Actor James Rebhorn, perhaps best known to soap fans as the abusive stepfather of Beth Raines on “Guiding Light,” passed away in his home this past Friday afternoon at the age of 65.

Rebhorn was a celebrated character actor who appeared in over 100 television, film, and theater roles. In addition to being featured on “GL” in the eighties, he also made appearances on soaps “The Doctors,” “Search for Tomorrow,” and “As The World Turns.”

Outside of the soap world, Rebhorn gave memorable supporting performances in a wide variety of films: from big blockbuster movies (“Independence Day”; “Real Steel”) to dramas (“Scent of a Woman”; “Far From Heaven”) to even comedies (“Meet the Parents”; “My Cousin Vinny”). His television roles include the role of the prosecutor on the series finale of “Seinfeld.” His most recent, and one of the most notable roles however, was that of Carrie Mathison’s bipolar father on Showtime series “Homeland.”

Rebhorn is survived by wife Rebecca Linn and their two children.
