(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — “Days of our Lives” producer fired after battle with head writer escalates. “One Life to Live” veteran takes over.

According to published reports, “Days of our Lives” executive producer Ed Scott has received the boot from the NBC Daytime drama series after his reported battle with the soaps Head Writer, Dena Higley, escalated to new heights. Former “One Life to Live” executive producer and sometime writer Gary Tomlin will take over EP duties at “DAYS” effective immediately.

Prior to his work on “DAYS,” Scott served as Executive Producer at CBS’ “The Young and the Restless,” where he worked from 1984-2001. He returned to the soap in 2004 as its Supervising Producer until his departure in June 2007, just before joining “Days of our Lives” in August 2007 as co-Executive Producer alongside show owner Ken Corday.

As Executive Producer of “One Life to Live,” Gary Tomlin is credited with providing the ABC soap with its only Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series in the shows forty-year history. He served in this capacity from January 2001 through August 2003. He was succeeded by current “OLTL” EP Frank Valentini. During the recent Writer’s Guild of America writer’s strike, Tomlin served as “One Life’s” Head Writer.

(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — Genie Francis returns to Port Charles earlier than expected.

Soap Opera Network has learned that actress Genie Francis will return to the role of Laura Spencer on ABC Daytime’s “General Hospital” beginning Monday, August 25. Previously it was reported the actress would return on Tuesday, August 26 (see story).

Laura’s return coincides with daughter Lulu’s (Julie Berman) path to destruction after accidentally killing Logan Hayes (Josh Duhon) in early July. Lulu has been having hallucinations of Logan, which is leading her to a near breakdown.

“GH” began using a body double for Laura on Tuesday, August 5, but when Francis marks her return on the 25th, look for many shocking twists and turns that not even poor Lulu can believe.

              Dear Readers,

When we came up with the Bringing.Drama.Closer campaign on Soap Opera Network many years ago, we never thought that 2008 would bring some of the biggest controversies in the daytime world, nor did we think it would be happening off screen and behind-the-scenes.

So far we have had the “Days of our Lives” online scandal a few weeks back as reported by TV Guide Canada’s Nelson Branco and now we have reports that Carolyn Hinsey of Soap Opera Weekly and Soap Opera Digest fame has been fired by both magazines’ owner Source Interlink, Inc. due to supposed “budget cuts.” Jossip, the website that broke the news, has found a record number of responses to its article with over 1,000 replies and has subsequently published a few of the well thought out discussions in a second article posted a day later. Even our very own message board has discussed this topic through tooth and nail, albeit with much of the discussion centered on the scandals being “outed” at the Jossip site. The ruckus reminds me of the days of a website known as the DataLounge, where such topics as whose dating who, who slept with whom, who rose to the top with their legs in a twist and much more tenacious acts were the talk of the town with thousands of replies in near daily threads. The outlandish discussion, however, forced the website itself to shut down such threads and discussions due to the enormity that some posters would stoop to in order to make their “news” something to remember.

Hinsey’s firing will possibly go down as one of the biggest soap stories in recent memory, not because of the drama it seems to be causing, but because a woman who has been in this industry for decades and has had a stronghold on the daytime community as a whole, has been taken out by a publisher who holds the key to two important assets this industry has left – Soap Opera Digest and Soap Opera Weekly. These two magazines are the longest running soap centered publications still in existence that cover the entire daytime industry. If it weren’t for these magazines, Soap Opera Network itself wouldn’t be where it is today. My hope is that this isn’t signaling the beginning of the end for either magazine despite their falling readership.
