“Jeanne Cooper was one of a kind. No one who has ever known her would disagree with that statement. Her life force and energy were legendary. Many a time I marveled as she outlasted the rest of us on late night shoots. She was a moving, inventive, and powerful actress. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She was part warrior, part rabble rouser, part truck driver and part Diva, all wrapped up in one Great Lady. Most of all, to me, she was my friend and I loved her. For the last 26 years, hers was the face I most wanted to see when I came to work. Hers was the energy I most wanted to bounce off of on stage. Hers was the voice that kept me in stitches . And because of all that, hers is the presence I will never in my life forget,” said Jess Walton (Jill Abbott, “The Young and the Restless”) in a statement released to Soap Opera Network on the passing of co-star Jeanne Cooper (Katherine Chancellor).
When Jeanne Cooper first stepped into “The Young and the Restless’” Genoa City as Katherine Chancellor back in 1973, soap opera history was made. Written by show creator William J. Bell specifically to convey controversial storylines that would boost weak ratings, Katherine was everything the wealthy wife of Phillip Chancellor II shouldn’t be: a drunk, a heavy smoker and a bit of a slut who had illicit affairs with stable boys. Despite the character’s many problems, fans fell in love with Katherine — as well as the actress who so effortlessly brought her to life.
In her final words on CBS’ “The Young and the Restless” as Katherine Chancellor (aired on Friday, May 3), Jeanne Cooper says to Jess Walton‘s Jill Abbott, “I believe I can manage. Thank you, though,” when Jill asks if Katherine needs help getting up the stairs. Katherine’s final word was “Goodnight” as Jill watched her climb up the steps. Word of Cooper’s final scene came to light courtesy of “Y&R” script editor Brent Boyd on Twitter.

Lily, still puzzled by Cane’s abrupt departure from the apartment, calls him on his cell phone. She wanted to know if he was alright. Meanwhile, Cane shared his disappointment in the police not being able to break his codes. Ronan pointed out that it would be hard to do, but Cane vowed not to give up until he brought his father down. Ronan and Cane continued to talk about digging up Colin’s dirty deeds, but Ronan had to leave. As Cane sat down on a park bench, Lily suddenly arrived, wondering why he was at the park and not at work.
Genevieve and Jack went to Gloworm , where they came across Jill and Colin. Jill told Jack about Genevieve locking Colin in the wine cellar, but before Genevieve could answer him on it, Gloria showed up with a large cake in the image of a safe. Colin assumed that Genevieve was behind it, but she told him someone else must know about his little secrets. Jack didn’t understand what was going and wanted to know about the wine cellar. Genevieve blatantly lied, but Jack focused on what Jill shared. An annoyed Jill blurted out that Colin asked her to go to Australia.
Devon and Neil were at Crimson Lights when a reporter cornered him, wanting to get a scoop on being the son of Tucker McCall. Devon pointedly told the reporter that he had no comment. When the reporter continued to press, Neil stood up and told him to get lost. Devon shared how he wanted the likes of Tucker, Katherine and Harmony to just leave him alone. When Neil questioned on Harmony, Devon told him that it was what Yolanda went by now. Neil couldn’t believe she was back in Genoa City. Meanwhile, Tucker approached Devon’s front door, looking for him. Harmony let him in. He asked where Devon was, but she told him that he was out. Harmony questioned if he knew who she was. He told her he didn’t. She told a stunned Tucker that she was Devon’s mother. She went on to tell about their past together and how after learning she was pregnant, having someone give her money to ‘have it taken care of’.
Neil advised Devon to take things head on, regarding Harmony and Tucker. Devon took his words to heart, but swiftly changed the topic to his joy with his music. The two of them left to head to the hospital. Meanwhile, Tucker wanted to know who gave her money. She told him that his road manager, Ruben, who stated talking to him, gave the money. The two soon started to play the blame game where Devon was concerned. After cooling off a bit, Tucker wanted to know what the two of them should do now.
Cane swiftly told a suspicious Lily that he wasn’t needed at work. They talked about getting together to do something when his cell phone ring.. When he refused to take the call, Lily once again asked Cane what was going on. He told her that the call could wait; he wanted to spend time with her and the twins. She point blank shared that she believed that he was hiding things from her again.
At Gloworm, Ronan showed up, seeing Jill, Colin, Jack and Genevieve together. Gloria quickly went over to tell him what was going on, pointing out that Colin had made plans to leave for Australia with Jill. Back at the table, Colin pointed out that there was nothing wrong with his taking Jill to Australia with him. Genevieve snipped that they should leave and never come back. Jill cut a huge slice of cake for Genevieve and taunted her with it. A frustrated Genevieve demanded a word with Colin. Alone, Genevieve told him that she was the one that held the key to unlocking the codes that the police had. An angry Colin manhandled her, which Jack saw. Ronan saw it too, and after things cooled down, and Jack and Genevieve left, Ronan pointed out that he would be watching Colin.
Tucker told Harmony that he wanted to do whatever he could for his son. Harmony wanted him to leave Devon alone; to let Devon come to him in his own time. Just at that moment, Devon and Neil showed up. Tucker wanted to talk to him but Devon didn’t want to. Neil swiftly escorted Harmony out, giving the two some time to talk. Alone together, he wanted her to explain herself. Neil listed her past deeds after she stated she was there for Devon. Harmony told him that despite her mistakes, she truly cared about Devon and Neil. Back at Devon’s, Tucker tried to apology for his lack of being there. He quickly tried to put the blame of his not knowing about him on Harmony. Devon called him out, asking if he even recognized Harmony. He then asked how come it took Katherine and Paul months to find out who he was, when Tucker couldn’t find him in the 20 some years upon knowing about him.
Colin still wanted an answer from Jill about leaving for Australia. She told him that she wouldn’t go. She pointed out the last time he asked her to go, he wanted to steal the twins. Colin admitted he wanted to go back home for good, but with her.
Genevieve praised Jack for his standing up to Colin to defend her. Jack wanted to know how she ever wound up with Colin. She admitted she was young but now, thanks to Jack, she is a new person again. The two soon started to kiss one another, taking the session over to the couches where they got passionate.
After hearing Tucker’s apology for not being there for him, Devon told him that while he accepted his apology, there was nothing he could do to change things. Tucker wanted a chance, but Devon wanted him gone. Meanwhile, Neil wanted to know the true reason for Harmony being back in Genoa City, besides wanting to be there for Devon. When Harmony left, she bumped into Lily, who was entering. Lily wanted to know why she was there. Neil told Lily that she has a new name and was making a new life. When Lily asked if he believed her, Neil told her no.
Jill had to leave to take care of an emergency at Fenmore’s. When she left, Gloria eyed him, making him aware that she was up to something. Colin wasn’t aware, however, that Ronan set up to wire tap to listen in on all Colin’s conversations. Ronan shared the news with Cane. A call came through and they both listened as Colin stated that Gloria and Genevieve have to be dealt with.
Tucker wanted to continue talking to Devon, but he wanted nothing to do with him. Tucker walked out of Devon’s house, crushed that his son wanted nothing to do with him.
On the Next The Young and the Restless…
(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — “The Young and the Restless” Episode Recap – Thursday, August 18, 2011.
IT HAPPENED TODAY…
Lily was upset that Cane broke his word about staying away from her and the babies. He told her not to blame the nanny, he happened to come upon them but he wasn’t going to turn away from seeing his children; he missed and loved them. Lily stressed to them that their relationship was over with. He understood but it was clear that he missed her. While still in the park, a man approached Cane and served him with divorce papers.
Daniel was still waiting for Lily to return back to Jimmy’s bar. He wondered what was taking her so long. Eden and Kevin were keeping him company when Noah, Hunter and Devon walked in. Eden wasn’t pleased at seeing the pretty blonde near her ex-boyfriend. Noah introduced Hunter to Kevin and Daniel, and they all wished Daniel a happy birthday.
Katherine was with Paul at the house discussing what he’s found out regarding Tucker’s long lost son. He told her based on the forensic analysis, they have a good chance of learning the timeframe of the actual letter. Paul deduced that Tucker’s son had to be around the age of 26. Paul, however, warned Katherine not to get too happy on what he’s found out so far; it was still a long shot in finding her grandson. As they were talking, Paul discussed that the mother of Tucker’s son was someone that may not have been just a one- time fling.
Colin assumed that Jill would be pleased with him that he was proving that he loved her by telling Genevieve that their marriage was over. Jill, however, didn’t buy it. She thought it was all an act to win her over. When he got up to leave, Katherine arrived and chastised Jill for hanging around him. Katherine sat down and Jill told Katherine that she wasn’t at all with him. Meanwhile back at her house, still seething in anger at Colin’s bombshell, Genevieve was nursing her hurt hand, vowing that that Colin wouldn’t be leaving her; it would be the other way around.
Tucker was doing his best to go over business documents when Sofia arrived. She brought over new contracts for him. He was telling her that he was making progress in understanding a bit more clearly. He, however did become frustrated at still needing help. Their conversation took on a personal note when Tucker admitted that Ashley and he weren’t on good terms. Sofia in turn shared that Malcolm and her were no longer together, either. She told him about the baby possibly not being his and admitted to have slept with Neil.
Cane met Colin at Crimson Lights. His father wanted him to go spend some time with Genevieve. Cane didn’t want to do that, but when Colin told him that he was going to divorce her, he immediately jumped on him for doing it just to get closer to Jill. Once again, Colin stressed for Cane to go see his mother, telling him that she’s going to need someone to lean on. Cane agreed and headed over there. When he arrived, Genevieve came down the stairs and figured that Colin was the one that sent him to check up on her. Cane told her he was aware of the divorce. A bitter Genevieve told her son that she didn’t need anything from the likes of her husband. Cane told her that being divorced from Colin was the best thing for him. She shot back if he would feel the same way when Lily ended their marriage. He got upset and was ready to leave when she stopped him. She learned that Lily in fact did serve him with divorce papers. Meanwhile, Colin met with his divorce lawyer, determined to get things moving on ending his marriage.
Lily made her way back to Jimmy’s and privately told Daniel about her run in with Cane. He thought that she would want to have some private time to herself, but she told him that she wanted to celebrate his birthday with him. After they enjoyed birthday cake with their friends, the two of them departed. She took him to a private suite at the Athletic Club. Daniel became flustered, not realizing that Lily was truly ready to move forward with what was going on between the two of them. She soon started to kiss them, and they were ready to have sex with one another. As things started to heat up, Lily suddenly started to think about her times of sex with Cane and instantly pulled back, telling Daniel that she couldn’t go through with it.
Devon asked Hunter if she had her internship yet with Restless Style but she said even when it came through, she would still need a job to cover the cost of living there. Noah found a sure solution by telling her that there was a job opening at Crimson Lights for a barista. When he gushed how they could spend more time together while she was working there, a jealous Eden quickly blocked the girl’s joy by telling her that the job was no longer available. She told a crushed Hunter that she took the job. Kevin skeptically went along with it but pulled his sister to the side and questioned her suddenly wanting the job. She said she changed her mind but Kevin said she only did it because she didn’t want to see Noah getting closer to Hunter.
Paul called Katherine and let her know that he found several pictures of Tucker and a woman together. He wondered if the woman could be the one that is kept her son from him. He told her that he would be looking into who the woman was.
Cane entered Jimmy’s to pick up his check. Devon asked him why he was there if it was his night off. When Cane told him, a skeptical Devon asked if he know that Lily was going to be there. Cane said he didn’t know she would even be there. A nerve was hit when Devon told him that Lily and Daniel left the bar together.
Katherine and Jill were still together at Gloworm when Genevieve showed up. Jill told her that if she was there to talk about Colin divorcing her, it had nothing to do with her. Genevieve coolly shared that before he made his phone call to end his marriage, hours earlier, he was with her, having sex together. Jill didn’t believe her. Genevieve told her whether they got divorced or not, Colin would never be over her.
