(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — Despite earlier reports that she was ‘thisclose’ to signing a new deal with “One Life to Live” to reprise her signature role of Kelly Cramer, it now appears that Gina Tognoni won’t be returning to Llanview after all.

With the demise of “Guiding Light’ all but certain come September, speculation recently began to surface that the actress, who has portrayed Dinah Marler since 2004, might be interested in returning to her old stomping ground of Llanview.  As the rumors persisted, numerous media outlets reported that Tognoni and ABC were in negotiations.  It appeared as if a deal was nearly finalized.

All that changed late last week when TVGuide Canada’s The Suds Report broke the news that the two sides had failed to reach an agreement.  Apparently the sticking point appeared to be Tognoni’s salary, should she agree to return to “OLTL” in the role she originated in 1995.  A set-side source revealed to The Suds Report that “She asked for too much money, so ABC passed.”

Information surfaced recently that Tognoni apparently turned down offers from two west coast soaps (“The Young and the Restless” and “The Bold and the Beautiful”) in order to remain in New York City with her new husband.  The Daytime Emmy winner is also reported to have turned down the role of Carly on “General Hospital” (which was originated by Sarah Brown).  That’s leaves “All My Children” and “As the World Turns” as the only potentially viable offers for Tognoni in terms of daytime soaps.  And given that she turned down “GH” and demanded too much money from “OLTL,” it would seem unlikely that ABC would be very eager to offer her a job on “AMC.”  And, as far as “ATWT” goes, its future appears rocky at best.   But, after all, this is daytime television, and stranger things have happened.

SON will continue to follow this story, and bring you more details as they become available.

“One Life to Live” airs weekdays on ABC. Weeknights on SOAPnet. Check local listings.

Discussion: Gina Tognoni Finds She Has No New ‘Life to Live’

Monday, June 15, 2009 3:00 AM ET | By Scotty Gore

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — “One Life to Live” reminds viewers that yes, there are gay people in Llanview.

In 1992, “OLTL” broke new ground in daytime with the introduction of teen Billy Douglas (Ryan Phillippe), who was later revealed to be gay, and homophobia soon reared its ugly head in Llanview.  In 2005, Nora Hanen learned that her husband, District Attorney Daniel Colson, was leading a double life. Proving appearances can be deceiving, the mild mannered Colson seemed to be a devoted husband and father, when in reality he was involved in a homosexual affair with a trouble young man, and would stop at nothing, even murder, in order to protect his secret.

Now comes word that the ABC sudser is penning a new gay storyline, involving two characters already established on the soap’s canvas.  According to sources, fans will soon learn that Officer Oliver Fish (Scott Evans), one of Llanview’s finest men in blue, engaged in a relationship of a sexual nature with hospital lab tech Kyle Lewis (Brett Claywell) back when the two were college frat buddies at LU.  The romance may soon be rekindled, but not before a third man (as revealed in a recently released audition script for the role of ‘Griffin’) comes between them.  However that role is still in the casting process.

“One Life to Live” is not alone is featuring homosexual storylines as of late, both “As the World Turns” and “The Young and the Restless” have demonstrated that they are keeping up with reality by showcasing gay plots and characters.  And in February, “All My Children” treated viewers to daytime’s first wedding between two women.

Making the upcoming “OLTL” storyline more interesting is the fact that one half of the couple, Scott Evans (Oliver Fish) is openly gay.  Makes one wonder how the soap will explain his character’s romantic interest in new roommate Layla Williamson (Tika Sumpter), and why he was so smitten with Stacy Morasco (Crystal Hunt) following their torrid one night stand.  Just as long as Officer Fish doesn’t go around murdering the citizens of Llanview to hide his alternate lifestyle, the plot sounds promising.

“One Life to Live” airs weekdays on ABC. Weeknights on SOAPnet. Check local listings.

John P. Iblis/JPI

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — While many fans are sure to be mourning the loss of Chad Michael Murray (ex-Lucas Scott) and Hilarie Burton (ex-Peyton Sawyer Scott), “One Tree Hill” is not about to let them go without a fight.

Best known for his roles on MyNetworkTV’s “Fashion House” and NBC’s “Lipstick Jungle,” Robert Buckley has signed on as a series regular beginning this fall when “Tree Hill” returns for its seventh season on the The CW.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Buckley will be portraying the role of Clayton – “a brash young sports agent who represents Nathan Scott (James Lafferty) and has become a close friend, ally, business partner and advisor to him while also enjoying the spoils that come from being a wealthy, handsome single guy.” Originally, the role of Clayton was meant for Brian Austin Green (ex-David Silver, “Beverly Hills, 90210″), but a deal could not be hashed out with the actor.

It is being reported that the show will once again jump ahead into the future to advance storylines, this time by one year. In addition to his work on “House” and “Jungle,” Buckley has also made guest appearances on “Ghost Whisper” and on the CW’s “Privileged.” In 2008, he starred in “Flirting with Forty” along-side soap vixen Heather Locklear (“Melrose Place” and “Dynasty”).

“One Tree Hill” airs Mondays at 9:00 ET/PT on The CW. Check local listings.

‘DAYS’ Snags a Major Return

Saturday, June 13, 2009 7:06 PM ET | By Angela Rosa

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — Crystal Chappell returns to “Days of Our Lives.”

On Thursday, June 11, TV Guide Magazine broke the news that Daytime Emmy Award winner Crystal Chappell has inked a deal to return to the daytime drama that put her on the map, NBC’s “Days of Our Lives.”

On “DAYS,” Chappell played popular heroine Dr. Carly Manning from June 1990 to October 1993. Carly enjoyed a major romance with former-widower Bo Brady (played by both Peter Reckell and Robert Kelker-Kelly), a not so happy marriage to Bo’s father Victor Kiriakis (John Aniston) and an unusual relationship with Lawrence Alamain (played by real life husband Michael Sabatino), the father of her son Nicholas Alamain. In 1993, former “DAYS” Head Writer James E. Reilly penned a storyline that found Chappell’s character buried alive by Lawrence’s disapproving and not quite sane aunt, Vivian Alamain (Louise Sorel). The storyline was so popular and daring that “DAYS” ratings rose from a 4.6 to a phenomenol 6.4 in the matter of just several weeks. In a shocking move, just months after that story came into play, the NBC soap decided they no longer needed the actress and she was shown the door. Probably the most visually stunning actress on daytime television at the time, Chappell earned a 1993 Soap Opera Digest Award for Hottest Female Actress.

Chappell has enjoyed roles on ABC’s” All My Children,” “One Life to Live” and NBC’s “Santa Barbara,” but it was “DAYS” that made her a daytime superstar and CBS’ “Guiding Light” that gave the one-time underrated actress respect for her contribution to the craft of acting.

On “Guiding Light” Chappell has played anti-heroine Olivia Spencer Lewis since July 1999. The character has gone through a lot of the shows top men, but it’s the loss of her current romance with Natalia Rivera Aitoro (Jessica Leccia) that will break the hearts of a lot of “GL” fans. For her part, in her TV Guide Magazine interview with Michael Logan, Chappell reports that she was completely open to moving over to “GL’s” sister-soap “As the World Turns” to carry on the love-story but nobody who could have gotten it done showed any interest in getting it done.

The actress has earned four Emmy nominations for her work on “Guiding Light” – two for Lead Actress and two for Supporting Actress, Chappell took home the Supporting Actress trophy in 2002.

The 43-year old actress will bring Dr. Carly Manning back to Salem in October, one month after the current daytime drama she’s on, “GL,” goes off the air.

“Days of our Lives” airs Weekdays on NBC. Weeknights on SOAPnet. “Guiding Light” aires Weeksdays on CBS.Check local listings.
