(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — You may have heard that Adults 18-49 is the most important sales demographic for primetime and cable television, but how do the daytime soaps along with "The View" and "The Price is Right," despite their ad sales being based on performance in Women 18-49, rate in comparison in Adults 18-49? Not as bad as one might think.

In today's television market, what might be considered a hit and what would be considered a failure has changed significantly. The days when a 2.0 in Adults 18-49 would get you canceled are long behind us. In fact, getting a 2.0 might get you renewed for another season (see "Chuck" and "V" as examples). Going a little further, in the Spring of 2010 the highest rated shows airing on the broadcast networks on a Friday night or even a Saturday night were lucky to rate any higher than a 1.8 in Adults 18-49. Meanwhile, CBS' "The Young and the Restless," which airs in an earlier timeslot with less people available watching television, rates higher than every show on The CW in total viewers, but it also outrates many of that networks shows in Adults 18-49.

During the week of May 31, 2010, "The Young and the Restless" was daytime's most watched program in Adults 18-49 as the soap did a 1.1/8. "Y&R" was flat when compared to its year-ago performance (Week of 06/01/09). ABC's "General Hospital" and CBS' "The Price is Right II" tied for second place in Adults 18-49 with both programs doing a 0.8/6. While "GH" was flat compared to its year-ago performance, the second half of "The Price is Right" was down 11% year-to-year. ABC's "One Life to Live" and "The View," CBS' "The Price is Right I" and NBC's "Days of our Lives" all tied in fourth place with a 0.7 Adults 18-49 rating, but things changed when it came to share. "The View" and "The Price is Right I" had a 6 share, while "One Life to Live" and "Days of our Lives" had a 5 share. "DAYS," "OLTL" and "View" were all down 13% year-to-year, while the first half of "The Price is RIght" was flat. "The Bold and the Beautiful" and "All My Children" tied for 8th place with a 0.6/4 in Adults 18-49, which ironically was a loss of 14% in audience for both soaps compared to the year-ago. "As The World Turns," which typically rates last in many demographics including Women 18-49 was also the least watched daytime program in Adults 18-49 with a 0.5/3 rating. "ATWT" was steady year-to-year and held its audience.

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — While there is heavy emphasis on the all important Women 18-49 demographic, which is how most advertising inventory is sold for the daytime soaps, Soap Opera Network has found that daytime programs including "The View" and both editions of "The Price is Right" are in fact viewed in greater proportions by Women 25-54.

(Editor's Note: Ratings data is based on Live+Same Day for the Week of May 24, 2010. Last weeks report was incorrectly labeled for said week, but was in fact for the Week of May 17, 2010).

During the Week of May 24, 2010, CBS' "The Young and the Restless" not only dominated in Total Viewers, Households, and Women 18-49, the soap also had a strong hold in Women 25-54 with a 2.1/14 rating or 1.3 million Women 25-54 viewers, which was a loss of 9% year-to-year in both categories. ABC's "The View" was next in the number two spot in full daytime with a 1.5/11 or 958,000 Women 25-54. "The View" was down 6% in rating and 4% in viewers. Otherwise, when comparing just the soaps, "General Hospital" and "One Life to Live" tied at #2 with a 1.4/9. "GH" is down 18% year-to-year in Women 25-54, while "OLTL" is down a mere 7%. "GH" had 11,000 more Women 25-54 viewers than "OLTL" (901,000 vs 890,000). Daytime's least watched program is "As The World Turns," which is down 17% year-to-year in rating (1.0/7 vs 1.2/7) and 17% in Women 25-54 viewers (634,000 vs 765,000).

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — When CBS' "As The World Turns" goes off the air in September, "General Hospital" will become the longest running current soap on the air, but did you know that "GH" is also the youngest skewing of all soaps?

According to Nielsen Media Research data for the week of May 17, 2010 (previously noted as week of May 24), "General Hospital's" median age was 50.6, which was nearly 10 points lower when compared to daytime's oldest skewing soap, "The Bold and the Beautiful," whose median age was 58.7. "GH" is flat in year-to-year comparisons, while "B&B" is down nearly two whole points (or 3%), making whatever stories the soap is telling more appealing to younger women. "The Young and the Restless," which has spent over 20 years at the top of the ratings charts, is CBS' youngest skewing program with a median age of 57.8 (down 2% year-to-year).

What follows are each soaps rank, median age, and percent change year-to-year:

Rank Soap Median Age Percent Change (%)
        1 General Hospital 50.6 N/C
