(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — Not even two months has gone by since Vanessa Marcil Giovinazzo returned to the set of ABC's "General Hospital," in what is reportedly an expensive contract lasting two years, when word comes out that the soap is about to lose some key cast members thanks to a dent in the pockets. If we are to believe Soap Opera Digest, we can expect several actors to be getting a pink slip in the near future as the magazine is reporting that the soap is facing budget cuts.
In its newest issue, Digest says "rumors are swirling that another round of budget cuts will result in several heads rolling this fall." With news that Leslie Charleson, who has portrayed the role of Monica Quartermaine for over 30 years was out of a contract, it doesn't come as a surprise that more actors could be on their way out as well. When pressed for comment, an ABC representative would only say "we do not comment."
So who do you think "GH" could afford to lose? Just remember that in addition to Vanessa Marcil Giovinazzo, Maurice Benard, Steve Burton, Laura Wright and Kelly Monaco are the stars of the show, so don't expect any of them to lose their jobs.
Side Note: Is it just me or are we hearing that the ABC soaps are facing budget cuts every year right around this time? There's going to come a point where these supposed budget cuts won't be enough to pay for the light bill or the food brought in for lunch, much less a cast members' mortgage. As a reminder, in the spring of 2009, ABC spent $3 million on upgrading the shows production facilities to HD which has not helped the show bring in new viewers nor has the return of Vanessa Marcil Giovinazzo as Brenda Barrett, but I'm not the Executive Producer or President of a network, so what do I know? Except spending money doesn't always make money and "GH" sure does spend a lot with no pay off.
