Discussion: Ratings: CBS On The Rise; ABC’s Great Fall

Saturday, January 10, 2009 1:30 AM ET | By Errol Lewis

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — ABC’s “All My Children” and NBC’s “Days of our Lives” are the only soaps up year-over-year in total viewers. CBS’ “Guiding Light” continues to erode the most viewers year-over-year (down 412,000 viewers compared to the Week of December 31, 2007). The series did, however, gain 175,000 viewers from the week prior. “General Hospital” and “DAYS” tied for #2 in women 18-49 (1.4 rating), but DAYS had a larger share (8 share vs 7 share for “GH”) and about 47,000 more Women 18-49 viewers.

“The Bold and the Beautiful” had a 1.3 in Women 18-49 for its Friday broadcast, tying “AMC” and “OLTL.” Each soap had a 7 share in the demo. “The Young and the Restless” had a 1.9 rating and 10 share on Friday.

While “GH” is tied for fourth place in Women 18-34 (with “AMC”), it remains daytime’s youngest skewing drama series with a median age of 50.2. “OLTL” came close with its median age of 50.7. “GH’s” Friday broadcast had a median age of 49.8. “B&B” is the oldest skewing daytime drama with a median age of 58.6. ABC is the youngest skewing network with a median age of 50.8.

Discussion/More Ratings Results: Daytime Ratings: Week of December 29 Edition

Monday, December 15, 2008 12:11 AM ET | By Errol Lewis

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — The economy is a bust and we’re in a recession. Advertisers are pulling ad dollars from network television and have instead decided to spend less and fire thousands. With daytime’s audience trending down for more than a decade, 2008 will forever be remembered as the year the daypart finally received its reality check.

So, instead of bringing you a what’s up and what’s down ratings report, we at Soap Opera Network have decided to launch a new feature where we pit soap against soap in the Nielsen Ratings. No, not who is doing better on a week to week basis, but who is the best-of-the-best, only day-by-day.

    Without further adieu…

What remains the strory of the year is how low CBS’ “Guiding Light” can fall as it fights to survive and retain its title as broadcasting’s longest running program. With numbers so low (a 1.4 HH rating on Thursday), it would make “Port Charles” look like a ratings winner. Sadly, “Port Charles” was cancelled in 2003 with higher ratings than this despite airing in the wee-hours of the night. While NBC’s “Days of our Lives” loses 40% of its budget in the upcoming year and a loss of its two stars (Deidre Hall and Drake Hogestyn), three out of its five weekly episodes (Friday, Tuesday, and Monday) outranked every episode of ABC’s “All My Children” and “One Life to Live.” The highest episode was its Friday broadcast with 2.9 million viewers. For the week, “DAYS” averaged 2.7 million viewers. “DAYS” is also the only soap to increase viewers year-over-year, gaining 120,000 viewers from the same point last year. “The Young and the Restless” and “The Bold and the Beautiful” remain daytime’s most watched programs as they hold the 1-5 and 6-10 positions. “Restless,” however has lost the most audience year-over-year with a decline of 630,000 viewers. It’s Women 18-49 ranking, however, remains on par with its year-ago and up a point week-to-week.

After losing the most viewers collectively year-over-year in the early months of ’08, ABC has handed the title off to CBS (207,000 viewers vs 2.1 million  viewers). While the minor loss might not be so bad to one just seeing the numbers, it should  be noted that the network had already lost millions of viewers by mid-2007. More severe losses would have cost a show its cast and crew.

Thursday, August 21, 2008 10:55 PM ET | By Errol Lewis

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — I’ve always thought that if you put on quality television with good writing combined with great acting, you’d find yourself well positioned for growth in the Nielsen Ratings. NBCs “Days of our Lives” proved just that during the week of August 11, 2008, when it moved up to 3rd place in the Nielsen rankings, pulling a 2.4/8 in households. Oh, wait…the Olympics were on. Never mind.

With the Summer 2008 Beijing Olympic games as a lead-in, “Days of our Lives” was able to bring in 500,000 more households than they had the week prior, and 400,000 more than at the same point last year. Similarly, 3.1 million viewers tuned into the soap, which was an increase of 629,000 viewers over last week and 514,000 more than last year. The soap was also able to reclaim the #1 position in the coveted Women 18-34 demographic with a 1.1/7, a position it has not held in sometime. While all soaps were up in Girl viewers aged 12-17, “DAYS” was able to place second behind only “One Life to Live” (70,000 viewers vs 72,000) in the demo, which was an increase of 25,000 viewers from last week.

ABC’s “All My Children” once again hit series lows as it fell to 6th place in households (tie with “As The World Turns”) with a 1.8/6. Only 2.4 million viewers tuned in to see what was happening in Pine Valley, a mere 200,000 viewer advantage over daytime’s lowest rated drama “Guiding Light.” “Light” placed 8th among all soap operas with a 1.6/5 in households and 2.2 million viewers, a massive decline of 400,000 viewers from last year.

Overall “The Young and the Restless” lost the most viewers year-over-year with 5.1 million viewers, a decline of 469,000 from last year. “The Bold and the Beautiful” lost the least amount of viewers year-over-year with 3.5 million viewers, a decline of just 135,000 viewers.

ABC Daytime handed over the title of biggest loser among the big three networks to CBS, as the network lost just 1 million viewers combined year-to-year, while CBS lost 1.3 million.

ABC Daytime Loses Three Million Viewers in One Year

    By Errol Lewis

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — With the Daytime Soap Opera almost extinct due to falling ratings week-after-week, it’s anyone’s guess as to how ABC Daytime, once considered the premiere network for soaps, has lost three million viewers in one year for their dramas with no changes expected in sight.

    ABC Daytime

For the week of February 11, 2008, ABC Daytime’s “General Hospital” held down a 2.3/7 household rating for the third week in a row. The soap averaged 2.9 million viewers, but lost 150,000 total viewers from the week prior (Week of February 4 , 2008). For the comparable week last year (Week of February 12, 2007), “GH” has lost 1.4 million viewers.

CBS’ “The Young and the Restless” continues to be daytime’s number one drama series with a 4.2/14 household rating and 5.8 million viewers, an increase of nearly 300,000 viewers from the week before. “The Bold and the Beautiful” for its part also had an increase of nearly 300,000 viewers to bring its average up to just over 4 million viewers and 2.9/9 household rating. “Guiding Light” was the only other CBS soap to show an increase in the important categories as it averaged a 2.0/6 in households and 2.8 million viewers. The soap beat ABC’s “All My Children” and “One Life to Live” in total viewers. “AMC” averaged a 2.1/7 household rating with 2.7 million viewers, while “OLTL” had a 2.1/7 household rating and 2.6 million viewers.

In Women 18-49, ABC was tied with CBS as Daytime’s #1 network – though CBS had more Women 18-49 viewers (984,000 vs 959,000). “Y&R” held its #1 position in the demo with a 1.9/12.

According to ABC, “All My Children” hit a 29-week high in Women 18-49 (993,000 – since week of 7/23/07), when fan favorites, Angie and Jesse, Debbi Morgan and Darnell Williams, reunited after 20 years.
