(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — ABC Soaps in Depth is reporting that actress Leslie Charleson, 65, who portrays the role of Monica Quartermaine on ABC's "General Hospital," has been taken off contract and has been placed on recurring status, but I'm more surprised to hear that she was even on contract to begin with considering fans haven't seen Monica on an even semi-regular basis, based on what a contract guarantees an actor. Of course, "GH" did provide the actress with a new contract in 2009, which just came up for renewal and as we can see, the show opted not to do so.

Charleson joined the cast of"GH" in 1977 replacing actress Patsy Rahn, who originated the role. She has been nominated for four Daytime Emmy Awards  and four Soap Opera Digest Awards, but has never won. She has appeared in such primetime shows as "Dharma & Greg" and "Diagnosis Murder." She also brought her character, Monica Quartermaine, over to "GH" spin-off's "Port Charles" and "General Hospital: Night Shift" for multiple appearances.

A typical soap contract guarantees a star financial payment of three episodes or days per week irregardless of whether the show fulfills said guarantee. In Charleson's case, the show was paying her, but refused to use her.

"General Hospital" airs Weekdays on ABC. Anytime on ABC.com.

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — On Monday, August 23, online websites and social networks were going crazy over news that ABC's "One Life to Live" has called in all of its contract cast members to be at the studio on Thursday, August 26 for what was presumed to be a big meeting to discuss whether or not the show would be A) Moving to the West Coast, B) Getting its budget slashed, again or C) Getting canceled. Fortunately, neither is happening.

Setside sources have confirmed to Soap Opera Network that the big meeting taking place at the "One Life to Live" studio is nothing more than updates on what are essentially just house rules and scheduling actor vacations during the holiday season. In fact, these types of meetings happen 3 to 4 times a year for the show as Executive Producer, Frank Valentini, likes to have group discussions with his cast members. Is that so bad? Of course, in the last meeting that took place sometime back, the cast learned that their scripts would be printed as two-sided copies instead of the norm of one-side. The horror!

While we all are concerned that "One Life to Live" might be the next soap opera to go after the recent cancellations of "As The World Turns" and "Guiding Light," let's all just try to enjoy the show we've been enjoying for the last 42-years instead of speculating on when it will end. In fact, if you are enjoying the show (even if you're not), write into the show and let them know. A letter showing your interest, good or bad, is worth more than you think.

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — In the new issue of ABC Soaps in Depth, dated September 6, 2010, actress Vanessa Marcil Giovinazzo has set the record straight on the marriage reports that rocked Hollywood blog sites in early July.

On Wednesday, July 14, Soap Opera Network had reported that Vanessa Marcil had wed longtime love Carmine Giovinazzo ("CSI: NY") in an intimate ceremony attended by close family and friends. The report was based on details provided by US Magazine, which claimed that the mag had heard from a representative of the actress that "They [Marcil and Giovinazzo] were married in New York on Sunday night with family and close friends." With news that the actress had professionally changed her name from Vanessa Marcil to Vanessa Marcil Giovinazzo, it only solidified news of the nuptials. Now a month later, the actress has finally spoken out on what has apparently turned out to be nothing more than a blown out of proportion party that was being held in preparation of her upcoming nuptials to Mr. Giovinazzo, which is set to take place this winter.

Just before taping began for her return to "General Hospital" in late July, the actress informed her employers at Disney/ABC Television that she had recently changed her name, which was done in order to give the company enough notice to update promotional materials in conjuction with her return to "GH." But why did she change her name at all if she isn't married? And why did it take so long to clear up all those reports?

In her In Depth interview, Marcil Giovinazzo revealed that she changed her name prior to the actual event because "I wanted to use his name professionally" She added, "We have been in love for 11 years. We've always been in each other's lives." As for why it took more than a month to clear things up? "I'm completely unaware, as all my friends and family always like to remind me," she said. "We grew vegetables and we are so living under our own little rock! We don't even have a TV!" Well that explains a lot!

Now how about when we can report on the REAL wedding? "We're going to have about 10 parties celebrating! But the details of the wedding are just going to be ours."

Vanessa Marcil Giovinazzo can bee seen on "General Hospital," which airs Weekdays on ABC. Anytime on ABC.com.

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — Soaps in Depth recently revealed that "General Hospital" is currently actively casting the role of a supposed "supervillian" that will rock the canvas this November. The unnamed character is described as a forty to sixty year old, "ruthless, intense and unmistakable presence," who will be heavily recurring for approximately six months starting in Mid-November. Soap Opera Network has since learned that the storyline kicks off next week with the introduction of a new crime lord who is after Brenda Barrett (Vanessa Marcil Giovinazzo).

Sources are confirming that just before Brenda finally comes face-to-face with Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) for the first time in seven years on the Friday, September 3 episode of "General Hospital," Brenda receives a warning that she is being actively pursued by a notorious crime lord who is known simply by the name "The Balkan." While we won't be seeing the characters face for sometime, the mystery man will be providing the soap with much needed drama, action and adventure.

Can Sonny, Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) and Jasper 'Jax' Jacks (Ingo Rademacher) protect Brenda from danger, or will the "The Balkan" get her first? Tune in to ABC's "General Hospital" to find out.

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — If being all over the soap press and "The View" in preparation of her return to ABC's "General Hospital" earlier this month wasn't enough, actress Vanessa Marcil Giovinazzo, who portrays Brenda Barrett, is set to make an appearance on the syndicated talk show "The Doctors" for the programs third season premiere.

According to Marcil Giovinazzo's official website, the actress will appear as a guest co-host in a "mom-tourage" themed panel of the the daily talk show's Monday, September 13, season premiere. "The segment will feature rotating moms, experts, and celebrities discussing kid’s and women’s issues in a light-hearted way," the site said. "Dr. Lisa Masterson will moderate the discussions ranging from diapers, teething, and other issues facing mothers."

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — In August 2009, contract cast members of ABC's "All My Children" were required to attend a mandatory meeting which resulted in the news that the soap was being moved to the West Coast in hopes of saving money on the drama series' budget. Now comes word that a similar meeting has been called for contract cast members for sister soap "One Life to Live." Could Llanview be heading out west as well or is this the end for your favorite characters?

TV Guide Canada's Nelson Branco is reporting in his latest The Soapgeist column that stars of the soap are required to attend an onset meeting scheduled for Thursday, August 26.

Fans on our SON Community Message Boards are speculating that there are three scenarios that this meeting could have been called for:

            1. OLTL Canceled?
            2. OLTL moving out West?
            3. Craft Servies Eliminated as a pre-emptive strike.

While the third is the funniest, it would be a better option than option #1.

Soap Opera Network will have news of the outcome of said meeting once news breaks.

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) – Labor Day has been called the unofficial start of fall and the last major summer holiday — a day set aside to honor working men and women across the United States.  It’s also a chance for ABC Daytime to take the opportunity to catch viewers up on some of the key moments from the recent past that helped define current storylines.

On Monday, September 6th, instead of showing first-run episodes of your favorite ABC Daytime dramas like “All My Children,” “One Life to Live,” and “General Hospital,” the network has opted to air repeat episodes of the soaps, which originally aired earlier this summer.

So if you want to relive the residents of Pine Valley searching for Erica, Llanview’s Jessica and Natalie each learning they are pregnant, and Port Charles being tormented by James Franco, then this Labor Day ABC has you covered. In case you missed these episodes the first time around, here is preview of what to expect:

              • “All My Children” Episode #10392 (original air date 6/10/10) — Liza tells Damon what Tad did to her all those years ago (slept with her mom) and doesn’t want him hurting Colby the same way. Tad admits to Colby that he wants the same happiness as Jake and says he has feelings for Liza. Sexual tension is high between Tad and Liza and they kiss. They agree to give things a shot. Greenlee tells Ryan that she knows where Erica is but won’t give any further details. Krystal and Jackson head to West Virginia to find Erica. Angie recovers from collapsing and reassures Jesse that she’ll be fine.

              • “One Life to Live” Episode #10731 (original air date 07/21/10) — After finding out they are pregnant, Natalie doesn’t know if John or Brody is the father and Jessica doesn’t know if Ford or Brody is the father. They see each other on the way out of the ER and both say the doctors told them it was nothing. Natalie tells Gigi and Jessica tells Kelly about their situation. Rex and Kelly decide to investigate the Bennett Thompsons lead in Boston. Gigi is accepted to LU. Todd and Téa tell Dani they’re getting married and she congratulates them. Todd and Téa make love and she tells him she’s glad he is there for her. Dani talks to Greg about a possible cure for cancer she found on the Internet. Viki and Charlie agree their plan to put Dorian and David back together backfired. They decide to avoid them by taking a vacation and head off to the Caribbean.

              • “General Hospital” Episode #12106 (original air date 07/23/10) — Jason gets a message from Franco and the situation comes to a head. Lucky, Nik and Liz realize who has taken the baby. Warren’s rampage at General Hospital leaves people injured. While Jax charms the Contessa Fernanda de la Barca, who has control of Alcazar’s millions, Skye gets access to the Contessa’s office and steals back Alcazar’s fortune.

Original episodes of your favorite ABC soaps return Tuesday, September 7th.
