(SoapOperaNetwork.com) — As first reported on Soap Opera Network‘s Twitter page on Monday afternoon, ABC’s “General Hospital” will debut its all-new opening sequence on Tuesday, February 23, the same day the soap celebrates its 12,000th episode.

Initially, ABC insiders were unclear as to when the new opening would debut and could only tell us that it would be “soon,” however, we have since learned that with the upcoming celebration, production on the opening was fast-tracked in order to meet the special deadline.

Look for the show to finally remove old (and mostly dead) characters from the opening sequence including the appearances of Justus Ward (M’fundo Morrison), Alan Quartermaine (Stuart Damon), Ned Ashton (Wallace Kurth), Dillon Quartermaine (Scott Clifton), Lorenzo Alcazar (Ted King) and actor Greg Vaughan, who portrayed the role of Lucky Spencer until his dismissal upon the return of originator Jonathan Jackson in October 2009, in the universally panned all-male final shot.

It is unclear at this time if the soap will debut a new theme song when the opening debuts or if it will keep its current theme, which is a variation of the classic 1990’s “Faces of the Heart” theme by musician Dave Koz.

“General Hospital” airs Weekdays on ABC. Weeknights on SOAPnet.
