simply magnets to get people to read; and bad news usually attracts more hits than happy news. If the title of every weekly ratings report was “More Viewers This Week” it would get boring fast, and people would take it for granted – much like the weather report for San Diego, CA. (“Sunny and in the 70′s again today.”)

  • RobNYC

I like many others have stopped watching Days in part because i am not at all pleased with recast of Will. He is entirely different and as a couple they are no longer believable or interesting.I have not sworn off the show completely but watch less and now find Will and Sonny a “must miss” part of the show. Used to love them.

Also, the full hour format soaps are too slow moving these days and kind of boring. I still like B/B. Zips along and is over before it gets boring and too repetitive.
