(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — With a recent spike in the teen birth rate across the United States, The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy is sponsoring a forum in the nation’s capitol to discuss ways to reverse the trend.  Among those featured to speak at the forum are Seventeen Magazine Editor-in-Chief Ann Shoket, talk show host Maury Povich, and “One Life to Live’s” Kristen Alderson (Starr Manning).

Llanview teen Starr Manning is no different than a lot of other teenage girls across the United States. Pregnant at the age of 16, and in no way prepared to become a mother.  Last year, after having unprotected sex with her boyfriend Cole Thornhart, Starr learned she was pregnant.  After considering abortion, she ultimately chose to keep the baby, allowing an older friend (Marcie McBain) to adopt it once born. Sadly however, the baby supposedly died at birth.  In the last two years, an increasing number of young ladies in this country are finding that their situations errily mirror that of the fictional soap character.  After 14 years on the decline, the nation’s teen birth rate soared 5% between 2005 and 2007.

In an effort to alert teens of the issues surrounding teen pregnancy, Alderson will team up with Maury Povich and a host of state and local leaders from around the country, experts in digital media, and representatives from the entertainment industry to host a forum in the First Amendment Lounge of the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. (529 14th Street NW) on Tuesday, May 5th from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm et.

Major items on the agenda include theories as to why the teen birth rate is rising and how the trend may be reversed, innovative and creative ways to talk to teen about pregnancy on the state and local level, how best digital media can be used to educate teens, and what popluar media can and should do to help combat teen pregnancy.

The forum takes place on the eve of the 8th annual commeration of the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy credits the media with highlighting the issue of teen pregnancy, such as “ABC daytime’s ‘One Life to Live’ and ABC Family’s ‘Secret Life of the American Teenager,’ which have both developed compelling story lines about teen pregnancy as well as extensive, thought-provoking online content.”  In addition, Povich plans to focus on prevtending teen pregnancy on his website, as well as upcoming episodes of his nationally syndicated talk show.

“Given the recent increase in the teen birth rate, a renewed focus on preventing teen pregnancy is urgently needed,” said Sarah Brown, CEO of The National Campaign. “We hope our forum will help policymakers, practitioners, and parents realize that complacency is not an option just as we hope the National Day Quiz will help teens think carefully about sex and contraception, the possibility of pregnancy, and the lifelong challenges of being a parent.”

SoapOperaNetwork.com) — John-Paul Lavoisier and Farah Fath, “One Life to Live’s” super couple Rex Balsom and Gigi Morasco, play host to this year’s Gabriel Project charity fundraiser.

Since 1990, the Gabriel Project has helped provide life-saving heart surgery to children around the world who are in need.  The non-project organization was founded by Mark J. Melamed, a six-grade teacher who persuaded his students to become involved after the class researched the number of children who die everyday in developing countries, and identified the east African nation of Tanzania as one of the five poorest countries; so poor in fact, that no one living there has access to heart surgery.  As a result, the students chose to sponsor a child from Tanzania, eight-year-old Gabriel Inyunye, from which the group takes its name. Unfortunately, the child died of intractable heart failure before necessary funds could be secured to fly him to the United States for needed surgery to repair the damage to his heart.

This year’s fundraiser was originally scheduled for May 2nd, but has been moved to Saturday, May 16th due to a scheduling conflict.  The event begins at 6:00 pm et with a pasta dinner followed by a celebrity auction.  An autograph and photo session with Lavoisier and Fath is also scheduled.  The venue is Veteran’s Memorial School, located at 424 South Main Road, in Vineland, New Jersey.  Tickets are $10 per person, and reservations can be made by calling (856)-794-6918.

More than 300 items will be auctioned off, including several several personally autographed pieces from celebrites.  Those items include guitars signed by Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20, Roger Water of Pink Floyd, and Kenny Chesney; photos of Paul Newman, Johnny Cash, and the Jonas Brothers, a collectable “Jetsons” cereal box signed by the voice of Jane Jetson, Ms. Penny Singleton; and the “One Life to Live” trophy from “Family Feud” signed by Robert S. Woods (Bo Buchanan).

For those unable to attend the fundraiser, but who would still like to bid on any of the items, click here to e-mail the event organizer.  There will be Chinese, Live, Silent auctions all happening at the event.

SoapOperaNetwork.com) — Although he now calls Llanview home, Jerry verDorn hopes “One Life to Live” will allow him to reprise his former “Guiding Light” role one last time before the soap ends its 72-year run on September 18th.

From 1979 until 2005, verDorn portrayed the popular attorney Ross Marler on “Guiding Light,” before the soap dropped him to recurring status following a series of budget cuts.  Less than two weeks after he last aired on “GL,” verDorn made his “OLTL” debut as Clint Buchanan (a role originated by the late Clint Ritchie) on October 25, 2005 and never looked back.

But with “Guiding Light” set to air its final episode this fall after being canceled last month by CBS, verDorn appears to be getting a little homesick for his old stomping ground.  According to TVGuide Canada, the actor is said to be confessing to friends and “OLTL” co-stars that he wouldn’t hesitate to return to Springfield for “GL’s” final episode.  However, it remains to be seen if his bosses at ABC and “OLTL,” where he remains on contract, would permit him to drop by the competition, even if it is their last episode.

A spokesperson for “OLTL” had no comment. SON will continue to follow this story as it develops.

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) –”Ugly Betty” star Tony Plana informs Entertainment Weekly that his wife has landed a role on “One Life to Live.”

EW recently caught up with Plana and his “Ugly Betty” co-stars for a panel discussion at New York City’s Paley Center for media, in celebration of ABC’s announcement that it was picking up the primetime telenovela for a fourth season.

When Plana, who portays Betty’s (American Ferrera) father Ignacio Suarez, was asked about he personally celebrated the early renewal, he commented that he took his family out to dinner and treated them to “some really expensive wine.”  After stating that he missed the recently canceled primetime dramas “Pushing Daisies” and “Eli Stone,” Plana let it slip that his wife (Ada Maris) just got a job on “One Life to Live” and that “I’m a loyal guy,” when it was noted that all the shows aired on the Alphabet Network.

Maris is perhaps best known for the role of Gina Cuevas on the NBC comedy “Nurses” from 1991-94.  The show centered around a hospital in Miami, and was a spin-off “Empty Nest” which, in turn, was a spin-off of “The Golden Girls.”  Following the show’s cancellation, Maris appeared in an episode of “The Cosby Show” as the wife of a community-center director played by musician Tony Orlando.  It was hoped that the episode would serve as the pilot for a new sitcom entitled “Maris and Orlando,” however those plans never materialized.  From 2004-05, Maris portrayed Captian Erika Hernandez on “Star Trek: Enterprise,” and Sonia on “The Brothers Garcia” from 2000-2003.

The actress has also made numerous guest appearances on such shows as “The District,” “Home Improvement,” “Walker, Texas Ranger,” “Nash Bridges, “Hill Street Blues,” “Knight Rider,” and “Hunter.”  Film credits include “About Last Night…,” “Miracle on Interstate 880,” “My Little Assassian,” “The Egg Plant Lady,” and “Change Your Life!.”

A spokesperson for “OLTL” would not comment on the news, nor on the undisclosed role Maris will play on the sudser. SON will continue to follow this story as it develops.

Tilford to Play Doctor in Llanview

Saturday, May 2, 2009 9:09 PM ET | Scotty Gore

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — Llanview gets a new health care professional as Terrell Tilford joins the cast of “One Life to Live” in the contract role of Dr. Greg Evans.

With Michael McBain set to leave town next month with wife Marcie by side and Larry Wolek missing in action in recent years, Llanview Hospital is facing a serious doctor shortage.  But the residents of the fictional Pennsylvania surburb needn’t worry.  On June 23rd, a new doctor will ride into to town just in time to save the day.

While “OLTL” is keeping quiet on details of the new doc, it is speculated that he may be the miracle worker brother recently referred to by Shaun and Destiny that may help young Matthew Buchanan regain the use of his legs and walk again.  It also appears that Dr. Evans could prove to be Rachel Gannon’s (Daphnée Duplaix Samuel) supposed boyfriend from Chicago, since both actors are roughly the same age.

Tilford was offered the role that Réal Andrews (ex-Marcus Taggert, “General Hospital”) is reported to have recently auditioned for.  The 39-year-old Tilford portrayed David Grant on “Guiding Light” from 1998-2001 and Dr. Bob Carrington on “Days of Our Lives” in 2008.  In addition, the actor has a long list of small screen credits including appearances on “Coach,” “My Wife and Kids,” “Shark,” “CSI: NY,” “Bones,” “24,” “Star Trek: Enterprise,” and “Cosby.” And Tilford will portray Detective Williams in the soon to be released feature film “Dark House.”

Lucas doubts Rafe is going to be that excited to start anything romantic with Sami as long as she’s still harboring feelings for EJ. Sami argues she isn’t harboring feelings.
